@joebol & john_sho,  I dont think that is a business I can effectively manage. If not in good hands I will bite my finger at the end of the day.
In case my posting is vague, what I mean is a business I can supervise, clear and accurate accounting(If I run a fish business I cant ask you to send me dead fishes as evidence).

I hav a lil business in 9ja as well that I just started doing this year.

Its simple . . . . Basically I rented an apartment and then I rented it out again for more money.
All the tenant do is pay the money into my 9ja account. No long stories.

All these with a lil help from my dad of course. Thats one of his businesses. He does that on a bigger scale but I'm just starting from a smaller scale.
He hooked me up with one of his tenants.

To avoid risks, make sure you have a couple of potential tenants in place before trying to rent the apartment.
Once you know how much your potential tenant wants to pay, then you add a percentage on the price you'd be paying for the rent.

It's not as simple as it seems but do your own research on it and dont forget about the legal stuffs too.
Good luck!!!

You need to be very careful, it's difficult to manage any business from abroad except the one you have established yourself and you have bunch of trusted staff and you know all the loopholes in the business so that you will always know what the business will give you in the worst day, week or month.

Good luck!

Extremely difficult to manage a business from UK except you find one that involves little management/supervision or you have trust worthy people to run it

I think tayo-uk is right. I will advice you start an online business. You can monitor it at your own convenience, the start up capital is low and the profit potential is very encouraging. I am deeply involved in blogging. If you are interested in learning the pros and cons of how to set up your own blog and make money from it, just download the attachment below.

There are many bizs you can do in Nigeria but for you to be in UK and the biz is up and running may be a tall dream.
You need to be on the ground and deal with some issues yourself.

I may ask several questions:-
do you want a service biz or buy and sell
do you want monthly income or annual
will it be your own biz or a partnership

can we talk?

@Tayo-UK has given you a very sound advice, be vere careful, if something sounds too good to be true, it usually is, there are so many fraudsters around, don't let fraudsters con you of your hard earned pounds sterling.

A business that readily comes to mind that is not capital intensive and can be run to a great degree from the uk or anywhere in the world is an online or web based business, this is because you don't necessarily need a physical presence.

Option 1: For example if you design a web based software application for corporate clients in Nigeria, you can develop your applications from your Laptop in the UK, deploy it unto a uk hosted server, and your clients in Nigeria can access it.

Option 2: You can organize training for corporate multinational companies in Nigeria, hire your instructors/trainers from the UK to go and deliver the training in Nigeria as and when, the training can be a computer based training or hands-on tutor led training, it can be anything from Management Training, SAP training or consultancy, these are all IT based, so you only hire the premises when you need it.

Most other businesses will to a large extent require your presence majority of the time.

Good luck.

Read books on how not to throw away money then get back to me.

One basic fact in business particularly one-man shows is the owners must manage and must be physically present, to confront the challenges and adapt to situations. Runaway owners always have themselves to blame.

You need to know what business you'd like to go into before you venture out there. Takin a trip to Naija should be your first step, that will give you a first hand knowledge of what's goin on!

Nigeria is a young country with an emerging economy with a large consumer based population.
You should know in 2008 alone, the Nigerian federal govt spent about 88billion Naira on the importation of rice to the country alone and about 150 billion naira on the importation of machineries. I am not saying you should deal with the federal government, since thats an extremely inpenetrable level, or go into importation; Im only implying that everything in Nigeria needs renewal. The education. Housing. Food. Manufacturing. Power. Construction. Everything needs some new influx of fresh ideas and approach. You dont need advise as much as commitment and been commited means you cant run the business by proxy unless its real estate which is currently been transformed. Real Estate has always been a business ran by proxies. You cant build and live in your estate alone. And you dont have to spend 7 hours daily baby sitting the hundreds of fenced acres in strategic locations within the country. You absence doesnt diminish your assets value.
Real Estate in Nigeria is a joke compared with the ones in countries like Dubai but we are recording steady progress and with people like Fashola, further developments are definite. Badagry is an emerging part of Lagos but still 2-3 years away from meaningful development. Its master plan is been currently carved out and its selling very cheap and a big opportunity to anyone who can take it. Mowe Ibafo is another treasure, a city which has radically developed from an overgrown jungle to a sprawling city and its influence has spread as far as Ofada, Owode, Papalantoro and its still spreading. Ifo, in ogun state is another strategic part of the country, with a newly constructed bridge making it alot more accessible to Lagosians, all the banks within the country, and every companies are opening branches with this boarder city of Ogun and Lagos transforming to a stifling commercial hub and merging point for both Lagosians and Ogun residents. The Sango's bridge has thrown up the price of land, and former bushy parts of the cities are been purchased by Chinese and Indian business men in droves. Ajah. Ikorodu. Lekki. Abuja are all there. No smart investor is crying fowl after investing within this location. You wont become as rich as Bill Gates if you invest within this locations, but you wont lose money, as long as you deal with honest and sincere people.
You can go into any business with the intention of making quick and smart profit or establishing your name. I am in for all the positive reasons.

The business I think you can manage from oversees is Cafe. You can actually monitor sales of tickets and printing by simply login in and viewing report.if you have ten PCs and one is not connected ,you can see it tru your timer .you need a good network person to help you resolve daily technical issues.

u can't invest based on "please what is the best business i can do in naija now".

what business passion do u have? what valuable experience do u possess?

i believe there are a lot of things in the uk market that are yet to be replicated here. with the right feasibility study and management, u can get something you know about going on without anyone 419ing you.

i am a project manager and am working on 2 projects (based on uk ideas). if u have an idea, send me ur email address, i can do a feasibility for you and also mange your project.

regards.

Please don't throw away your money. Landed property makes sense if you are not ready to relocate yet. Nigeria is a special case when it comes to money. You will hear stories until your head starts to spin.
This is not to discourage you, but to warn you. Whatever you do, don't assume anybody will he honest with you.

O boy
There is no way you can live in the uk and have a business in Nigeria. If it were in another country where things work, it would have been different but not naija, you have to monitor your business in person. To live in the UK and run a business in Nigeria, you need a trustworthy person. Am sorry if this sounds insulting but from my own experience, NIGERIANS ARE NOT TRUSTWORTHY, including family members.I can assure you, you will most likely regret it.
I would suggest you look for what you can invest in there in the UK or go back home and manage your business YOURSELF

Come to Belgium.

You can joint venture with us (Belgian and Nigerians) if you have minimum 15000euro/trip to invest.

No risk, cash and carry car biz. +200 cars, bus, trucks available that is suitable for Naija market.

We are inside this biz since many years. Company in Belgium and Nigeria.

How it go?

You stay in Belgium for 14days (or at least 4days) to prepare and buy the units with us together.

Then We start cutting cars/bus trucks to lower shipping cost, and to sell them as spare parts later.

The rest of the units we keep to ship directly.

We load professionally the trucks with the spare parts together.

We ship them at Antwerp port.

We all go naija.

We claim them together.

I know how to ship and claim them stress free at the lowest price.

We sell them at market price. I know how to sell them at the highest price.

If you want I help you also to get your money back in Europe at no risk and mostly free.

So buy in Belgium cash and carry, ship it, sell it, transfer your money back.

All this you supervise and do it yourself together with us without employing any agent or somebody that run the biz 4 you in naija.

To show you this biz and the way I ask 50% of your nett profit payable after finishing this first trip.

Next trips as partner no cost anymore. Each trip takes 5 weeks preparation and shipping.

This biz have a ROI of 75% till 150%.

See 4 my mail in my profile.

Re: What Business Can I Do In 9ja From U.k. Pls by Spyker: 4:57pm On Feb 25, 2010
Why do you want to stay in the Uk and set up business in Nigeria that you are not around to manage. Those who are even around to manage their business find it difficult when they are not around. I suggest you find another business in the Uk to invest your money or just save it in a Bank till you can return home to manage it, otherwise you will regret it.

On the second thought, if you have a trusted relative that manage a business for you, i suggest you make him/her a shareholder so that the issue of defrauding you or mismanaging the funds will be minimal.
