Investing in food
It may come as a surprise to you that over your life time, whether you think about it or not, you are spending your money on investments that will make some kind of return (negative or positive) in the future. For example, the money spent on education is usually expected to make a positive return in increased earning potential, access to knowledge and the tools and opportunity to make a difference in the world. The money spent on medicines is expected to bring an increase in life expectancy and increase in quality of life. So how about the food that we eat? Can money spent on food be seen as an investment? I suppose food does not immediately appear to be an investment as it is a necessity and a basic requirement to live so you do not have a choice as to whether you should ‘invest’ or not. However, while you cannot survive without food, you can choose which food to eat and which not to eat. In addition, there is clear evidence that food can play a part in improving or reducing quality of health. This means that food can affect length of life and quality of life. Looking at food from this perspective, it certainly qualifies
as an investment as money spent today can affect an outcome in the future.

Making wise investments
As mentioned earlier, once the amount of money to be spent on an acquisition is known, the second question is usually whether the buyer is paying too much. The cost of food can vary from place to place, however, one thing is certain - if that food contributes to the consumption of excessive dietary salt, that food is costing too much. Research has shown that excess salt intake (over 5g of salt per day) contributes to a lot of health problems in the future, from high blood pressure to kidney problems. No matter how delicious the food may taste at the time of consumption, I think most people will accept that it is not worth losing their health or losing extended time with their children/grandchildren.

Steps to change
So, are you paying too much for your delicious meal? Are you making gains now for potentially big loses in the future? You can reduce the price
that you will pay for that food by beginning to cut down on your salt intake. A first step may be to eliminate salt from the dining table and to
have your cooked meals without adding table salt. A subsequent step can be to avoid buying processed foods with high salt content and to be
aware of the salt content in the snacks that you eat. You can then graduate to a place where salt is eliminated from your list of ingredients, regardless of what you are cooking. By taking some of these steps, you will be investing in a healthier future for yourself and your family. You will be able to look back in years to come and hopefully reach the conclusion that health benefits gained by far justifies the changes that you made to the salt content of your diet.

Highlight

In 2010, an estimated 1.65 million cardiovascular deaths worldwide – or 1 out of every 10 cardiovascular deaths—were
attributed to salt consumption above the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended intake of 5g per day. About 80% of such deaths occur in
low and middle-income countries
