BUT ONLY ONE THING IS NEEDED(LUKE 10:41-42).
Many times we are worried by life and its daily challenges, we spend much time thinking of our problems rather than thinking of our Creator. Today Jesus went to visit Mary, Martha and Lazarus who were very dear friends to him. He did not go alone but went along with his Apostles and well wishers, the home was relatively spacious hence it accommodated many people that went with Jesus and as tradition demands you do not let a guest stay hungry. While at the table Jesus was not only chatting with them but he was teaching them the word, he was telling them about the word of God with many people asking questions to satisfy their curiosity and increase their zeal to know God and this great prophet in their midst, some were trying to enjoy fellowshipping with Jesus at the table. Martha had to call some of the neighbours to assist her in preparing meal for this large crowd and most especially to ensure that Jesus had a remarkable stay in their house, suddenly she came out expecting that her sister Mary join her to serve the lord rather she saw her sitting at his feet and she said "But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!"
Jesus was very happy with what she said and he decided to use that as a medium to extend his teaching to her, hence he replied with a gentle voice that a teacher will tell an erring scholar "Jesus answered, and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful, and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part shall not be taken away from her."
The important question that troubles the mind of the believer is "What is that one thing that is needful to the believer?" To get the answer of that one thing that is needful to the believer we find the answer in Deuteronomy 5:6 "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery." The Egypt God is referring today is our old life of sin and condemnation that is dictated by the law, hence "For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ"(John 1:16). Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit when he said "But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light" (1 Peter 2:9). Also in Deuteronomy 6:5, the Holy Spirit instructed Moses to tell the people that " And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. " This is seen as the most important command because if we love God we will shun away vices. Even while Jesus walked on the surface of the earth, teaching and proclaiming the good news, an expert in the law decided to ask him the greatest command and , " Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’
This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” ( Matthew 22:35-40).
Therefore the only thing that is needful is that the creation must continue to praise, worship and listen to the word of the Creator because the primary aim of our creation is to worship God alone. Have a nice day ahead, may God bless his word in our hearts. Amen
