Education; Future Implications Of Examination Malpractice by marvinscott: 12:40pm On Nov 18, 2017
As evaluative examinations approach in secondary schools around the nation the National Anticorruption Volunteer Corps(NAVC) of the National youth service corps(NYSC) Scheme,Odeda local government arm perform their community development role by taking the responsibility of educating the pupils of Stephen centre group of schools gbonagun, odo eran, Abeokuta, staging a sensitization program tagged; Future implication of examination malpractice considering a student predisposition on the 16th November 2017, a program that spanned an hour. It was a breathtaking and educative event as the program started with the observations of the national anthem, followed by the NYSC anthem and the harmonious anthem of Stephen centre group of schools.
Corps member Taiwo Olayinka moses premised his talk on Cognitive test anxiety which is “composed of individuals' cognitive reactions to evaluative situations, or internal dialogue regarding evaluative situations, in the times prior to, during, and after evaluative tasks
The thoughts of individuals dealing with high levels of cognitive test anxiety are mostly (a) comparing self-performance to peers, (b) considering the consequences of failure, (c) low levels of confidence in performance, (d) excessive worry over evaluation, (e) causing sorrow for their parents, (f) feeling unprepared for tests, and (g) loss of self-worth, as contributors to the conceptualization of examination malpractice. He also articulated on resultant effect of malpractice stating clear cut differences between competence and incompetence. He further challenged the students to strive to be solution providers and contribute positively to the society by getting interested in their studies. Using Thomas Edison achievement story, he implored the students to strive in achieving academic excellence by literally "lighting their own bulbs" by proper preparation for exams.
Corps member Micheal gave solutions against examination malpractice laying emphasis on the following;
Development of Interest
Deligence
Maintaining a study discipline
Write and rewrite
He also emphatically talked on the benefits of avoiding examination malpractice which includes;
Development of self confidence
Self satisfaction
Gives positive influence on others
Respect
Helps you make the right friends.
He concluded his charge, speaking on interest and strength in making a career choice, using his personal story,as his change of career path from sciences to literature and art was as a result of his strength in art courses and not incompetence. Examination malpractice is an issue of concern in our education system an it's high time government bodies support movements like this in bid to preach sanity into the system and make competent graduates who would create solutions to the problems in various sectors rather than mediocre that would increase our woes year after year. Though several penalties have been created against examination malpractice but this act still remains a perennial problem in our secondary and tertiary institutions, this initiative is borne out of the need identified by the National anticorruption volunteer group to directly engage the younger generation whom are the major subjects of this act. We therefore deem it fit to correct the abnormality in the system by discussing the future implications with these ones for effectiveness. We appreciate the Stephen centre group of schools for accepting our initiative and more of this would be done in several secondary schools before their examinations start proper. Thank you.
