This might not come as news to some people but as we should know major telecom companies in Nigeria have increased their data charges without us knowing, example when you subscribe to MTN 1.5gig for #1000 naira you notice that it doesn’t last unlike before and before the end of 2weeks of usage poof your data is exhausted, although the 1.5gig has nothing to do with how much data YOU ACTUALLY HAVE as a matter of fact, it is just a counter that reads on their server that works under the some commands like when your data counter has read maximum usage of what was allotted to you it blocks you from having internet access, and 1.5 gig is the most used data plan because people think they actually have 1.5gig. But there is little or nothing we can do about that problem, only few telecom companies offer high data at the same price but their services are not available everywhere across the nation. Here I will give you some tips and tricks on how you can save data on your phone depending on the network you are using.
As we all know MTN and most telecom companies have upgraded their servers by employing hackers from across Nigeria to exploit vulnerabilities on their network system, so the possibility of us seeing another browsing cheat like the legendary simple server and others is almost near zero.
Tips and tricks for saving data:
(1) Download data saver app on your phone: this app disables background data access from apps running in background and also optimizes the phone so that unnecessary apps don’t consume data, most antivirus apps also come with this, and you can also switch to data saver on your phone if it came with that feature. You can as well set your connection as a metered connection on your laptop if you are running on windows 8 and higher it also performs the same function.
(2) Avoid heavy sites and social networks: like instagram (data viper), youtube and other sites that have heavy media contents, else get ready to renew your subscription in less than 2weeks
(3) Disable app auto updates on your phones mobile store: most mobile stores for phone’s auto update apps you downloaded, especially Google play store. You can disable such and this can save you a lot of data because most apps and games have large files associated with them.
(4) Avoid unnecessary downloads: I know some guys and ladies are chronic porn addicts that when they wish to manage their data they only end up downloading hundreds of x-rated contents on their phone, a friend of mine was a victim to this and always saw himself spending money on subscription at the end of the day
(5) Opt in for SME data plans or buy from genuine data resellers: I’ve bought data from resellers and they are cheaper and last longer than the normal subscription, why? Because these people who resell buy their data in bulk so when they send data to you its just part of the bulk usage they are sending that last longer than the official subscription. You can also buy wifi and VPN data plans from other telecom companies that are not so common depending on your location.
(6) Last but not the least avoid clicking on ads on most insecure websites, these ads can capture your IP address once you click on them and once your IP address is compromised by a third party they can clone your IP and use it to access the internet, this in turn results in heavy data drain on your part even when your data is switched off.
