*Who is a Physiotherapist* I am a physiotherapist not a masseur. This is my seventh year in training (Internship and NYSC included). There are a thousand and one things a physiotherapist can do other than massage. Today is world physiotherapy day so I have decided to educate everyone a little about the profession. Patiently read through. Physical therapy or Physiotherapy (PT) is a distinct medical profession in health care system. Even though under the regulatory body of *MRTB* but is far beyond just Rehabilitation or Exercises as its scopes covers: *Preventive *Diagnostic *Curative *Prehab *Rehabilitative & (Re) integration aspects etc In other words, they can manage their own patient from admission till discharge or Co-manage with other medical professionals in team work as need be. *Who is a Physiotherapist? They are Doctors for *Forms* and *Functions*, they add Values to people's life. In simple terms each part of your physical body has a supposed form and functions and any affectation of the form will definitely affect the functions. Therefore, PT are specialist in those supposed forms and function of the body.. In being physically active, fitness, good Health, general mobility and functions. Above all they are also pain specialists when it concerns Muscoloskeletal Structures which includes *Bone *Muscles *Tendon *Ligaments *Neural and other Soft and hard connective tissues *Specialties under Physiotherapy.. *Neurophysiotherapy *Orthopedic physiotherapy *Cardiopulmonary physio *Pediatrics physiotherapy *Sports physiotherapy *Palliative care *O & G physiotherapy etc And each of this specialties have Subspecialties under them. In the field of Physiotherapy, we employ various techniques for managing patients. These include: *Electrotherapy* *Sonotherapy* *Heat therapy* *Cryotherapy* *Manual therapy* *Exercise therapy* *Suspension therapy* *Manipulative therapy* *Psychotherapy* *Arthocare and Analgesics* *Tropical Analgesic gels etc* *Who needs a Physiotherapist* Every human being needs the help of a physical therapist either to add life to their years or years to their lives.. and most importantly To add Values to their lives. 98% of the population visit hospital because of pain related issues . Either for: Physical or Internal pain Emotional or Psychological pain in relation to the underlying cause. A *Physiotherapist* is actively involved in any condition of a patients that involves but not limited to the following: *deformities and dysfunctions *Physical, Emotional or Psychological pains *Connective tissue(Bone, muscle, ligaments Tendons..) *Neural supplies and * General or partly body weaknesses. Some of the conditions can be pre or post surgical. Few to mention.. Stroke Burns Fracture Dislocation Subluxation Tendinitis Bursitis Facial palsy Paresis Plegia Cerebral palsy Joint stiffness Injection palsy Erbs palsy Rheumatoid arthritis Pes planus/ flatfoot Club foot Osteoarthritis Pott's dix/ TB spine Spinal cord injury Incontinence Prolapses Compressive myelopathy Pressure sores Carpal tunnel syndrome Central cord syndrome Down syndrome Muscular dystrophy Joints dysfunctions Depression Angina Respiratory distress TORTICOLLIS Scoliosis Parkinson dix Post meningitis GBS Cancer related cases Ataxia or other deformities, mobility, balance and Coordination issues. And so on in thousands A physically dependent healthy person is still sick.. A good Health definition can never be complete in presence of pain and much physical dependence even of problems that can be fixed. Meet a Physiotherapist today and add value to your life.
