After the birth of Photoshop, the whole universe believed that nothing greater could ever beat this discovery. With a very good app, you could spend your vacation in Hawaii without leaving your bed at home, you could take a great selfie with Eminem without ever having a glimpse if the rap star, the possibility was endless or that was the presumption till the advent of the "Videoshop", Ai-generated videos.

It all came to light when a reddit user called Deepfakes spent a lot of time creating believably fake videos using machine-learning algorithms. Since then, the practice has taken off. The word "Videoshop" doesn't sound catchy at all, so online community immortalized the inventor by terming such videos "deepfakes". You can bet it wouldn't take long before the world accepts this as an English word.

Late last year, a redditor called Deepfakes gained notoriety for the extremely convincing face-swap porn videos he was making, in which the faces of mainstream Hollywood actors and rockstars were convincingly overlaid on the bodies of performers in pornography.
Deepfakes created his own subreddit dedicated to the practice and one of the habitues there created Fakeapp, an app that makes it significantly easier to create your own deepfakes.
Now, /r/deepfakes is filling up with convincing pornographic faceswaps of celebrities, and when they escape the confines of the subreddit, they get posted to tabloid sites as "genuine" sex-tapes.
The tool, meanwhile, is undergoing rapid development, making strides in usability and polish of its output, heralding a day, very soon, when we will see a lot of these fakes and struggle immensely to distinguish them from reality. They needn't be pornographic, of course -- you could faceswap Gandhi onto the aggressor in a beat-down, or Mike Pence onto Pride leather parade-float dancer.
According to deepfakeapp, anyone who can download and run FakeApp can create one of these videos with only one or two high-quality videos of the faces they want to fake. The subreddit’s wiki states that FakeApp is “a community-developed desktop app to run the deepfakes algorithm without installing Python, Tensorflow, etc.,” and that all one needs to run it is a “good GPU [graphics processing unit, the kind that high-end 3D video games require] with CUDA support [NVIDIA’s parallel computing platform and programming model].” If users don't have the proper GPU, they can also rent cloud GPUs through services like Google Cloud Platform. Running the entire process, from data extraction to frame-by-frame conversion of one face onto another, would take about eight to 12 hours if done correctly. Other people have reported spending much longer, sometimes with disastrous results.

While swapping someone’s face in a photograph has always been relatively easy, swapping someone’s face in a video used to be time consuming and difficult. Up until now, it’s mainly just been done by VFX studios for big budget Hollywood movies, where an actor’s face is swapped onto their stunt double. But now, with Deep Fake, anyone with a computer can do it quickly and automatically.


The Deep Fake software works using machine learning. It’s first trained with a target face. Distorted images of the target are run through the algorithm and it learns how to correct them to resemble the unaltered target face. When the algorithm is then fed images of a different person, it assumes they’re distorted images of the target, and attempts to correct them. To get video, the Deep Fake software operates on every frame individually.


The reason that Deep Fakes have largely just involved actors is that there is a lot of footage of them available from different angles which makes training more effective (Nicolas Cage has 91 acting credits on IMDB). However, given the amount photos and video people post online and that you really only need about 500 images to train the algorithm, there’s no reason ordinary people can’t be targeted too, although probably with a little less success.

Right now, Deep Fakes are pretty easy to spot but it will get harder as the technology gets better.
