Nigeria To Ban Rice Importation This Year – Buhari by Blue3k2: 9:14am On Jan 01, 2018
President Muhammadu Buhari has pledged that his administration will ban rice import in 2018.

The president said this in his New Year broadcast on Monday.

He said, “We have got to get used to discipline and direction in economic management. The days of business as usual are numbered.

“Two years ago I appealed to people to go back to the land. I am highly gratified that agriculture has picked up, contributing to the government’s effort to re-structure the economy.

“Rice imports will stop this year. Local rice, fresher and more nutritious will be on our dishes from now on.

“By the same token, I am today appealing to enterprising Nigerians with ideas and unemployed graduates and other able-bodied and literate men and women with ideas not to just sit and wait for employment from the government or the Organized Private Sector.

“Great nations are built by enterprising people who turn their hands to anything that circumstances dictate.”

you wan ban rice importation when our local farmers never get enough rice to meet demand, which will only lead to one thing, making rice more expensive and unaffordable for people like me. When dis man go get sense?

No it didn't. Rice importation is actually set to rise this year. Production grew but it certainly no where close to consumption. Thai Rice imports dropped last year.

Data obtained by PREMIUM TIMES however indicate that Nigeria imported 2.330 million metric tons of rice in 2015 and 2016.

The data provided by the global Agricultural Market Information System, AMIS further indicate that Nigeria’s rice importation reduced to 2.310 million metric tons within the period of 2016 to 2017.

According to the data, Nigeria’s domestic supply of rice stood at 3.850 million metric tons in 2015 to 2016, while the figure reduced to 3.620 million metric tons within the period of 2016 to 2017.

The data also indicated that Nigeria’s domestic consumption of rice, stood at 5.530 million metric tons of rice between 2015 and 2017.

The data provided by AMIS also forecast Nigeria’s rice importation, as expected in 2018 adding that it would rise from 2.310 million metric tons in 2017, to 2.830 million metric tons in 2018.

Wrong: People no longer import rice because is not profitable doing so...

When you factor the tariffs and other costs the landing cost is way off.

It's silly because premium times debunked it that claim. Second Nigeria's rice import didn't drop by 95% and the country will continue importing. 3rd ogbeh is the same clown that said Nigeria would be self sufficient in rice November 2017. That guy is not good for anything but a laugh.

It's funny how people made simple policy discussion about SE. I guess Lagos ports don't receive rice imports the way you talk. Last time I checked only land borders were closed to rice. It's going to be interesting year if buhari actually goes through with this policy.

Save your lies and propaganda for your fellow BMC bubu worshipers.
What are the PRECISE policy initiatives by barawo bubu for the increased local production of rice apart from following the laudable steps by Jonathan and Adesina who was recognised with appointment as ADB President and World Food Prize

specter:
Dr. Akinwumi Ayodeji Adesina, the President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), will be recognized as the 2017 World Food Prize Laureate. Through his roles over the past two decades with the Rockefeller Foundation, at the newly established Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), and as Minister of Agriculture of Nigeria, Dr. Adesina has been at the forefront of galvanizing political will to transform African agriculture through initiatives to: expand agricultural production, thwart corruption in the Nigerian fertilizer industry, and exponentially increase the availability of credit for smallholder farmers across the African continent.

Previous Govts Initiated ‘Most Of The Things This Administration Is Doing’ – Adesina

A majority of the projects the Muhammadu Buhari administration is working on was inherited from previous administrations, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity has said.

Mr Femi Adesina said this when he appeared on Channels Television’s special Independence anniversary programme on Sunday.

“Most of the things this administration is doing – 60 to 70 percent of them – were initiated by previous governments,” he said.

“That shows you that in the past a government will come and say ‘this is not our project’ And it will discard what was being done and start fresh ones.”

As a result, Mr Adesina said there are many half and quarter-completed abandoned projects.
But rather than abandon the project, he explained that the current administration will complete it.

An example is the Abuja-Kaduna rail project which the Presidential aide said was up to maybe 60 to 70 percent complete when the last administration left.

“This administration came, completed it and inaugurated it. Then you will still find some people shouting, ‘they are claiming credit for what the past administration started,” he said.

“It shows there is a mentality in Nigeria that makes governments not want to complete what previous governments have started. But this administration is not going that way at all, it is just doing what needs to be done for the good of the country.”

Abi oh.
Something that was banned by Jonathan as part of his excellent agricultural policy, which bubu reversed in 2015 to favour his Fulani importers.

agora4now:
The comptroller-general of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali (rtd), has ordered the immediate removal of rice from import restriction list and the re-introduction of import duty payment at land borders.

The public relations officer of Customs, Mr Wale Adeniyi, who made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja, said that the restriction was only applied at land border stations before now, adding that the customs boss had lifted restriction on rice at border stations.

He said that all rice imports through land borders by rice traders would attract the prevailing import duty of 10 percent, with 60 percent levy. Rice millers (preferential levy) with valid quota allocation would also attract duty rate of 10 percent with 20 percent levy on rice importation.

“Over the years, importation has been restricted to the seaports because border authorities have found it difficult to effectively monitor and control importation of rice.

“When the decision to ban it (rice) was taken, it was not an effective measure because the smuggling of the product thrives with people using different means of conveyance, including small trucks, bicycles and even animals – putting them on donkeys and some actually carry it on their heads.

“These new measures will be for Customs to recognise their anti-smuggling operations in the border areas and ensure that all those importers through the borders bring their rice through approved routes and pay their extant duty

“Before the ban on rice importation, Customs had placed different rates of levy on rice imports – 30 percent levy was placed on rice millers (preferential levy) and 70 per cent for rice importers. The purpose was to encourage local production.
