Hello trustyshoess, remember I once said your write up was spot on? It still is.

I am just trying to figure out why feminism/feminists and feminist advocates have such a bad rep (meaning with the male populace). I will give you an example: the Urban Dictionary defines feminists and I quote:

CASE 1 -Feminists believe in equal rights between men and women, but if they had their way all men would be living in summers eating whatever shit flows our way while all women live in the lap of luxury. They also take chivalry as a personally insult, believe all domestic violence cases involve a man hurting a woman and want every think to be politically correct/in no way manly/pro-feminism.(cured beef instead of beef jerky, lunberperson instead of lumberjack, goddesses instead of women

CASE 2 - A person who claims to want "equal rights" for women, but actually just wants the law to favor women.

CASE 3 - A Feminist can be defined as a woman who is too functionally retarded(slow) to understand the the basic roles which have been biologically programmed into every mammal over the course of billions of years of evolutionary perfection. According to Feminists, nature is sexist and discriminatory towards women because evolution has given them the role of a nurturer instead of a provider(such as men). The most common cause of feminism is the lack of a strong father figure while growing up, which then leads to confusion in terms of their gender orientated roles(ie. father didn't directly provide for the child because mommy left him). Another cause for Feminism is social pressure, as Feminism has become the norm in most of North America and Europe. Due to this peer pressure, women who grew up in strong, healthy families are shunned by those who have grown up in broken families, until they too behave in such a manner (Misandric).

CASE 4 - An ugly and/or emotionally inept woman who feels that the problems in her life are caused by her gender rather than her own incompetence and sloth.

Rather than bettering a woman's situation in the world, they'd much rather try to drag men down to their level of filth/incompetence.
I believe all men should be castrated to prevent rape, such is one of the fundamental basics of being a modern feminist!

The tirade is quite long and I wouldn't want to bore you with the details.

So here goes my question: why does the movement have such a bad rep (eventhough I know its a misconception)?

I believe one of the main reasons is that people don't know that there are different types of feminism (i.e liberal, radical, socialis, cultural etc). When they see the view of a radical feminist, they think that all feminists have the same view. They also don't realise that both women AND men can be feminists (they get so shocked by that).

Also, another problem is just what I like to call "bandwagon mentality". A lot of people who have bad things to say about feminism and feminists don't even understand what it's about; they haven't taken their time to do research or study it. I was once in this group of people, swearing up and down that feminists hate men, I could never be one, feminists are this and that, satanic agenda, and all sorts of nonsense, not because I found beyond reasonable doubt that I was right but because a lot of people said so (jumped to conclusions/ into the bandwagon). It was when I took sociology as one of my A level courses, that I had the chance to study feminism and truly understand what it's about, gender equality, full stop. I really had to ask myself, why do I hate feminism so much? What makes it so bad? I didnt have good enough answers

Lastly, feminism gets such a bad rep because the world is full of misogynists (men and women) who will swear with their lives that men and women are absolutely different and therefore shouldn't have equal rights and opportunities. A lot of these people have grown up around a patriarchal society and therefore have internalized these norms and values and have come to see them as true, refusing to break free from the paradigm.

There are feminists in Nigeria, just not a lot it seems. Most likely due to to the inherent backlash they don't show themselves a lot.
As for how many independent women we have, quite frankly I don't know but I do believe that women should all be working towards being independent. If we don't have many, it's because society has taught women to be dependent on men. This needs to be reversed

So I think that the kind of feminism that people think of when they hear Feminism is Radical Feminism-: Radical feminism is a movement that believes sexism is so deeply rooted in society that the only cure is to eliminate the concept of gender completely or for females to dominate.

Now that's not the kind of feminism I'm talking about. Another type of Feminism is Liberal Feminism. Liberal feminists strive towards gender equality in all areas of life. Gender equality includes men too!

So why am I a feminist? Or why do I believe in gender equality? No, it's not because I believe that men and women are equal or because I'm against submissiveness or because I want female world domination (although that would be pretty cool)
I believe in gender equality for the same reason I believe in racial equality, tribal equality and anything that has to do with fairness in general.

Of course men and women are not equal, physicality being the main difference but they're both humans and both deserve to be treated equally as a result.

Believe me there's soo much more to say, but I don't want to make this too long. Feel free to ask questions, let's see if I can get you to see why feminism isn't all that bad

Nothing justifies domestic violence but the phrase "throwing the first punch" is relative. If a Lady accosts a man verbally, she can be said to have "thrown the first punch" because it doesn't matter if it's physical or verbal. A verbal attack can also cause as much harm as a physical one, if not more. Psychological wounds are deadly and its effects on a person cannot be stressed.

So, I beg to disagree.
