Ali Abdullah Saleh, a former president of Yemen has been killed by Houthi rebels near the capital, Sanaa.

The death was confirmed by Saleh’s political party, the General People’s Congress (GPC).

“He was martyred in the defence of the republic,” said Faiqa al-Sayyid, a leader in the General People’s Congress, blaming Huthi rebels for Saleh’s killing south of the capital Sanaa.

According to Al-Jazeera, Saleh was killed by the rebels in a rocket-propelled grenade and shooting attack on his car at a checkpoint outside Sanaa.

Yasser al-Awadi, the GPC’s assistant secretary-general, was also killed.

In a statement read out on a Houthi television network, the interior ministry announced the “killing” of “Saleh and his supporters”.

“This is after he and his men blockaded the roads and killed civilians in a clear collaboration with the enemy countries of the coalition.

“Its forces had taken over all the positions and strongholds of the treacherous militia in the capital, Sanna, and the surrounding areas, as well as other provinces in order to impose security”.

The guy should have remained in exile where he was after his nominal resignation in 2012 instead of coming back to die like a bloody street dog. Why are politicians always so ready to throw their lives away for power? Now,look at this. Almost 40 years in power yet he wanted more. Instead,he got this.

THIS is NOT about the "westerners",lady. First of all,you need to understand what the situation really is in Yemen before making any comment. This is way more complicated than you can imagine. I wouldn't say the former president(of Yemen) was anti-west or anti-US per say. Infact,as president of Yemen,Saleh enjoyed what I would call a robust relationship with the US and the west to a great extent. Infact,he was more open to the US than many of his contemporaries[Sadam,Gaddhafi and the likes] and as a result defence and economic assistance flowed in from the US. Infact, some of Yemen's troops were trained by the US,arms are purchased from the US,the biggest airforce base in Yemen belongs to the US. So,his regime was a "friendly" one to the West.

Saleh's case was a case of a major political schemer who ended scheming himself to his grave. Let me take you back to 2011/12: Protests began in Yemen against his government. The protests were part of the whole Arab spring movement. The protesters were tired of Salehs sit-tightism and corruption. The protests soon metamophorsed into a revolution and Saleh was lucky to escape with his life. He was almost killed by the same guys who finally ended up killing him. An RPG attack on his palace mosque left 40% of his body burnt. Even at that the guy refused to step down until neighbouring countries such as Arabia & other members of the GCC prevailed on him to step down in 2012 after it was agreed that he wasn't going to be prosecuted for any of his crimes.

He was then allowed to go into exile in peace and he remained there for a while before his insatiable greed for power forced him to return to Yemen to try and wrest power from the new government and to do that,he allied himself with an Iranian-backed Shia group called the Houthis. Now,these Houthis were the guys who were partly responsible for the revolution that removed him from power in 2012[imagine making friends with your enemies simply because you want to settle a score with someone]. That alliance with the Houthis did not last long enough because Saleh,in his usual nature, tried to dump and betray the Houthis and THAT is what has led to his death. Just look at how he died.

So,what you said about the "westerners" isn't entirely correct. The group that killed Saleh has zero links with the "west" unlike the guys who killed Gaddhafi. The Houthis are backed by Tehran(Iran). They are Zaidi Shias so,you should understand. Hope this epistle helps you.
