In Nigeria, the best way to win any competition is to have a sob story. A story about poverty. A story about how you survived by drinking garri and eating insects throughout your childhood days. This is the best way to draw the hearts of the audience and win their votes.

As Nigerians and avid watchers of the BBNaija show, we claim to want realness. We want the contestants to be real. But there’s a hitch. Nigerians associate poverty with realness. For us to classify you as being real, you have to come from a poor background and have a story so sad, it brings us to tears. You also have to be fluent in pidgin and have that razz attitude that proves that you came from
the ‘streets’.

Efe is a typical example of how we all love the grass to grace story. He was the boy born without even a wooden spoon. And we all fell for it. He won the hearts of everyone with his ‘realness’.
