The Anambra State Government has banned the operations of commercial motorcycles popularly known as Okada, after 7pm across the State.

The government said it is part of efforts to curb resurging crime in the state, warning that flouting the order would attract severe sanctions.
Tony Nnachetta, commissioner for Information and Communications Strategy, in a press release made available to journalists in Awka on Sunday, stressed that in recent times, there have been a resurgence of armed robbery and other sundry crimes in the State.

It added that, “Security reports confirmed that these hoodlums operate with motorcycles. As part of the security measures towards checkmating the activities of these hoodlums, government hereby announces a ban on the use of commercial motorcycles popularly known as ‘Okada’ after 7pm across the State.

“Henceforth, Okada riders are only allowed to operate within the hours
of 6am to 7pm,” he added.

According to Nnacheta, the ban is an indication of government’s determination to maintain law and order, as well as protect life and
property of law-abiding citizens.

He warned criminals and evil-minded persons to desist from their evil acts or face the full weight of the law.

He enjoined the public to be security conscious and to offer information to security agencies at any given time.

So for areas that have bad roads, would having to walk now make them safer? Those that profit from putting in extra late hours to make ends meet would now pay for the vices of other less honest countrymen. Can they be blamed for increasing their daytime fares as so?
As long as those thieving fellows have no better place to channel their productive energy, they'ld always see crime as an option. The government still needs to empower them; and those whose livelihood may be affected by this decision.

Better dan outright banning okada like okorocha did to okada and keke without providing ADEQUATE alternative. Atleast dis is a well intentioned move even though it may not b d best solution.

That's the black man's eternal problem. Focusing on the symptoms rather than the main disease.

I remember how the government through the very useless Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) made a lot of noise and inconvenienced us with their useless SIM registration many years ago. The stated purpose was to curb kidnapping and other crimes. Interestingly, the rate of kidnapping and other crimes has increased exponentially after SIM registration than it was before then. So what's the point of the whole nonsense?

In the same way, banning Okadas because criminals use bikes to operate just shows how incompetent we are as a people. How about the countless kidnappings and robberies that use cars as modes of transport?

I desperately hope I'll be alive to witness a time when those in government begin to think up and implement sensible, long term solutions to societal problems, rather than the low hanging fruit, knee-jerk approach that is the norm now.

We need brilliant outliers in leadership positions. If you're a daft idiot with some connections or with stolen money and that's why you're in one crucial government position - moving around with a siren-blaring convoy with loads of policemen, then you're not special. In fact you deserve to be killed because you're cheating the rest of society. We need special people in these positions. Not 'connected' or 'lucky', pot bellied bastards forming 'chief' this or 'Owelle' that all over the place with their empty brains that can't devise intelligent solutions to societal problems.

Myopic, and a testament to the lack of ideas on finding lasting solution to the myriad of security challenges facing the state. He should decree to fix energy (light) in his state; that alone will take care of a chunck of the security issues rearing its head in Anambra daily nay Nigeria.

This is just a prelude. Outright ban is already on the table to be implemented immediately after the second term inauguration.
