The capital city of Cross River State, Calabar, will be in the centre of attention on November 30, 2013, Saturday, when several Nollywood stars led by Rita Dominic and Kate Henshaw light the Africa’s tallest Xmas tree.

Other stars confirmed to grace the event are Gideon Okeke and Ihuoma Nwigwe. Top comedian, Akpororo is also billed to crack the ribs of guests.

The event will also mark the start of the annual one month-long Calabar Festival. The event has become a world class event, which attracts guests for all over Nigeria and the whole world.

The Christmas tree-lighting ceremony is definitely going to be an epic event, which will be held at the Millennium Park in Calabar. The Festival will be witnessed and declared open by Governor Liyel Imoke at the Calabar Municipality Council grounds.

The tree-lighting ceremony will be followed by the Paradise City Walk against HIV/AIDS the next day, while the likes of Samsong, Obiwon, Segun Obe, Kage, Nnanke and Darlene, who will be performing at the Millennium Park by 7 p.m., are billed for the post-walk event tagged ‘World Aids Day Charity Concert’.

The Festival Village, according to a source in the Government House, is being moved from its traditional ground at the Cultural Centre, owing to the on-going construction work on the new shopping complex there.

The tourist city is already wearing new looks, in anticipation of festive events.

In the spirit of the Yuletide, the First Lady of Lagos State, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola lit up a giant Christmas Tree at the weekend at the Heritage Garden, Oshodi, Lagos, southwest Nigeria.

Fashola said the Christmas Tree was built by the Lagos State Government as part of effort to light up the city of Lagos this season, adding that the 27m by 8 diameter Tree “is the tallest in the whole of West Africa if not Africa.”

She enjoined all to be their brother’s keeper, saying; “It is a season of love, let us be our brother’s keeper. It is a season to share love with people, we need to support one another by extending a hand of help to the needy at this season. That is the reason for this season,” she said.

Commissioner for the Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello said the event which was meant to light up Lagos State at the Christmas season would be replicated in other parts of the state.

“From now on, it is going to be Merry Christmas for everybody. Oshodi may be the beginning, there will be others, we want to light the Christmas Tree.

This is going to be the first one, it is not going to be the last. Before we finish this administration, I can assure you that we are going to have many Christmas trees in Lagos,” he stated.

SEE Christmas Tree That Cost Imo State Government N600 Million (PHOTO)

The Imo state government has broken a record by erecting the tallest Christmas tree in Nigeria.

Earlier this month, Governor Rochas Okorocha reportedly approved N600 million for this Christmas tree and New Year decorations.

The cost is really shocking considering the fact that the state workers have not been paid salaries for several months.

Undoubtedly, the tree and its price have triggered emotional reactions among Nigerians who started blaming Governor Okorocha, appealing to his conscience.

Meanwhile, Chief Emeka Ihedioha, a former deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, also criticized the governor for spending such huge sum of money on Christmas tree and decorations.

"It is ridiculous and indeed smacks of insensitivity for this government to spend over N600 million on decorations when families can no longer afford their meals and basic needs as a result of non-payment of salaries, pensions and other entitlements," he noted.

The issue is that all 3 States had tallest Christmas tree at one time or the other and they must have cost same amount and served same purpose but while that of Lagos and Crossriver were celebrated, that of Imo was turned into an issue using the media. I just had to pick naij.com to show the hypocrisy. If any other State should extend free education to University level, it would be celebrated because it's not easy except the manager of the State is very smart.

Where is your proof that they all cost 600 million?

The 600million is a hoax and no truth. The issue I raised is how they celebrated the other two but now looked for any means possible to turn that of Okorocha to bad news.
