Often, the air in the car will be warmer than the air outside the car (this happens in winter here). Moisture will condense on the inside of the windows if the outside air is cooler than the dew point inside the car.

Why does moisture condense on the surface of glasses inside a vehicle with occupants when it's raining and without the air conditioner running?

Cc: LionDeLeo.
If you closely see working of an air
conditioner, you will see that there
is a condenser coil and an
evaporator coil.
Condenser coil is placed on outer
side and has high temperature.
Whereas, evaporator coil is on inner
side is cool and is responsible for
cooling the air.
When air high on humdity comes in
contact with the evaporator coil,
humidity of air condenses to water
and air low on humidity is returned
to car.
Condensed water is discharged
through Ac drain.
Since, car is closed and it is
recommended that ventilation vent
should also remain closed when Ac
is on. Hence, humid air inside the
car is continuously dehumidified.
But due to this windshield gets cold
and fog may not form inside the
windshield, but it is formed outside
the windshields, specially on
outside of rear windshield. So, it is
recommended to switch on rear
defogger ( black lines across the
rear windshield).
Using Ac to defog works best in
rainy season only.
In winter you need to turn on
blower and change air flow to the
windscreen.

Outside humidity is why. Water will condense on a surface if the temperature of the surface is below the dew point of the air next to that surface. So you need warm, humid air next to a cooler surface to fog up.

If it is very humid outside and you're running the air conditioner inside the car, water can condense on the outside of the windows. Using the windshield wipers and the rear defroster can get rid of condensation there by wiping it off or making it evaporate.

Often, the air in the car will be warmer than the air outside the car (this happens in winter here). Moisture will condense on the inside of the windows if the outside air is cooler than the dew point inside the car. The air conditioner dehumidifies air because water condenses inside it when the air goes past the cold tubes with the refrigerant inside. Heating it up way past its dew point makes it feel dry, and it is dry condensation,it'll help evaporate any condensation even more quickly the hotter it is because heat is needed to cause the liquid water to change phase to a gas.

Water condenses on the glass surface because of its high humidty and Cold glass

The humidity during rain is much higher. and the raindrops makes the glass cold thereby cooling off through that manner as the air cannot directly absorb the humidity then z

Because when warm air meets with cool air, mist is generated... The people in the car are obviously breathing and the warm temperatures mixes with the cold temperatures due to the rain..

Re: 100k For Lucky Student Nairalanders. by Nobody: 8:04pm On Sep 18, 2017
Condensation happens when there’s a difference between the temperature and moisture levels inside and outside the car. When warm, humid air meets cold glass, water from the air condenses on the glass, forming water droplets or fog.

The temperature of the windscreen condenses it. Air inside the car is room temperature but when it rains the glass gets cold and the water vapour, losing heat to the windscreen changes form to liquid
You got it right. So also did most respondents. smiley

The glass is alot cooler than the air inside the cabin. This air, amongst other things, contains moisture which comes from the air we breath and evaporating sweat from our skin. When the ac isn't running, there is no means to evacuate this moisture and it is trapped in the cabin. This then condenses upon cooler sources (the glases in this case) when it makes contact with such resulting in what is observed under such conditions of rainfall.

Condensation happens when moisture laden air comes in contact with a cooler surface. The cooler surface draws heat from boundary layer, and since cooler air cannot hold as much humidity as warmer air, the moisture gets deposited on the surface.

Moisture will condense on a surface if the temperature of the surface is below the dew point of the air next to that surface. So you need warm, humid air next to a cooler surface to fog up.

Moisture condenses inside the surface of a glass because the temperature inside the vehicle is higher than the temperature outside the vehicle. Cc Omenka
