According to history, there was a referendum in 1961. A part of Northern Cameroon voted to join Nigeria (Some parts of Adamawa and Borno) while the mostly Christian South opted to join Cameroon. Unfortunately those who were merged with Cameroon are regretting today.

The French were the colonial masters in Cameroon while the British had portions of the territory known separately as Northern and Southern Cameroon. That's why they were given the option of merging with English speaking Nigeria.

Because they were the number one champions of ONE Nigeria then.
At that time it was the North that was truly reluctant for a United Nigeria followed by the west. They only agreed when regionalism was formulated.

The referendum they had was for Southern Cameroon to choose between union with Nigeria or Cameroon. It was not a referendum on Nigerian partition. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Cameroons

Not true, before independence the north is not ready for fast independence that is why it appear as if the Igbos are number one champions, the problem of Nigeria started immediately after independence.

Are you aware of Owolowo's attempt to include secession clause in the Constitution and resultant Zik's vehement opposition?
