Menstruation occurs when the uterus (womb) sheds its inner lining once a month. This come out as waste blood through a small opening in the cervix and to the external through the vaginal canal.

Causes of menstrual pain

There are no identifiable cause of painful menstrual periods. A hormone called prostaglandin triggers muscle contractions in the uterus that expel the lining. These contractions can result in pain and inflammation. The level of prostaglandin always rises right before menstruation begins so as to expel wall lining.
