All four Nigerian representatives in all the continental club competition zoom to the next round of the both CAF Champions League and the Confederation Cup respectively for the first time in recent participation.

In spite of the fact that MFM FC and Plateau United already had one leg in the next round each before their respective return leg fixtures on Wednesday, their respective win secured them into the next round of the competition. Enyimba will face Benin Republic’s Energie FC in the first round of the CAF Confederation Cup after the modest side secured a shocking 2-1 aggregate win over Haifa of Guinea in the preliminary round.

While Akwa United prove doubters wrong with a comfortable 2-0 win over Hawk FC of Gambia.

Men,these fixtures are bloody. Only Enyimba got it easy in my opinion. Meanwhile... By the powers vested in me by the good NPFL faithfuls and followers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,I hereby confer the title of come-back kings on Akwa United FC.

Except we want to lie to ourselves or be patriotic and sentimental. Club football in Africa is lorded over by the north Africans and maybe Tp Mazembe. Personally I believe mfm and plateau won't make it past this round.

Etoile du Sahel of Tunisia! Oh! I weep for Plateau United.
MFM against MC Algiers is a no-mean feat too. I weep for them in advance.

As usual, Up The Peoples Elephant.
Up Enyimba...we got a soft landing.

Enyimba got a bye in the confederations cup and face a team from Benin. Akwa shocked me by overturning a 2-1 deficit at Uyo, they won 2-0 at Banjul. They should move past All Ithiad in the next round. Mfm were rock solid but would face a stern test in Mc Algiers. Those folks beat AC Otoho 9-0.

Plateau have the toughest tie in Etiole du Sahel, they would prolly go into the caf confederations cup.

Step by step. You don't expect greenhorns to sack established continental giants overnight. That being said the consistency that makes north african teams powerhouses must be our target. The NPFL should look at the structure of clubs with the aim of establishing their long term viability. This can be done by encouraging them firstly to evolve their ownership away from sole proprietorship either by state governments or individuals. The overall aim will be to make them public liability companies in the long run so that funding is more broad based and individual influences and fortunes are contained. It can set this as a precondition for teams to be promoted from the NSL and give the existing NPFL clubs a set medium term limit which to devolve or evolve their ownership structure.

The idea of waiting for a 'sports loving governor' or billionaire politico-socialite looking for publicity or a plaything to massage his ego, to awaken the fortunes of a regional club can then be out of the window permanently. You can imagine that all four reps last season did not make it this time around and shows the inconsistency that cannot bring success at the international stage.

Commercial success which is vital to the long term viability of clubs also requires a more robust structure of league clubs. Sponsorship thrives on stability and sustainable success. Sponsorship thrives on branding. Sponsorship thrives on organisation. Sponsorship primarily comes from the private sector and they prefer to deal with 'private sector counterparts'. No one is comfortable giving money to a government owned entity due to accountability issues so clubs should be herded by the NPFL towards making them business centres.

With proper funding comes the ability to plan long term, tie down squad players to proper contracts, build infrastructure and brand.
