It was expected that you will at least consult a real doctors before posting salary scales for the profession. But alas you consulted only mysalaryscale.com. Let me enlighten you abt the scale in my centre.

1. A house officer (doctor on internship) which last for 1year earn around #170000 ( some centers pay more or less ). This is the entry level after medical school but as someone said its difficult to get placement, becos there are few hospitals that are approved to offer the programme. Added to this is that if you cannot get placement within 2years you have to write the medical and dental council exam again and renew ur temporary license. After housejob you are given a permanent license to practice without supervision.

Now this is where it gets interesting cos there are so many options available. MO, teaching, residency, public health, politics, business and what hv you

2. MO is medical officer who is employed by a hosp to work a general practitioner. No added qualification is required and their entry level is #250000 and above. They are promoted and salary increases just like any ministry job till they reach the ceiling. Those at the apex earn slightly above #700000

3. Teaching: a medical doctor can go into just teaching in a medical school at the preclinical level. Additional certification is required (masters and currently Phd). Their salary level starts at around #380000 some centres pay more. Teachers at the clinical side also render clinical services and are called honorary consultants their pay grade is different

4. Residency is a training that allows a doctor to specialise in a specific area or become a consultant. Places offering residency are not equal to d number of doctors seeking d training so again it is difficult to get in. There are different cadres and last on average 6-8 years, Some are as short as 4 years

a) Junior registrars (2 ans half years) salary starts at N 350,000 currently (was less than this in the past) after the part 1 exams they progress to senior registrar
b) Senior registrar whose salary currently starts arouund #500,000. After part 2exams becomes a consultant who is either released or retained by his institution
c) Consultants are appointed by the hosp. They are at the peak of their career. Their salary is #800,000 for the new ones and around #1,200,000 for the senior ones. This is why JOHESU members wants to become consultants
so much. In addition to this pay, this are the groups that can consult in different hospital or have private and big shorts patients that they attend to. Depending on how well connected a consultant a is they can earn more than 5times the figures quoted above

5. The public health physicians can be thru masters in public health or residency in public health. They are the ones that populate the ministry of health and other health related agencies, NGOs, WHO and other health related local and international organisations. They get more grants than consultants in other fields and are often quite boxed up.

6. Being a medical doctor does not bar anyone from owning businesses or partaking in politics. Although some prefer to do that after becoming consultant. Infact I know a consultant who owns a car dealership firm and Ngige and Saraki are medical doctors.

7. Now while waiting for placement or appointment as consultant or commonly before making up your mind which area you want to go into a doctor can work in private hospitals where they owners don't pay so well. The pay could between <#100,000 to >500,000 depending on the location

8. Lemme also address the issue of doctors being broke, yes doctors are human being and each individual is prone to making either good or bad choices, invest wisely or live lavishly, or too lazy to seize the many opportunities being a doctor offers. Our teachers used to tell us that as long you know what you are doing as a doctor you might not necessarily be the Dangotes or Adenugas but you will be very comfortable in life and they were very right.

On a final note, lemme also inform many commentors who probably wanted studying medicine but couldnt and sieze the opportunity to insult every thread related to Nigerian doctors. Yes Nigerian doctors are the worst paid doctors in the entire world, but they are doing their best and can never go hungry if they know what they are doing. Ask yourself this question why doctors trained in Nigeria are among the very best when they leave the country? Its simple, human capital alone is not enough to power any system, you need economic and technological capital. Imagine if all the monies spent on medical tourism by elites, government official and indeed any Nigerian who can afford abroad was used to provide state of arts facilities and needed training of relevant health workers, Nigeria will become a centre of medical tourism itself.

I was told a story in medical school of a top govt official during the Gen Abdulsalam Abubarka regime who went to South Africa for a relative's brain, on arrival he was told that they are waiting for the surgeon from Nigeria (prof. B.B. Shehu). The surgery went very fine and afterwards the govt official was ashamed. This led to building of a neurosurgery centre in Sokoto state.

We can make Nigeria work if we can only have faith on ourselves

Are we in the same country? Registrar's starting salary @ 350k? Hmmmnn

well how I wish all these figures esp the high end ones are true everywhere. Here in Kano State, the state government pays #148,522 to house officers and about 170k plus to starting medical officers. The consultants start at 400k plus though most might be in visiting capacity I. e also working with the federal teaching hospital.

And this is the same government that wants to ban doctors Fromm doing pp. When they can't guarantee what is paid to doctors esp at state level, the only option they have is for doctors to be allowed to do locum in private hospitals when not on duty.
They will have to improve salaries of doctor and ensure compliance among all levels of government federal and state to be able to completely ban private practice for most medical doctors. Even at that private hospitals might sometimes require specialist review or assistance from consultants working in government hospital

Sometimes I do not understand whether its the use of English that is our problem, or something else. Every time you people would say Medical Doctors "deal with lives- human lives". Therefore you are saying Pilots deal with animals, Engineers deal with animals, Lawyers deal with animals, Accountants deal with animals, Psycologists deal with animals, Pharmacists deal with animals, and so on. When a bridge or a storey building collapses as a result of design errors or wrong implementation or whatever reason, and many people die in the process, then you will know if Engineers are not dealing with human lives too. Or when injustice is taking its toll on you and a Lawyer stands in between and you escape rotting in jail, we shall know if lawyers are dealing with human beings or not. When some Medical Doctors have psychological problems they run to psycologist for counselling. Are you now saying psycologist don't "deal with lives- human lives". Almost all professions deal with humans in one way or the other. Medicine & Surgery is one of the best courses to study here in Nigeria. The reason they are given this preferential treatment in Nigeria is because before the country will get to this level they have fought for their rights and privileges and welfare packages and other bonuses under the International Labour Laws(which other labour unions cannot fight for) through a strong and a no-nonse body that they have- The Nigeria Medical and Dental Association(NMDA). This is why it seems as if they are always holding the Government to ransom like ASUU. In essence. I am saying Medical Doctors are not the only ones that deal with human lives. A man's life is even riskier in the hands of the Pilot while in the air. Don't get it twisted, Medicine & Surgery is one of the best professions.
what has your post got to do with the topic now? undecided

Some would be surprised to hear that some doctors offer to work for free just so that they can be done with the housejob and prevent the license from expiring.
What lies after NYSC is pitiable. Its modern day slavery as you work 24/7 only to be paid a paltry 120k.
Why do you think we're leaving the country in droves? Just wait for the statistics from the next plab exams, you would be shocked at the numbers .

Who said what OP posted was not true? With entry point of doctors being level 12, they earn as much as that with those who do multiple jobs also known as PP plus those that are keen on collecting 10% from pharmaceutical reps and private lab owners. They earn this much yet you see them opening thier mouth to shout marginalisation and wants to down tool. Yet they are the head of very health institutions, they head all the juicy departments and who is now marginalising who? They divert patients to thier private practice, they engage in polypharmacy just to sell for a Pharma rep in exchange for 10 %, they send patients to go to do lab tests mostly not relevant just to get commission from the labs. God is watching them in 3D.

First off, no doctor starts off at Grade Level 12. Let's put that aside and address the other "facts".

What percentage of doctors fulfil the above stated?
0.1%?
0.2%?
Perhaps as high as 1%

How many doctors engage in PP? Where are these PP points to start with? How many hospitals do you know without full-time staffers?
How many doctors' paychecks have you seen? Quoting figures from government approved circulars which would probably never be fully implemented? Definitely not hearsay (you're beyond that - as is your audience).

It's nice to be sensational while reporting things (gets the crowd eager for more) but we need facts to move us forward, not drama.

Quote your sources (better yet, paste legit links here; not of sites claiming to know but of agencies/institutions actually paying) and your credibility would be upheld.

PS: I know numerous doctors, work with them, have them as friends, extended family members and have one as a brother.

One love
Peace
I'm outta here!

Edit: for the record, most doctors in employment are in private firms. A few more in state institutions. Discounting wages of those in NGOs, states mostly pay less than the federal institutions and private mostly pay half or less (asides some really big ones in the larger cities which might pay even more than the federal ones). Permit me to answer one of my questions above and tell you that the salaries paid are quite different from those approved. Then again, that isn't peculiar to people in the medical profession as we all groan under delayed salaries, outstanding wages/benefits, ill-treatment, substandard facilities and poorly implemented policies.

Re: Salaries Of Medical Doctors In Nigeria by SamySamy123: 8:25am On May 28, 2021
The salary of a Medical doctor in Nigeria is regulated by the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure, otherwise known as (CONMESS) for the federal level and Public hospitals, while that of Medical Doctors in private hospitals and practice is regulated by the proprietor of the hospital or it’s relevant board.

Medical officers: After NYSC, a Medical doctor could work in a Private or Public hospitals. For those that intend to work in a Public or Government hospital, which here comprises of both State and Federal hospitals, a medical officer earns around 150,000 – 200,000. A Registrar earns around 220,000 – 300,000, a senior Registrar earns around 260,000- 470,000, while a Consultant earns 450,000- 800,000. A senior consultant could earn even more.

Doctors in Private Hospitals
: The Salary of Doctors in a Private hospital is relatively low compared to Doctors in Government hospitals. A resident Doctor could earn around 40,000- 100,000, A Registrar 120,000- 250,000, A Consultant 400,000- 600,000 Naira.
