9) The Many Wives of Patrick

Starring Patrick Cargill, who is also the star of the next sitcom.

10) Father, Dear Father

(Patrick and everybody in this sitcom is insane! There’s a good shot of HG the dog)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tEGMd8fdK4

11) Mixed Blessings

There were people who always had to announce that “Muriel Oduntan is Nigerian” anytime this show was on air.

It’s about a black girl and a white boy who fall in love and get married. However, both their fathers are extremely racist. The show is about how the fathers come to terms with the fact that they have in-laws that are of a different colour and how the mothers try to keep peace and keep the fathers in line.

I particularly like the episode in which the white father-in-law had to defend his daughter-in-law when he was talking to another racist.

12) Love Thy Neighbour

grin grin grin A white racist discovers that his new neighbour is black. What’s worse, the neighbour also works in the same company and attends the same pub that he attends. The white guy tries various schemes to get rid of the black man, but they always backfire and the white guy is usually the butt of the jokes. There’s also the fact that the white man secretly admires the black man’s wife.

24) George and Mildred
The movie version of this was a regular holiday movie on Nigerian TV in the 1980s. The TV series is a spinoff from Man About The House.

25) It’s Your Move (I’m sorry darling)
This is another regular holiday movie. The only words that were spoken in this movie were spoken by a parrot that kept repeating, “I’m sorry darling”.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeRT07fvzXg

26) Are You Being Served?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lT4lsruu_KI

27)Oh, God!

This is another hilarious holiday movie.
God appears to the manager of a supermarket and tells him that he has been selected to be God's new messenger to the world.

The manager faces opposition from atheists and from some pastors (because God told him that the pastors are fake). One of the pastors sues him because he publicly declared that the pastor is fake. The supermarket manager has to defend himself, prove the existence of God and hope that God testifies on his behalf in court.

It stars George Burns as God.

28) On The Buses
This was occasionally shown on LTV as a holiday movie.

29) Yes Minister/Yes Prime Minister

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDEMthILzpA

30) Allo Allo
I think that this sitcom was first shown on Nigerian TV in 1989, as part of NTA2 Channel 5's Super 7:20 belt.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XEyxA78hiQ

31) Navy sitcom
I cannot remember the name of this sitcom, but it was shown on Nigerian TV in the early 1980s. The end credits had a picture of two naval ships fighting. We usually tried to guess which ship would win the battle. The battle usually ended when one ship sank the other.

I would be very happy if someone can remind me of the title of the sitcom.

32) Hopscotch sitcom

I cannot remember the name of this sitcom. It is a British about some kids that home alone. I think their mother was in the hospital or something like that. The sitcom was about the things they did so that people would not know that they were on their own.

The opening credit showed the kids playing hopscotch on the street.

I would be very happy if someone can remind me of the title of the sitcom.

37) Comedy Tonight
This show featured clips of many conedians, especially legends like Abbot & Costello, Red Skelton, George Burns, Bob Hope and Groucho Marx.

38) CHiPS

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTDOLoDiOcg

39) Hey Abott! (Abott and Costello special introduced by Milton Berle)

This was probably my favourite holiday special ever. It's a special about two legendary comedians and it was presented by another legend.

I don't have a video of the actual special, so instead I'll post videos of two of Abott and Costello's most famous routines (which have been copied by hundreds of other comedians).

Who's On First?

Do you think you know arithmetic? Well, you'll be surprised and confused when you see Abott and Costello's arithmetics.

41) Road To Bali (Bing Crosby and Bob Hope)

Bing Crosby and Bob Hope were very succesful singers, actors and comedians. They achieved great success in the 1940s and '50s with their "Road To. . ." series of films. The film that was usually shown as a holiday movie on Nigerian television in the '70s, '80s and '90s was The Road To Bali.

49) British taxi driver secretary
I can't remember the name of this sitcom, but it was shown on NTA2 Channel 5's Super 7:20 belt in 1989.

A taxi driver picks up a woman and he discovers that the woman is his old secondary school girlfriend. The woman owns a company, but she is embarrassed that she is doing so well while the man is a cab driver, so she lies that she is a secretary and says that her actual secretary is her boss.

The man and the woman have an affair, but the woman has to try and prevent the man from finding out the truth (that she's very successful).

50) Frank’s Place

51) Sura De Tailor
Was there anything that Tunji Oyelana could not do? He is a fantastic singer, an amazing actor and a great comedian.

This is a video of the original song. This song was adapted to create the theme song of this sitcom and the song was further adapted by the government to create a patriotic song.

The theme song had this refrain.

"Sura de tailor,
oko Adunni,
the friend of Major,
expert in Toro, danshiki, and buba, also English coat and trouser o....

Sura, Sura
Sura de Tailor is your man.
Sura, Sura
Sura de Tailor is your frie-n-d."

56) Sunny Side Of Life
This was a talk show about social, political and economic issues in the Nigerian society. It featured an "Igbo man, a Hausa man and a Yoruba man". They spoke with exaggerated accents and wore clothes that are associated with these ethnic nationalities. They often proffered humorous solutions to the problems facing Nigeria.

Interestingly, the "Yoruba man" was actually an Igbo man (Jegede Shokoya/Claude Eke), the "Hausa man" was actually a Yoruba man (Sotayo) and the "Igbo man" was actually a Tiv man (Patrick Ityohegh). Patrick Ityoyegh later became the Director General of the NTA in 1996.

Sunny Side of Life was shown at 8pm on Sundays in the 1980s.

Here is a tribute to the late Dr Patrick Ityohegh (including shots from Sunny Side of Life).

61) Mazi Mpeperempe and Uncle Joe

62) Tony St Iyke
Most people know the late great Tony St Iyke as Okonkwo in Second Chance or as the guy that did the UBA advert in the 1980s and 1990s, but I had seen him on TV before he acted in either of those.

Tony St Iyke acted in a sitcom in the early 1980s. The sitcom was about a group of boys (in their late teens & early 20s) who shared a flat. Tony St Iyke's catch phrase was, "A guy's gotta do what a guy's gotta do" (he pronounced the word guy as "goy" ). Unfortunately I can't remember the name of that sitcom.

63) The Charly Boy Show
Charly Boy decided that he had had enough of the antics of "junk journalists" and so he decided to create his own show in 1989.

64) Papa Ajasco
Long before the popular Papa Ajasco TV series was created in the 1990s, there was Papa Ajasco the movie, which was made in 1983 and shown on some state TV stations, including LTV.

65) Alawada Theatre
Baba Sala.

66) Bandwagon Comedy Hour
John Chukwu was undoubtedly the most famous and most succesful stand up comedian in Nigeria in the 1970s and '80s. He was the host of the Nigerian Music Awards (NMA), was the master of ceremonies at various fashion shows and entertainment events and he was also the MC at various state occasions, eg, the independence eve Command Performance.

John Chukwu did not only perform on stage. He had several radio and TV shows on Radio Nigeria and the NTA (Laf Matta). One of those shows, Bandwagon Comedy Hour, started out as a radio show and later became a TV show.

Here is a radio broadcast of Bandwagon Comedy Hour on Radio Nigeria 2 in 1979.

69) Icheoku
This sitcom is about a court in Igboland during the colonial era. The judge was British and the court clerk was his interpreter. The members of the public only understood Igbo, while the judge only understood English.

Hillarity was provided by the funny interpretation of the court clerk. I'll post a screenshot below of an episode that I remember very well.

The court clerk and the members of the public had been waiting for a long time for the judge to arrive.

The judge arrived the court very late and he told the court clerk to apologise to the people and tell them that he came late because he was hearing cases in another community when it started raining cats and dogs, so he had to shelter in that community until the rain subsided.

The court clerk looked shocked. The judge told him to go ahead and translate what he said. So the court clerk told the people that the judge said that he was late because pussycat and dogs started raining and jumping down from the sky just as the judge was about to come to their community.

70) Jacob And Papilolo

Bonus) Carry On Matron.

The Carry On series of films were very popular in Nigeria, but they were not shown on Nigerian TV for obvious reasons, except this one. This was shown on LTV.

Good old days....

That was when snakes and monkeys were not millionaires in Nigeria.

That was when people coexisted together in unity and shared a common bond of brotherliness devoid of tribal sentiments.

Indeed, there was a country!
