Good Morning, I am starting a series that will help you lose weight and belly fat in 5 days without you starving yourself or killing yourself at the gym. Do you know your body mass index ?Let us begin with some basic definitions that you need to know and we are going to do that in a lay man’s language so that it will be very easy for you to understand okay. Like I always say, STOP TRYING TO LOSE WEIGHT THE HARD WAY
Over weight and obesity can defined as excessive fat accumulation that may harm your health.
Body mass index (BMI) is an index of weight-for-height that is used to classify overweight and obesity in adults. It is defined as your weight in kilograms divided by the square of your height in metres (kg/m2). Let us assume that your weight is 5kg and your height in metres is 2m, it then means that your body mass index will be 5/22 you got that ? So check your body mass index now
- Overweight is a BMI greater than or equal to 25
- Obesity is a BMI greater than or equal to 30.
- If your BMI is getting close to 25, you have to watch it closely because you are entering a danger zone
Facts about overweight and obesity
Recent WHO (World Health Organization) global estimates are as follows:
- In 2014 more than 1.9 billion adults 18 years and older were overweight. Out of the number, about 600 million adults were obese
- 13% of the worlds population (11% of men and 15% of women) were obese in 2014
- 39% of adults from 18 years and above (38% of men and 40% of women) were overweight in 2014
- Between 1980 and 2014, the world prevalence of obesity more than doubled.
- Overweight and obesity are linked to more deaths worldwide than underweight.
CAUSES OF OBESITY AND OVERWEIGHT
Obesity and overweight is mainly caused by an energy imbalance between calories consumed and calories expanded .In every part of the world, there has been;
• An increased intake of energy dense foods that is high in fat, lack of physical activity due to increase in sedentary nature of many forms of work, changing modes of transportation and increasing urbanization ,all these have contributed immensely to the increase in the number of obese and overweight individuals all over the world.
Health consequences of overweight and obesity, high BMI (Body Mass Index) are a major risk factor for diseases such as;
• Cardiovascular diseases (mainly heart disease and stroke), which were the leading cause of death in 2012 according to WHO(World health organization)
• Diabetes
• Muscoskeletal disorders
• Some cancers (including endometrial, breast, prostate, kidney, and colon)
The risk for these diseases increases with increase in BMI (Body Mass Index) . Let us stop here for today. Watch out for my next lecture
