Google Pixel 2: What You Need To Know by Ugoeze2016: 3:07pm On Oct 11, 2017
Weeks after teasing its fans with the ‘funny you should ask’ ad on YouTube, Google finally launched the powerful Pixel 2 during an elaborate ceremony on October 4,2017. It would be funny to expect nothing but the best from the owners of the Android software, and they have delivered in style. If the camera of Google Pixel 1 was tagged the best android camera ever, what would we call the much-improved one in its successor, the Google Pixel 2? If this is Google’s answer to Apple’s iPhone 8, many will agree it is a strong one. Let’s have a look at what makes this Android 8.0 powered beast arguably the best android device ever.

Dimension and Design

Similar to what we saw with the Pixel 1, Google has retained the combination of glass and metal, but the good news is that the design of Google Pixel 2 would wow more users than its predecessor did. Thanks to a smart and skillful blend of the glass and metal, the phone has a more polished look and will give a lovely feel when handled.
This device also features the movement of the fingerprint scanner to the metal body which means we will get to see fewer fingerprint smears on the rear glass. At the bottom, you will find the hidden Google logo and at the top left, is a single camera.
The large bezels remain both below and above the front display which may disappoint a few after the gorgeous bezel-less designs we saw with the iPhone X and Samsung S8.

To trigger the Google Assistant, all you need do is squeeze the sides lightly. To set up the Assistant, all one needs do is use a hand to squeeze the sides of the phone and you will find yourself at the setup page.
With a dimension of 145.7 x 69.7 x 7.8 mm, the Pixel 2 is similar in size to last year’s Pixel 1, but it is easier to handle than the Pixel 2 XL which was launched on the same day.

Resolution and Display

The 5-inch screen is smaller than that of its competitors which makes it easier to hold with one hand. Although the AMOLED technology adopted in the Pixel 2 may not earn rave reviews for innovation and a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels, the display is quite impressive.
The clarity of the images and text is top-notch, and the colors are brilliant which should satisfy the needs of many.
The always-on feature is one of the highlights that set Google Pixel 2 apart from others. With the always-on feature, you can see the date, time, text and email notifications even when the screen of your phone is off.
The phone can detect what track/song is currently on and it would inform you through the always on display also.

Camera

The 12mp rear camera is boosted with the portrait mode which would give that of the iPhone 8 plus a run for its money. Unlike its competitor though, Pixel 2 uses just one sensor to provide the needed background effect.
There is a front 8mp camera which also boasts of the portrait mode. Test runs even in non-ideal light situations reveal that the quality of selfies was superb.
The camera also has functions like autofocus and shutter speed which are verifiably very responsive. The camera is equipped enough to snap great pictures in low light.

Power and OS

Google Pixel 2 runs on the new Android 8.0 Oreo and Google also announced that Pixel users would be the first to get updates for the next three years.
This amazing device will be powered by the latest 64-bit Octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 at 2.35GHz which means you may not find a faster and ‘smoother’ device anywhere.

Other features

The Google Pixel 2 is the first phone to come with a Nano e-sim card slot which allows users to change their network provider without replacing Sims.
Pixel 2 packs a 2700 mah battery with fast charging support.
The headphone jack is absent in this edition of Google Pixel, but the device will support dual-band Wifi802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth v5.0, and USB 2.0 type C port. To promote connectivity, Google has infused a reversible connector into this beautiful phone.

Pricing and Release Date

The Pixel 2 is expected to be available in ‘just black’, what Google calls ‘a kinda blue’ and Pure white. The 64GB variant should cost around $649 (N237,534) while the 128GB version will cost $749 (N274,134).
Google Pixel 2 is expected to roll out on October 19, but you can now register your pre-order on Google play store.

Conclusion

Google Pixel 2 has a lot of things going for it. The Camera is arguably the best, it is perhaps faster than every other and who else would make the perfect version of android if not Google?
Although the Pixel 2 XL released same day looks more fascinating, the Pixel 2 is more affordable despite boasting most of the same specs. Aside from the more prominent bezels which are bound to put some people off and perhaps your budget, I can’t find a reason why you should not get this near perfect phone
