The National Universities Commission (NUC) yesterday said that only 30 per cent of the 1.7 million candidates (representing 510,000) who sat for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) would be admitted into tertiary institutions this year. The implication is that 70 per cent of the applicants representing 190,000 candidates won’t be able to secure admission in varsities, polytechnics and other tertiary institutions this year NUC Executive Secretary, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, made this known in Abuja during a one-day public hearing organised by the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund on the regulatory conflict between the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and universities in offering admission in the country According to him, this was due to the limited spaces in tertiary institutions that had made admission crisis inevitable. “The crisis of admission in this country is inevitable unless we expand spaces we shall continue to have admission crisis in the country.

“80 per cent of candidates at the point of sitting do not have the O’ Level at all. They are awaiting results. So, when we are building our theories and analysis, we need to be very cautious. “If you score 400 over 400 if you do not have the five O’ Level papers, you cannot come into the university. The basic qualification is the five O’ Level papers,” he said.

This one is ridiculous... It's better the education commission find lasting solutions to it.. Cause letting these people stay home this year will still affect next year's process.. Then when will admission process in Nigeria ever be easy

The teaming population of admission seekers will reduce if institutions are willing to give candidates options to study closely related courses if the intended could not be achieved
