Acting President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has ordered that the chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission, (INEC) Professor Maurice Iwu proceed on a pre-disengagement leave, with immediate effect.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by the spokesman of the Acting President Mr. Ima Niboro which stated that “the Acting President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, has directed the Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Maurice Iwu, to proceed on pre- disengagement leave with immediate effect.”

“The Acting President’s directive is in consonance with Section 155(1) (c), which stipulates that the Chairman and members of the Independent Electoral Commission shall hold office for a period of five years”.

Professor Iwu’s tenure however expires on 13th June, 2010.

According to Mr. Niboro “He has also been directed to hand over to the most senior National Commissioner, who shall oversee the activities of the commission pending the appointment of a substantive chairman”.

The Acting President thanked the outgoing Chairman of INEC for his service to the nation and wished him success in his future endeavours.

Although this move is gutsy and commendable, the problem with Nigeria never lies with ONE man. The solution will also defy ONE man. The Nigerian system is constantly churning out "Iwus"; we have them in abundance and another "Iwu" is waiting in the wings to take over.

Soldier go, soldier come.

i don't see anything breaking news about this.
jonathan shld be bold enough to give nigerians reason(s) for his action.
the idea of petting corrupt men out of office only turn back and compensate them with a different office the next day.
fools like iwu is supposed not to enjoy his godforsaken loots.
another question that comes to mind will be, WHO IS NEXT.
we must accept the fact that pdp is out in their criminalities to remain in power by all means.

I will say what I've always said -- Maurice Iwu ain't our problem. The political class that hire thugs to snatch ballot boxes are the issue. Is he the first man to chair our electoral body?

Sorry to dissappoint you, Iwu supporter but the next INEC chair will likely be Ribadu, and even if its not Ribadu will do better than that disgrace of a Prof.

This is good news. I have a feeling that there is some damaging information about to surface about this Iwu. Goodluck was talking more of allowing him to run out his tenure, I wonder why he decided to cut it short abruptly. I bet there is some heavy dirt about to come out on this guy. I wonder if its linked to that leader of the PDP.

Let this be just the beginning of the move forward for Nigeria, not just about individuals but institutional change.
Re: Breaking News: Jonathan Removes Maurice Iwu by Nobody: 11:01pm On Apr 28, 2010
I have always argued that the system is the problem not just Maurice Iwu or whoever will be appointed INEC Chair.
I have also said it is also up to the acting President to decide.

Now that Jonathan has made his choice, goodluck to whoever is appointed next.

Lets support whoever is appointed next for the sake of the country. But reforms must go beyond changing the INEC head.

I equally won't be surprised if there isn't. He simply didn't seem able to deliver and that should be reason enough.

They need to check his bank accounts, he was in London a few weeks ago. If he had a heads up that is about to go, he probably did some HEAVY stashing for old times sake.

True. Which is why one still wonders when the so called electoral reforms would translate to passed bills backed up by a zealous judiciary and law enforcement officials. Still waiting to see how true the reports of Ibori fleeing with the aid of law enforcement bodies are and waiting to see if anybody would actually get punished and made accountable, or whether people would see a man possibly running away with his loot intact as victory for the Nigerian people. . . . . . . . .  . again.

Just checking up Professor Iwu's biography, and got the following:

Maurice Mmaduakolam Iwu was born on 21 April 1950 in Umuezeala, Umukabia, Ehime Mbano in Imo State. He attended St. Pius X College, Bodo-Ogoni for his secondary education. He studied at the University of Bradford, England, receiving a Master of Pharmacy degree in 1976 and a Ph.D in 1978. He was WHO Visiting Scholar to Dyson Perrins Laboratory, University of Oxford (1980), Fulbright Senior Scholar, Ohio State University and won the U.S National Research International Prize for Ethonobiolology in 1999. He was a Professor of Pharmacognosy at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (1984–1993).[1]

Entering business, Iwu became Vice-President, Research and Development of Tom's of Maine, a personal care manufacturing company, and member of the Board of Directors, Axxon Biopharm inc. He served on the Board of InterCEDD, Fund for integrated Rural Development and Traditional Medicine, and Center for Economic and Social Justice. He was the United Nation's Lead Consultant for the development of Nigeria's National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan. Iwu has published more than 100 research articles and is the author of four books.[1]

Professor Iwu was President of the International Society of ethnobiology (1996–2002), member and ex-President of the Nigerian Society of Pharmacognosy, Member of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene and Member of the International Society for Medicinal Plant Research. He was the Executive Director, Bioresources Development and Conservation Program and a Senior Research Associate at the Division of Experimental Therapeutics of Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, Washington D.C.

If a man of his intelligence and academic achievement could be so given an international recognition such that the West were asking for his removal (I didnt mention he was corrupt here though), and some of you were asking for the EFCC to pick him up, then where lies the hope of Nigeria?

So this corruption cankerworm goes beyond being educated abroad, goes beyond intelligence, race, religion, tribe, social status and everything you can think of, and is unfortunately endemic in Nigeria

We are desperately in need of a cure!

Hitler was also educated. Sometimes people mistake education for integrity, and you might be in danger of doing such. I can't personally say whether Iwu was corrupt or not and to be honest if it turns out he wasn't I would not be shocked, he just couldn't seem to deliver.
Re: Breaking News: Jonathan Removes Maurice Iwu by haronky7: 11:19pm On Apr 28, 2010
@Sky Blue

Hitlers education cannot in any be compared to a world acclaimed Professor with a pronounced international touch; Hitler was a soldier and we know what it takes to be one back then

As much as I agree with you that education is different from integrity, then if those who are intelligent got simple arithmetic wrong why blame the likes of Bakin Zuwo?

That makes Iwu a well qualified failure,

Who appoints the next INEC chairman? If its Goodluck or PDP by proxy and at the same time finance the day to day running of INEC, sorry mates nothing changed. They can't appoint who will not rig them in. Removing Iwu is just a formality. The incoming Chairman will be a replica of Iwu.

I hope you don't mind me saying, but your questions seem a tad rhetorical due to how obvious the answers seem. Education does not automatically make one competent. Education does not necessarily mean one is more connected to what is happening on the ground. Education does not even necessarily mean one understands certain things better. Education does not mean one is able to get things done. Just to add to that, what was Iwu's area of specialisation before he got the INEC post? How does a pharmacy degree translate to chairman of INEC?
