The Nigerian military has debunked the news circulating about the death of Mr. Igwedibia Johnson, a.ka “Don Wani”, a notorious militant, cultist, kidnapper and  oil bunkerer in Rivers state.

The militant who has been terrorising the people of  Omoku was earlier reported to have died in a gun battle with a joint force of  Nigerian security on Saturday.

However, the Deputy Director Army Public Relations of the 6 division of the Nigerian Army, Colonel Aminu Ilyasu  said the wanted man is still very much alive.

Although the security forces arrested some of the gang members, with many others escaping with gun shot wounds, the kingpin, was not at the location during the cross fire.

Iliyasu said efforts are being made  to track, arrest and bring him to justice.

“After about an hour of gun fight, the gallant troops overpowered the criminal elements. Some of them scampered in disarray and are believed to have escaped with gunshot wounds through River Orashe in Omoku. The troops, however, arrested seven others including 2 ladies while they were trying to escape during the encounter”, Ilyasu said.

The military spokesperson said items recovered during the raid included 10 human skulls, various human bones, 2 AK-47 Rifles, 1 General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), 18 AK-47 Rifle Magazines, 4 pairs of military camouflage, 5 camouflage T-Shirts, 3 Fabrique Nationale (FN)  Rifle magazines, 39 rounds of 7.62mm (NATO) ammunition, 20 rounds of 9mm ammunition and 1 round of 7.62mm (Special) ammunition.

The wanted Don Wani was alleged to have  masterminded the cold blooded murder of 23 persons in Omoku, Rivers on  New Year’s Day.
