Some Engine Oils Currently on the Shelves Can Harm Your Engine - Read the Lables!

There are engine oils currently on the shelves at auto parts stores, gas station convenience stores, food stores, and other retail outlets that can cause harm to your car’s engine. Yes, you heard correctly - Cause harm to your car’s engine. These are obsolete engine oils formulated for use in cars built prior to the 1930s! Know how to read the labels on the front and back of the bottles of oil you buy or you may be using product that can cause unsatisfactory performance or harm to your engine.

The service rating of passenger car and commercial automotive motor oils is classified by the American Petroleum Institute (API). The program certifies that engine oil meets certain Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) quality and performance standards. The service rating is shown in the API "Service Symbol Donut" on the product label. As shown in the illustration below, engine oils with an API SA Service Classification were formulated for use in cars built prior to 1930, and are now obsolete. Yet, there are still not hard to find in retail outlets. Read on about what you need to read on the labels.

API SERVICE CLASSIFICATION FOR PASSENGER CAR ENGINE OIL

Read the Labels!

SAE Viscosity Grade

The labels include important information to determine if an engine oil is appropriate for use in your vehicle. The first piece of information speaks to viscosity grade. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) defines a numerical system for grading motor oils according to viscosity. The suffixes (0, 5, 10, 15 and 25) followed by the letter W designate the engine oil's "winter" grade.

Look to your owner's manual. It specifies the viscosity grade required for your car's engine. Today, the most common grades are 5W-30.

API Service Categories

Whereas the labeling on the bottle of engine oil may suggest the product is a 5W-30, note, if there is no "W" between the 5 and the 30 it may not be a 5W-30. As an example, a 5-30 is not the same as an SAE 5W-30.

The next "code" to look for is the API Service Classification. Although it might appear complicated to understand at the start, it is really a simple system to get your arms around. Think of it this way, when cars were first built, the oil they required needed an API SA Service Classification. From there, it moved to SB, SC, SD, and so on (skipping only SI and SK).

So if you buy an engine oil meeting only API SA, it's an engine oil formulated for use in vehicles built in the 1920s. And SA is not hard to find mixed in with SM on the shelves at c-stores and others. Furthermore, it's also not hard to find SF, SJ and other API Service Categories on the shelves. Also, don't let price guide you. Engine oils with a Service Classification prior to SN (including SA) are often priced close to that of API SN.

OEM Specific Performance Specifications

Although the majority of vehicles currently on the road in the US specific the use of motor oils meeting a specific API Service Category, some vehicle manufacturers require use of lubricants that meet the original equipment manufacturer's (OEM) specifications. General Motor’s dexos is one example. Click for more about the dexos specification. Always check the labels on the motor oils purchased to assure they include any OEM specifications required in your vehicle.

Read the labels on the oils you buy, ask questions when you have your oil changed and read your car owner's manual.

Always consult your vehicle owner's manual to determine what motor oil you should use, and READ THE LABELS ON THE OIL YOU BUY.

Thanks for the feedback, and as well enlightenment.

I learn from your write up, not minding your harsh word.

Pardon the harsh words, very sorry about that but if it is all sahara group can bring out in 2018, it is disappointing. Mobil 1 has been upgraded to advanced full synthetic, Oando has upgraded to 5w30 and Total classic is now 20w50 and then the up and trendy Sahara group with their beautiful cng driven cars is introducing oils that destroys engines. Haba.!!!

No thing do you bros.

But come to think of it, your write up is basically suited or tailored to probably European and American cars and not sub-saharan Africa, due to weather different from both region.

For example it states the most common grades are SAE 5W/30 and 10w/30. This is not really feasible for Nigerian weather. The SAE is simply the viscosity index, meaning if an oil is 5W/30, it will flow at a temperature as low as 5 degrees and temperature as high as 30 degrees. For the Nigerian weather we do not have such low temperatures and in places like the North, temperatures may go as high as 40 degrees, that is why grades such as SAE 40, 50 are more common.

We used to think like that until I used Oando SM 20w50 on my Range Rover Sport and it took me one week to get to Abuja from Lagos that even Oando had to ask me why should I use that oil? Then someone used cepsa 20w50 on his Range Rover Sport and the plugs were soaked with oil. People using 20w50 on their corollas and the engines going haywire. It is a good oil for our weather but not suitable for modern engines. 90% of the cars in Nigeria are US specs and the oil that they recommend for their vehicles is what the oil marketing companies should strive to produce and not oil for Peugeot 505 in 2018

Here we go with the weather and climate comparison tripe. These engines and oils undergo testing in a wide variety of scenarios. A quick Google search will show you that several places in the USA, for a start, get much hotter than tons of places in Nigeria and much of the subcontinent. Phoenix, AZ and Las Vegas, NV come to mind easily.

Oh, and we don't have places in Nigeria with 5 degrees weather? It's unfortunate that we're not great at record keeping, so finding empirical data is proving tricky. However, having had an extended stay in the Shere Hills area of Plateau, I can guarantee that December and January mornings there have easily gone into single digit weather.

I think it's time we moved onto a new debate point, past this worn and rather baseless weather comparison.

As a footnote, please stick to your recommended Engine Oil grades. Do not let yourself be cajoled into using anything besides the recommended because it's 'suitable for our weather'.

Well, unless you drive a bobsled manufactured in Antarctica and strictly designed for arctic use. In which case you can have a field day with castor oil and 20w50 to oil those tricky joints.

That is why I am surprised that sahara group will produce sae 50 oil in 2018 or even want to compete with 20w50 when others are looking for a way to convert all those oils to synthetic. The cepsa 20w50 from dubai is even Api SN and MRS has an API SM 20w50 but Sahara!!!!!

Just going through the Op post and I discovered that Sahara group are also selling dexron III d. Haba, seahorse competitors. Disgusting. All this in 2018. Op can you please google and show us what oil is dexron III d and if it is available too. Please close the thread as the oil is dangerous for public use
