FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010 - Reporting From South Africa by 14(m): 5:35pm On Apr 10, 2010
Johannesburg - The official 2010 FIFA World Cup™ ticket was unveiled today (9 April 2010) by FIFA Secretary General Jérôme Valcke and Organising Committee CEO Danny Jordaan at Maponya Mall in Soweto.

The tickets will be made available to the general public in a week’s time, on 15 April 2010, when the fifth and final ticketing sales phase kicks off. This will coincide with the opening of the FIFA World Cup ticketing centres in all nine Host Cities and the start of the over-the-counter sales.

“For this last phase, we have made a big effort to assist football fans by introducing various additional means to purchase a ticket,” emphasised Jérôme Valcke. “We are commited to facilitating the process for all fans and giving them this last chance to attend the matches and experience the excitement of this first World Cup in Africa.”

In all, 500,000 tickets for 63 matches (including all Host Cities and all knock-out matches except the final) will be made available.

Five different sales channels will be operating during this fifth and final sales phase, which will run from next Thursday (15 April 2010) to the last day of the tournament (11 July 2010):

•         11 ticketing centres across the Host Cities (exact addresses and details can be found attached and on FIFA.com), open seven days a week from 9.00 until 18.00 local time;
•         Approx. 600 FNB branches nationwide, open five days a week from 9.00 on 15 April; the process is new: you can order tickets, make payment and get ticket confirmation immediately; the actual tickets need to be collected at the FIFA ticketing centres or Shoprite/Checkers sales points;
•         The official tournament website www.FIFA.com, starting from 18.00 on 15 April;
•         The call centre hotline (tel. (within South Africa): 083 123 2010; tel. (international): 0041445832010), starting from 18.00 on 15 April and open seven days a week from 8.00 until 22.00;
•         18 Shoprite/Checkers sales points (addresses attached and on FIFA.com), starting from 9.00 on 19 April and open seven days a week;

“We are excited about these new initiatives, which make the process much easier for everyone. We have always said that it is important that we make this World Cup more accessible to the people and with the over-the-counter sales, we believe this measure is consistent with the needs of the fans,” said Danny Jordaan.

Fans applying at the ticketing centres will be required to display ID and pay by credit card or cash.

A total of 240,000 tickets were sold in the fourth phase, 85% of which went to South African residents. Overall, 2.2 million tickets have been sold for the tournament.

Chaos erupts at SWC ticket points

Pretoria - Chaos erupted at sales offices on Thursday when people were able to queue for 2010 World Cup tickets for the first time.

Tempers flared in the afternoon at the ticket office in Pretoria's Brooklyn Mall when the police and security officials sprayed soccer fans with pepper spray.

"We had nowhere to go," said Albert Ferreira, a student at the University of Pretoria (UP), who was trapped at the front of the queue.

"People were falling over each other and women were sprayed in the face (with pepper spray). The officials followed the people who ran away for about 30m and sprayed them."

A friend of Ferreira's watched the chaos unfold from an escalator: "One official with a bulletproof vest, an automatic rifle and a 9mm pistol pepper-sprayed people all along the queue, as if it was Christmas."

A Portuguese-speaking man next to him was hit with the butt of a shotgun and also pepper-sprayed in the face, said Ferreira.

He wants to submit a complaint to the police about the way they were treated.

"And I won't watch the soccer."

Final phase

The fifth and last phase of ticket sales kicked off on Thursday, with half-a-million tickets being made available. Many people spent Wednesday night camped out in front of ticket offices.

Chaos also erupted when people starting pushed forward when the ticket office in Sandton opened at about 09:00.

Security guards had their hands full trying to keep the door shut. Saps officers and metro police were called in later.

Thousands of soccer fans in Pretoria also started pushing forward immediately when the doors of the ticket office in the Brooklyn Mall opened.

Two women who were pressed against the door fainted and had to be rescued by security guards. They were treated and taken to a local hospital.

Gordon Bolson, also a student at UP, was pressed up against the glass door for about an hour.

Then the police pulled him from his place at the front and forced him to the back of the queue in an attempt to reduce the pressure.

Sales slow

Furthermore, sales proceeded at a snail's pace, making the crowd even more impatient. People started screaming to be let in and banged on the glass doors.

Police reinforcements arrived between 09:30 and 10:00.

Police spokesperson Colette Weilbach said the police sent all available personnel to the ticket office.

"The police also called in the help of extra centre security and independent security companies, and emergency services were deployed."

André Wiese, commanding officer of the Brooklyn police station, said there were about 5 000 people and they used pepper spray as the absolute minimum force to protect people and property.

They called in the tactical response unit to prevent injuries, he said.

Errol Jacobs from Westbury said the ticket sales were handled incorrectly.

"I've been here since yesterday (Wednesday) at 20:00 - that's almost 24 hours. The security is a disaster. FIFA has let South Africa down with the ticket system."

Nicolas Maingot, FIFA's acting director of communications and public relations, said technical experts are working on improving the system.

"It's the first time and people may feel it's slow."

Muhammed Tar, 21, from Laudium, bought the first ten tickets - for the match between Brazil and Portugal - at the ticket office in Pretoria.

"Don't be jealous!" he yelled at the other people in the queue.

Kimberley’s 50 day carnival
(LOC) Wednesday 21 April 2010
There was a carnival atmosphere in the Northern Cape city of Kimberley today as the provincial capital celebrated the 50 day countdown to the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

With floats, dancers, a marching band and hundreds of city residents in tow, a procession snaked its way through the streets of Kimberley as more and more joined in, before eventually reaching the Galeshewe stadium, where the President of the Republic of South Africa arrived to be part of the celebrations.

President Zuma got into the spirit of the 50 day celebrations by learning the Diski Dance which many South Africans are adopting ahead of the World Cup.

It was a moment that Diski dancer, Duran van Wyk (20), would never forget as President Zuma came up to him while performing the dance in front of thousands of spectators at the day’s main event. Taking him through all the steps that make up the World Cup dance, van Wyk could hardly believe what was happening.

“It was like a dream, I never thought that something like this would ever happen. He is a quick learner though,” said van Wyk.

Once he had finished with the dance floor, President Zuma addressed the gathered crowd at the stadium.

“We have spoken about the year 2010 for so many years in this country that it became synonymous with football and celebrations. But somehow it just seemed to be taking too long to come, until now. It feels almost like a dream to say that today marks exactly 50 days to go before the kick-off of the spectacular 2010 FIFA World Cup tournament in this country”.

For Zuma, the ever-increasing support from South Africans for the World Cup effort is transforming the country.

“What is happening in the country at the moment is quite a marvel to watch. The nation is seized with exhilaration and great anticipation. The flags and the colours of the country are in display all over, in the cars and in our houses. Football Fridays have been so popularised that most wish they were a daily indulgence. “

“Taxi ranks, cafes, streets and literally every corner of the country becomes bright yellow on Fridays, a nation crazy about football and determined to make this tournament succeed beyond expectations. It is heartening to see how the entire nation is united in support of our national team. This harmony should define us and resonate in a wide range of spheres even outside sports,” said Zuma.

The Chief Executive Officer of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Organising Committee South Africa, Dr Danny Jordaan, praised the spirited reaction from the residents of Kimberley at today’s celebrations in a city that will not be hosting World Cup matches but will be hosting Uruguay at their selected base camp at the GWK stadium.

“You have proved that the World Cup is much more than the stadiums, more than the 64 matches and more than just the Host Cities. It is a celebration around South Africa. This is a national event and a true nation building moment”.

And it is the people of Kimberley themselves who can attest to this.

“I came here to see the celebrations. People in Kimberley are getting so excited – 2010 is here. Even though we are not hosting any games the 2010 spirit is here,” said James Wechoemang as he listened to the address by President Zuma.

Fifteen year old Jacob Oliphant is feeling the 2010 excitement.

“It is such a big party here today, the excitement is great but it a pity that we are not hosting any matches. But the people will follow the World Cup closely, everyone here loves soccer”.
