Nigeria is a country with a broad platform of diverse opportunities. Whether small or top-notch, careers are available and are created regularly. One of such careers, which exist on a controversial level, is writing. Among many, the “writing” career has been approached from different standpoints and opinions. Living in Nigeria, achievement career wise is tied to particular job lines and positions, those with an aura of strength and whose job titles already give out what the person would do and where he will work. For instance, the title “Doctor” effortlessly gives the clue that one either works in a hospital or is in the academic field, and so does a “Banker”, “Engineer” and “Teacher”. Apparently, introducing oneself with the title “writer” always puts a quizzical expression on the face of anyone you engage in a conversation with. What is writing really about and why should it be given so much importance? What significance does it hold? These and many more questions are immediately triggered in the respondent. In a bid to focus attention, an attempt can be made in defining the term “writing” even though the depth and real truth of it cannot be captured in words. Writing generally involves the ability to use words tactically to produce an idea, not just mere spelling out words to form sentences. Sadly, in Nigeria, writing is seen as a mere language skill that every literate person should possess. Saying you have a passion towards writing is like choosing to be dormant. Because of the presence of tact and the aim of producing an idea from words, one that engages the minds of people and triggers the imagination and one that promotes a cause, not everyone can be seen or described as a writer even though anyone can attempt it.
