Analysis Of Flying Eagles 20 Man List For Guinea-Bissau Tie + List In Full

Many Nigerians are not conversant with the present crop of players of the U20 team of Nigeria who are expected to be in Guinea-Bissau tomorrow for their Saturday African Youth Championship Qualifiers first leg clash.

Coach Paul Aigbogun released a list of 20 players carefully selected after almost over two months of camping in Abuja, which also saw them play friendly games against selected teams and twice against their Egyptian counterparts.

The list is made up of two goalkeepers , six defenders , four midfielders and eight forwards.

Flying Eagles squad to Guinea Bissau:

Goalkeepers: Akpan Udoh, Detan Ogundare

Defenders: Mike Zaruma, Valentine Ozornwafor, Ikouwem Udoh, Solomon Onome, Ekene Olisema, Abubakar Abdullahi Ali

Midfielders: Aminu Nuhu, Alhassan Ibrahim, Jamil Muhammed, Ali Isah

Forwards: Jerome Akor, Babawo Ibrahim, Idris Guda, Peter Eneji, Adeshina Gata, Asuquo Aniekeme, Wasiu Alalade, Effiom Maxwell.

Owngoalnigeria.com's Ade Emmanuel takes a look at the key players to keep an eye on when they take on Guinea-Bissau on Saturday.

Star Man : Peter Eneji

The Plateau United winger is by far the most known player in the 20 man squad and he has so far justified his high ratings with some near faultless display in the friendly games he has played for the team.

Injuries have limited his appearance in some high profile friendly games but his impact in the squad when he plays means he will be very pivotal in their quest to pick a good result on Saturday.

Joker : Alhaji Idris Guda
Quick, clever and with an eye for a goal. He has the ability to make something happen out of nothing as shown in the manner which he took his brace against Nasarawa United in one of their friendly game.
The Wikki Tourists ace is criminally underrated but if the Flying Eagles are in need of an unlikely hero, Guda is most likely the man to bail them out when all fails against Guinea Bissau on
Saturday.

Top Man : Jerome Akor

A gate crasher who has emerged as the focal point of the team in attack, thanks to his near perfect record of scoring a goal in almost all of their friendly games since he joined the team.

Big, strong and skilful. The Jamba FC of Kaduna teenager who had trial at Norwegian side Stroemgodset in January is highly favoured to start in attack on Saturday.

Top Talents : Alhassan Ibrahim, Zaruma, Babawo

The performance of the above mentioned trio have been truly exceptional in training and test games. Plateau United's Mike Zaruma who is a right back by trade scored a screamer from almost the half way line in one of their friendly games against Egypt.

Kano Pillars' Alhassan Ibrahim is the livewire of the team in midfield. He literally bring the team to life with his smart dribbling abilities, blind runs and clever passes. Many regard him as the best player in the Nigeria Professional Football League this season.

Niger Tornadoes of Minna winger Babawo Ibrahim has impressed with his raw pace and skills on the flanks, especially his abilities to take his marker out in tight spaces. He is expected to be a part of the attacking line up for the clash.

This boy has been going from one trial to the other for God knows over a year now.

He has hardly settled down in his parent club to play football.

Well, I wish him the best in his trials.

Bnei Sakhnin Nigeria U20 Goalkeeper Udoh Explains Why African Goalkeepers Struggle In Europe

Akpan Udoh is one name many Nigerians are familiar with following his exploits for the title winning Nigeria U17 team of 2015 and also a part of the squad of the 2016 U20 that failed to qualify for the African Youth Championship.
Udoh who is presently with the current U20 team who are expected to depart Nigeria tomorrow for Guinea-Bissau for the first leg of their African Youth Championship Qualifiers this weekend spoke with Owngoalnigeria.com on his career at club and national team level.

OGN – How Prepared Are The Flying Eagles For The Guinea-Bissau game?

Udoh – We are still preparing but so far, it’s been good all the way but as players we need to do more as the coaches are really doing their best in preparing us for this game.

OGN – How much do you know about Guinea-Bissau?

Udoh – Guinea is a good team but I don’t know much about Guinea-Bissau and I got to know Guinea because we played against them at U17 level. I have been doing a lot of research on the Guinea-Bissau team to know them before our game.

OGN – How has it been for you since moving to Europe?

Udoh – Believe me, I am very impress with my performance now than when I was in Nigeria. At Bnei Sakhnin they have helped build my confidence and that has made me to be bold in all games. I am respected in Israel thanks to the exploits of Austin Ejide, Dele Aiyenugba and Vincent Enyeama who are all highly respected here in Israel.

OGN– Why do you think African goalkeepers are not much in Europe?

Udoh – First of all you can only use two goalkeepers in a game. One on the pitch and another off the pitch. So that means generally goalkeepers are not so much in demand like outfield players.
However I think the problem most African goalkeepers face in Europe is usually that of staying focus, most of them lose focus after moving to Europe and the ones who are yet to move abroad are not fortunate enough to have good trainers and facilities.

OGN– Finally, what should Nigerians expect from this set of Flying Eagles starting with the Guinea-Bissau game?

Udoh – First of all our aim is to make up for the disappointment of failing to qualify for the last African Youth Championship. On my part and I believe it’s same for my teammates we will do everything for this team to qualify. Our aim is to start off with a good result against Guinea Bissau.

U20 AFCON Qualifiers: Wasiu Alalade Hit Brace As Guinea Bissau Force Flying Eagles To Draw In Bissau

The Nigeria U20 let slip a two goal lead to draw 2-2 against Guinea Bissau in the first leg of the final qualifying round for the African Youth Championship which took place in Bissau.

Nigeria started the game the better side and it wasn’t long before they race into a two zero lead, thanks to a well taken brace by Enyimba FC forward Wasiu Alalade.

Alalade put the Eagles ahead in the 15th minute before adding another in the 35th minute to give the Nigerian side a 2-0 lead as both teams head into the dressing room.

Guinea Bissau emerged from the break a changed side and thanks to some questionable officiating pulled a goal back in the 55th minute before drawing level ten minutes after their first goal.
Flying Eagles of Nigeria were frustrated by the officiating with as many as six of them getting booked for offences which ordinarily shouldn’t have earned them a yellow.

Few minutes to the end of the game, the Nigerians almost stole an away win but Peter Eneji, one of the seven players booked failed to make the most contact with the ball during a goal mouth scramble.
The return leg will come up in two weeks time in Nigeria at the UJ Eusene Stadium in Calabar, the capital of Cross River State following a confirmation by the Nigeria Football Federation ( NFF) yesterday.

Unfortunately, if we start going through these players ages, one by one, we will disband this team...

Hopefully by the time the foreign based come in, we will have a more realistic under 20 side.

Honestly, they are the ones I keenly got my eyes on in this 2019 U-20 class... The likes of Samuel Chukwueze, Kingsley Michael, and co... Who passed through the U-17 program too. This is why I take the U-17 program of our football since 2013 very seriously since the advent of MRI in 2011 at FIFA U-17 WCs. Even from the MRI-confirmed U-17 side that failed to qualify for the 2017 CAF and FIFA tournaments, we have a couple of them who have made good moves abroad (e.g. Igho ogbu) and who can grow into future stars. It is well. We would still have the genuine ones pull through somehow.

I have seen experienced sides lose 4-0 leads.

Away games in West Africa are typically difficult.

We hope the crew will put things right to ensure we get the needed result in the return leg.

That flying Eagles defense is too porous. Even coach Maikaba complained about it. It really needs to be worked on. The Guinea Bissau guys are no push overs. About 9 of their players play in the Portuguese league
