Ekiti State Government has confirmed two suspected monkeypox cases in the state, even as Ogun State Government refuted a report credited to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, listing the state among those affected by the viral disorder.“We have two cases at Okemesi Ekiti. Tests are still being carried out and not until it is confirmed, we can’t come out with any official statement”, the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Modupe Alade said in a press conference in Ado Ekiti. The victims, Alade noted, were discovered in Okemesi Ekiti, a border town with Osun State in Ekiti West Local Government , have been quarantined while their blood samples have been taken to Abuja for laboratory tests. Meanwhile, in Abeokuta, the Ogun State government refuted the report credited to the NCDC, saying there was no incident of monkey pox in the state. The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Babatunde Ipaye who revealed this in his office, said the case has not been comfirmed as a case of Monkey Pox in the first instance and that no due process was completed before the case was reported. “It was very surprising as the State Commissioner for Health and the Chief epidemiologist of the state to hear that Ogun State was listed, We have not incidented any confirmed case of monkey pox in the state, Ogun state doesn’t have a single case.

31 suspected cases of monkey pox reported in 7 states – NCDC ON OCTOBER 9, 2017

Lagos – The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) says 31 suspected cases of monkey pox have so far been reported in seven states across the country.
Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, the National Coordinator/Chief Executive Officer of NCDC, made this known on Monday in Abuja.

According to Ihekweazu, following the notification of a suspected monkey pox outbreak on Sept. 22, 2017 in Bayelsa, other suspected cases have been reported from six more states. He listed the affected states as Bayelsa, Rivers, Ekiti, Akwa Ibom, Lagos, Ogun and Cross Rivers. Ihekweazu said that samples had been collected from each suspected case for laboratory confirmation. “Results are still being awaited. So far, there have been no deaths recorded. “It is unlikely that many of the suspected cases are actually monkey pox, but all are being investigated. “All the suspected cases are currently receiving appropriate medical care, and the patients are all improving clinically in their various states,’’ he said. Ihekweazu said that the Federal Ministry of Health, through the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), was supporting the affected states to ensure the outbreak is brought under control and to limit further spread. “NCDC has activated an Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) to coordinate the outbreak investigation and response across the affected states. “The EOC is currently supporting State Ministries of Health in their response to the outbreak through active case finding, epidemiological investigation and contact tracing. “Measures have been put in place to ensure effective sample collection and testing for laboratory confirmation. “Risk communication activities have been heightened to advise the public on preventive measures. All 36 States and the FCT have been notified for preparedness,’’ the NCDC national coordinator said. (NAN)

So people saying that Igbo people are stupid and paranoid should really answer the question as to why not use that time and energy to work on states where peoples lives are in danger?

[b]Nigeria: No Monkey Pox in Enugu - Health Commissioner[/b
By Dennis Agbo
Enugu — Enugu State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Fintan Ekochin, has dismissed rumour making the rounds that there was a reported case of monkey pox in the state.

The commissioner said Enugu State has surveillance team, a set of officers distributed across the 17 local government areas of the state, whose job is to look out for diseases that we overlook.

"They are on duty everyday, since last year, since Ebola, they are on duty.

"They look out for yellow fever, lasava fever, Ebola, every kind of disease, including cholera, and they make report available immediately. So we have no reported outbreak of monkey pox in Enugu."

Ekochin stated that the defence mechanism in the state is surveillance, which he said is continuous through disease notification officers at the local government areas.

"Again, we have the state epidemiologist who is a medical doctor in the Ministry of Health that coordinates all these people. So surveillance is steadily on which we do by ourselves or support from partners for advocacy whenever necessary," said Ekochin

How to protect yourself from monkeypox

There are number of measures that can be taken to prevent infection with monkeypox virus:

Avoid contact with animals that could harbor the virus (including animals that are sick or that have been found dead in areas where monkeypox occurs).
Avoid contact with any materials, such as bedding, that has been in contact with a sick animal.
Isolate infected patients from others who could be at risk for infection.
Practice good hand hygiene after contact with infected animals or humans. For example, washing your hands with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
Use personal protective equipment (PPE) when caring for patients.

If you are in those 7 States here are the symptoms:
Monkeypox includes fever, malaise, headache, and sometimes sore throat and cough. A distinguishing feature of monkeypox from smallpox is lymphadenopathy (swollen lymph nodes). This typically occurs with fever onset, 1 to 2 days before rash onset, or rarely with rash onset. Lymph nodes may swell in the neck (submandibular & cervical), armpits (axillary), or groin (inguinal) and occur on both sides of the body or just one.
