Why can't we print the $5.5bn ourselves instead of borrowing since we can print money ourselves?

I believe if we print the money ourselves, we can use it for whatever we want and we won't need to pay back money to anybody.

Nairalanders pls! I need explanation.

It leads to inflation

Do you consider your exchange value and the effects of inflation?
1million Zimbabwean dollars could only buy a bottle of beer. Are you ready to buy a loaf of bread for #2000?

No, it would not, as government borrowing does not create new money. There's are a lot of technicalities involved.

This particular borrowing is aimed at maintaining foreign exchange rate figures.
We haven't learnt anything at all

Print the goddamn thing and before the West will wake up and suspect anything you've already used it in buying shares, gold, companies from their economy while bringing in policies that will lure their investors down here with the promise of cheap labor and wait till everywhere is calm.

Haven't you heard about currency manipulation by China that America keeps crying about while they are the chief currency manipulators. grin

Very funny question.. Even the naira sef, we cant just be printing it anyhow..
it would lead to inflation, the money no go get value. more money chasing fewer goods.
Instead of you to give a very lucid explanation, you are saying the question is funny....

@topic...I still don't understand oh, economists in the house should explain well. Why not print the money in naira form and use it for industrialization and urbanization that will draw foreign investors our way. Please make una explain o. Thanks

printing money is different from printing bank notes and coins. Nigerian security and mints deals with printing bank note and coins.
Printing money involves the CBN just creditting an account with some particular amount which they dont have out of thin air with the hope that the account will make the repayment into the thin air where it came from in the future, and CBN can only do that with the currency they control i.e. the naira, and not with the dollars

Wrong, Government is borrowing to fund infrastructure like the Railway projects across the country.
If the government borrow just to shore up foreign exchange rate,it will come off with a far worse economy wink[color=#990000]

OP, Money is a store of value created. You dont just simply print money, like people have said it would lead to inflation. You create value and echange that value for money. Have you not noticed that most of the money around the world is electronic/digital and not actual print money?

Do you really think that when you do a transfer from 1st bank to Zenith that 1st BAnk will actually carry physical cash an go and give Zenith..............if you do then ......................................

Note that printing of money also cost lots of capital... It's quite easier to borrow than to print.

In a nut shell, money printing cost more.

Yet people like you call Buhari dullard. Shameful. Do your investigation when America is crying wolf for China it is because China devalued their currency which is very smart.

The western world won't appreciate an export based economy like China to devalue their currency but will want countries like ours to devalue ours because then they get our stuffs for cheap while China's will be expensive to purchase for them.

It is common logic the west use against third world countries to systematically steal from them. Ever seen any import based economy that takes IMF's advise to devalue their currency recover? It is rare even if such exists.

But why Op?? I ll give u an instance..

When Mansa Kanka Musa left for Mecca, he took tons of gold along with him and gave it to people he met on his way till he got to Mecca know what happened next? There was a very large circulation of gold in Mecca that it literally became worthless. Gold being a medium of exchange then in the middle east, they had to persuade him to stop expressing his benevolent nature before he runs Mecca aground with gold..

In other words, too much of everything is bad.. Just imagine everybody in Nigeria now with nothing less than a billion dollars in their various bank accounts.. U think Nigeria won't disappear into the abyss?
