[size=14pt]Osun: 41-year-old woman remanded for theft of a three-day-old baby[/size]

An Ile-Ife Magistrate's Court has remanded a 41-year-old woman, Folashade Sanda, in police custody for allegedly stealing a three-day-old baby.

The police had arraigned the accused person on a four-count charge and claimed that Sanda and one other suspect (now at large) conspired to steal the baby on July 24, 2009 between 6am and 6pm at Hezekiah Oluwasanmi Road 7 in Ile-Ife.

But the lawyer to the accused, Mr. A. Ayinde, pleaded with the court to grant his client bail on the ground that she was indisposed.

The police prosecutor, Mrs. O. Funmi, however, urged the court not to grant bail to the suspect because the alleged offence was criminal.

The prosecuting lawyer, Mr. Gboyega Amusan, also informed the court that the teenage mother of the baby was abducted when she was pregnant, adding that the victim was later abandoned after she gave birth and her baby taken away from her.

In his ruling, the Magistrate, Mr. A. Awe, refused the application for bail and held that the offence was grievous.

According to the police, the offence is contrary to Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code of Osun State.

The case has been adjourned till April 22.
