The Anambra State government has commenced the employment of additional 1000 teachers to strengthen the work force in the education sector.

The government has also directed the completion of the fencing of girls’ secondary schools yet to be fenced in the state.

GovernorWillie Obiano disclosed this recently during the inauguration of the new office complex of the Post Primary School Service Commission (PPSSC) Onitsha Education zone built by the Parents Teachers Association (PTA).

Obiano said that the success Anambra State was experiencing in the education sector was as a result of the enhancement of supervision, adding that it has improved the quality of education across the schools in the state to conform with acceptable standards.

“Supervision of education is key to quality education enforcement. If you leave the schools on their own without supervision, we probably will not get the kind of result we are having today in this state. This year we are going to enhance the supervision arm of the education sector, so that they can do more by supervising teachers.

“I am sure you are already aware of the 1st phase of our recruitment of teachers is ongoing. We are recruiting 1000 teachers as we speak, 500 teachers for the secondary and 500 for the primary section. By the time these teachers will finish undergoing their training and deployed to various areas, we will commence the 2nd phase. We want to achieve the number of teacher-to-pupil ratio as stipulated by the United Nations”, he said.

The governor promised to include the fencing of the PPSSC Onitsha education zone compound in the ongoing fencing of all the technical colleges and girls’ secondary schools.

“I have given instruction to change the roofs of these old buildings and to landscape this place with immediate effect. I have instructed the commissioner for public utilities and his counterpart the commissioner for education to estimate the capacity of electric generating set to be used here; the sinking of a borehole to ensure distribution of water in all buildings here and to include this place in the fencing ongoing at all the technical college and Girls’ schools yet to be fenced. All this should be delivered and completed within two weeks”, Obiano said.

The governor thanked the parents of the students for erecting such beautiful edifice and urged parents of other educational zone to emulate same.

In their separate speeches, the Commissioner for education, Prof Kate Omenugha, Chairman of the PPSSC, Lady Joy Ulasi and Zonal Director of Education Onitsha, Mrs. Ugo Eze, eulogised the achievements of the governor in the educational sector, saying that parents and other stakeholders’ contributions were as a result of the good leadership provided by the present administration.

They, on behalf of the principals and teachers, said they will continue to sacrifice their best to enhance quality of education in Anambra State.

The Chairman of Onitsha North Local Government, Mr. Patrick Aghamba and the chairman of the occasion, Chief Francis Udeoba, welcomed the governor and his team and urged other well-meaning individuals from the state to support government projects.
