By Okon Bassey in Uyo

Following the level of Federal Government interest, more than 100 companies across the globe have reportedly indicated interest for the development of the Ibom Deep Sea port in Ibaka, Mbo local government area of Akwa Ibom State.

Speaking during an interview in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Housing and Special Duties, Mr. Akan Okon stressed that despite the interest so far shown in the project the bidding was still open till March 16, 2018.

He attributed the level of success recorded in the project to the commitment of the State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel whom he said brought to bear his experience in private sector in project execution of that magnitude.

Soon on coming on board, he said the Governor set up a committee made up of experience and seasoned people in the maritime industry to pilot the realisation of the Ibom Deep Sea port.

According to him, for the first time since the conception of the project about five years ago the committee had been able to push to a critical level seen as a major milestone to achieve the project.

Already, Mr. Okon said the Ministerial Steering Committee met in Abuja and approved procedures for procurement which led to publication of qualification for interested port builder.

“I am happy to tell you that the bidding is still open and the response is encouraging.

“We have over 100 companies all over the world showing interest and it is expected more are coming. The closure is extended to March 16, 2018.

“After that the evaluation committee is going to meet to evaluate and come up with a preferred institution that will build the port”, he stated.

The Commissioner whose Ministry oversee the project linked the high interest being shown on the project to the location and draft of the port.

“Without dredging, the port is about 17-18 metres deep, so it can take any large ship than cannot go near any other port in the country. The width is about 600 metres which is the size of six football fields.

“That is why you see in some of the ports in the country when vessels come they cannot berth rather use other smaller vessels to go and remove goods. It will not be so at the Ibom deep Sea Port.

“The issue of congestion is not there because the length is about 600,000 metres. It is a modern port and a port for the future.

“I am certain that by the time the evaluation is completed and the preferred developer chosen, the actual construction work will commence. 75 percent of the paper work prior to commencement of construction has been completed”, the Commissioner stressed.

I wish this is not another white elephant project.

This will be really nice as it will help with the stress of moving containers from Lagos to Nnewi, Onitsha and Aba, considering the bad roads and Customs and Police check points.

Uyo to Aba is just few kilometers.

Western port needs to be decongested .

But Nigerian politics won't allow that, though it will bring ease to the Eastern merchants, more revenue to the SS, Sanity and modern urban planning opportunities to the West and options for the North.

Location
Strategically located to serve West and Central African Region, JDZ Sao Tome, Equatorial Guinea, Cameroun, Angola, Gabon, Congo, Congo DRC, Chad etc

The Ibom Deep Seaport will occupy 2,565Ha of land area of the 14,517Ha available for the industrial city project. The approximate location of the project site scaled from the British Admiralty Chart No. 1387 are Latitude 04 32’ 35” N: Longitude 080 14’ 07” E. and UTM coordinates 415168 m E; 502,199 m N (UTM Zone 32N).” as 2nd para.

Key factors:

Greenfield port project

Deep water access (18m in the channel, allowing >15m+ vessels in the port)

5,129 hectares for port development

Port is part of the 14,400 hectare Ibom Industrial City

Proximity to major shipping routes

Operations protected from waves, currents and winds

Combined deep sea port and FTZ development in Akwa Ibom State

Short distance to destination markets to minimize
feeder transit and costs

Large gateway market size to attract direct vessel
services

Sizeable transshipment cargo hinterlands for feeder
shipping network connection
IDSP is well positioned to offer a value proposition superior to other ports in the region. No port in the West African region has yet to be established as a major transshipment hub.

Hope rises for Ibom Deep Seaport as procurement process begins

There are indications that the construction of the Ibom Deep Seaport (IDSP) will soon start following the advertisement of the Request for Qualification (RFQ) from reputable private sector port operators in partnership with the Akwa Ibom State Government and the Federal Government. The RFQ is a major step critical towards the implementation of the IDSP project, apparently one of the most promising Public- Private Partnership (PPP) initiatives in Africa because of the several multiplier effects it will create in Nigeria and other African nations. The company disclosed on its website that: “The Akwa Ibom State Government, as part of its industrialisation plans, is very keen on implementing the Ibom Deep Seaport project as part of the Ibom Industrial City development through a PPP arrangement. The deep seaport, although a part of the industrial city, is treated as a separate project. The Ibom Deep Seaport will be owned by the Federal Government of Nigeria through the Nigeria Ports Authority in partnership with Akwa Ibom State Government and private investors.

Federal Ministry of Transportation / Akwa Ibom State Government

Ibom Deep Sea Port Project
(Solicited Proposal): The Ibom Deep Sea Port (IDSP) project involves the development of a Greenfield Deepsea Port and accompanying Free Trade Zone (FTZ) in Akwa Ibom State in the South-South geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The proposed Port and FTZ are part of the proposed Ibom Industrial City initiative that will be established on a 14,400 hectare site donated by the Akwa Ibom State Government (AKSG) at no value. The IDSP project is intended to become a major national and regional economic gateway that will provide additional container handling capacity for the country. In addition to containers, the IDSP is expected to handle petroleum products (export and import), crude oil and natural gas (export), vehicles (import) and bulk trade in natural resources (import and export).

It is planned to be the deepest port in the West African sub-region.

Ports Sector The project is currently in Procurement Phase. The Commission granted an Outline Business Case (OBC) Compliance Certificate to the project on October 8th, 2014. Thereafter, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved the OBC on 11th May, 2015. The Federal Ministry of Transportation and AKSG are required to proceed to the project procurement phase. PWC has been appointed as project managers

RfQ has been advertised

Great news well know who's building the port by April since bidding ends March 16. The site is great co soldering it's natural deeper than the other ports in Nigeria. After this move on to industrial city and getting OGFZ in Port and or Ikot Abasi.

In the end, it was cries of IPOB members on Nairaland that finally started giving life to this project.

One day, the future generations of Akwa Cross people will read comments of pro Biafrans on Nairaland concerning their calls for the development of this port.

God bless Kanu and all IPOB

Shut boy the project was planned and got going way back 2004. Stop giving yourself credit for ranting on internet. Even before that there were talks in 80's about port but your telling me about IPOB and internet activist.

Lol you Igbos always want to take credit for things that happen outside borders. I guess the actual work by Akwa Ibom state government is inconsequential.

Afonjas looking at Akwa Ibom with bad eye...saying in their minds: you want to finish us abi? First, you are building towers/skycrappers to relocate oil companies from Lagos to Akwa Ibom by force, and now, you are building the largest seaport in Nigeria to corner all shipping from Lagos ports to Akwa Ibom. Watch as Afonja media will start focusing negatively on Ibibio very soon like they do to Igbos and Ijaws whom they see as their biggest threat in the East.

Yeah right. You must always drag Yoruba to your pettiness. Lekki sea port is already being constructed.

Eternal crybaby don't you get tired. Lol this same way you danced like a monkey on Ebonyi thread regarding herdsmen because you don't read. Your right the internet doesn't forget. The eastern port didn't need to be dredged the need an actual deep seaport with higher draft. Please you couldn't debunk that thread and cried me a river.

Your plans against Old Eastern ports have failed woefully.

Go join Awolowo through the means he passed.

I know that you are so pained, hurt and frustrated that your plans failed.
