Many cough preparation, especially cough suppressant, contain codeine or DXM (dextromethorphan). Codeine and other opiates are very effective cough suppressants, But they are addictive. DXM, a powerful psychoactive drug, is particularly addictive. Cough syrup abusers can obtain the drug from their doctors by complaining about cough and other cold symptoms. Addicts commonly point to three reasons for using cough syrup.

It's legal (and therefore more acceptable)
It's low-cost or free
It's seen as being safer than other drugs of abuse


Methods Use

Some addicts drink cough syrup undiluted or mixed with sodas. Others soak marijuana joints with the syrup. DXM can also be extracted from cough preparations and taken orally, injected, and occasionally freebased.

Effects on the body

Codeine, like all opiates, is very addictive, both psychologically and physically. if you use codeine and promethiazine cough syrup for a couple of weeks, everyday, you will become physically dependent on the drug. if you become physically dependent on the drug, you will need to take it every day, more than once a day, just to keep the sickness of codeine withdrawal and detoxification at bay. Although codeine is not as potent or addictive as heroin, the addiction and withdrawal symptoms share many similarities to a heroin addiction and withdrawal.
Codeine and other codeine-like drugs (narcotic drugs) can cause constipation through its action of inhibiting or slowing down gut movements.
Through this action, codeine is sometimes used as a short-term measure to treat diarrhea.
Codeine consumption is habit-forming and can cause dependence.
Codeine can be safely stopped as soon as relief of symptoms is achieved.


Addicts take at least one 60ml to 100ml bottle a day to give hallucinatory feelings

Due to the high rate of cough mixtures with codeine, efforts are made by pharmaceutical companies and the government to curb it by increasing the price of the substances.
