Bmw N42 Engine (e46) by Kollyman: 9:05pm On Oct 22, 2017
Greetings,
I recently discovered a funny sound when I rev high my BMW E46 with N42 engine. the noise becomes more louder when I delay in changing gear most especially from gear 1 to 2 or 2 to 3.

the truth is that, no one has been able to explain what is happing to my engine. I recently went to change my gear oil thinking the issue is from there but all to no avail. the funny thing about the engine is that; it works so well, steam in the morning, doesn't smoke, the general performance is cool but the knocking sound (as said by my mechanic) is a serious concern to me.

I have decided to change the engine but these mechanic guys would never stop their evil deeds as majority of them came with a ridiculously high bill.

I need someone to give me a good price probably with contact of a BMW engine seller in Ladipo. Most especially, I want to have a clear price idea before I put my head therein.
1. What's the price of a complete engine with gear?
11. price of engine without gear (complete)?
111. the price of half and top engine (Borale) I.e without 3.alternators, ignition, power steering pump etc.

thank you in anticipation.

Before pulling the drain plug under your pocket, have you checked your valvetrain?
It could be that your timing chain is slack & slapping against the engine block. Perhaps the tensioner is damaged or the chain has stretched.
Also check valves & springs.

However, the challenge I have is that I'm not sure if any of these my "Kabiru" mechanics can handle that.

Do you know of any competent mechanic to check and handle that in Ladipo? Though I am currently in one of the south/south states.

I do not think the problem needs an engine change, try and solve the issue and don't think of a new engine yet.
What if you get a new engine and there is another funny sound from another corner, you will keep changing engine i guess.
Do a scan or let a professional BMW techie do a proper diagnosis for you and get back to the house. There should be a solution to it.
However, if you insist on getting another engine, i can help get the price of the complete engine or borale, but i would prefare you diagonise the engine properly and get the cause of that funny sound. Engine steaming and running smoothly is not a sign of an engine going down.

e] Thank you sir.

but my challenge is getting a good mechanic that specialise s on BMW. It would take a good mechanic to phantom what is going on in the engine. I would be glad to rectify the issue rather than replacing the engine.

hi everyone, i am actually a new bmw user. its been my dream car ever since.........and i was fortunate to get a E46 last year Nov. i later saw signs of oil in the radiator and my mechanic told me the cylinders was bad that we i should consider replacing.......that was done anyway and hell was let loose.....the car wouldnt rev or drive as it usually does. i met an elderly mech who was able to salvage the situation but something tells me they havent got it complete. theres this shaking i experience when the engine is on idle mode..........been drining it like that for a year but i wish i never touched the engine

yes I do.

I even had to change to Total oil recently because of the issue,

Most of the Mobil oil you buy from the shops were refilled

I finally got a solution to the engine issue stated above.

I drove the car all away from South/South (over 450km) to Ladipo market in Lagos where I was told that the problem is common with that type of engine.

However, I was told that there is an object in the engine called metal (according to the mechanic) which is around the crankshaft. He said if the metal starts wearing-off that is when you start hearing that kind of noise from the engine.

The guy billed me 15k as workmanship (not negotiable) while I will still be the one to pay for the parts.

I spent about 35k on the vehicle (which include replacement of the power steering pump) and the noise is gone. Please see the picture of the said metal attached.

Thanks to everyone on nairaland.
