Re: Need Help On The Type Of Mobile Oil To Use On My Avalon 2002 by nurey(m): 7:47am On Oct 27, 2017
The engine oil recommended for your car is 5w30, you should change atleast every 5000km or atmost 8000km if you utilize full synthetic branded oil. You also change the filter with quality one.

The recommended ATF on your car dip stick would read dextrose II OR III because of the engine but you should buy Toyota type T-IV instead as the quality of dextron 2 and 3 in the market now is questionable and they were discontinued long time ago.

You change ATF every 30,000km or let's put it at 2years.

Summary
Engine oil 5-8k km or 6months which ever comes first

ATF 30k km or 2years which ever comes first.

5w30 is a Mobil 1 that should be used for at least 10,000km or 1year. Mobil XHP that dey sell 4,500 is okay for that car. 20w50

Don't follow oil manufacturers recommendations but vehicle manufacturers.

I am sure Toyota will never tell you to run that Avalon even when brand new to 10k km on any oil, not to talk of a 15years old engine that has garnered wear and tear. 20w50 oil is a no no if you still want your engine to run 10years in Nigeria.

Seems you are comfortable with mobil oil, GAZZUZZ stocks the imported 5w30 of mobil, buy from him but don't use it to 10k km on your engine oooo.

If you started with full synthetic engine oil (5w-20/5w30/0w-40/15w30 etc...) stick with it, but if you ave straYed from the manufacturer path and you are using 20w50, dont come back, engine will burn oil. Stick with your 20w50, just get a good brand and use responsible oil change intervals to avoid problems.

there is no harm in trying out 5w30 even wen u have used the wrong oil ,it might still work for your car .I have lot customer that their car still work fine with 5w30 after years of abuse with wrong oil .

keep on using the 20w50, dont bother to change to 5w30 if you dont want yah engine to knock without notice. The difference is while the guy using recommended with all things been equal will have his engine still steaming after 10years, even if yours make s it to then, it will already be smoking and showing signs of worn out internal engine components

The oil 'question' still remains...

2008 RAV4 (Auto Transmission): Used 20w 50 motor oil (20w 50 oil is one of the oils recommended in the owners manual that came with the car) every 5000km since the vehicle was bought in 2008. No engine problems whatsoever in 9 years except for a leaking valve cover seal, replaced in 2016. After going through what's been said in so many auto forums over the years, I switched to 5w 30 (expensive angry) this year. Still no problems so far. No smoking and oil consumption has remained unchanged - no oil needed between services.

Have done two transmission drain & refills in 8 years, with the most recent being 2 months ago. No major transmission issues except a stiffness (which comes and goes) and which we have learned to live with.

2012 Camry A/T): Also used 20w 50 motor oil since the vehicle was bought in 2012. Again no engine problems whatsoever till I switched to 5w 30 this year. And still no problems so far. (And again, 20w 50 is recommended in the owners manual that came with the car). Have never done a transmission drain & refill. No transmission problems so far.

Fuel economy is definitely much better in both vehicles with the 5w 30 motor oil - i guess that offsets part of the high cost of the motor oil. The big question is this: why does Toyota recommend 20w 50 oil if (according to so many people) its no good?

Let me know when and where would be convenient for you to take a look. Or I could scan the front page of the manuals and the page listing recommended oils and send to you via email.

Why not post it here so we could all learn.

Did you read the manual at all, they said sae 5w20 is recommended. They didn't say you can't use other ones, but the caveat emptor is there.

Even on your engine oil cover, what you will still see is 5w20.

But you can use what ever you like, my Nissan Almera manual also says 15k km or 9k miles to use an oil before changing it, I just laughed.

If you are using 20w50 for an engine with timing belt, you may not feel the repercussions but if it's timing chain, you go hear am

For a tokunbo, I would advice 5w30, for Nigerian used, if 5w30 cause smoking and shortening of oil, please switch back to 20w50.

My sienna with over 300k km still steams because I have been using 5w40 from onset. I run it to 8k km or 6months and my dipstick is always golden brown, no smoke no oil shortening.

GAZZUZZ avensis has 300k km too and he uses full synthetic too.

have you been using 20w50 with API certification? wink
Re: Need Help On The Type Of Mobile Oil To Use On My Avalon 2002 by mayor2013: 6:50pm On Oct 31, 2017
My conclusion on this is the viscosity of the oil is engine specific. Different write ups here and there.Have seen a Camry 2008 owners manual state you can use 20w50 but there was a clause to the usage of 20w50.

My own recommendation would be if your engine uses timing belt you can use 20w50. If yours uses a timing chain you are on your own shocked

whats this crap about timing chain and belt? Cars from the 1970s use timing chain, and recommended engine oil for them was 20w50 cheesy

There was never a crap about it . My opinion though. Not to forget design of the 1970s are not same with contemporary ones . You missed that part sir
