Peter Dada, Akure
The Federal Government has said that the teaching of science subjects and mathematics in indigenous languages in primary and secondary schools across the country would commence soon.
Director-General of the National Centre for Technology Management, Prof. Okechukwu Ukwuoma, stated this during a retreat organised for researchers in Akure, capital of Ondo State.
Ukwuoma, who is a member of a committee set up to supervise the project, also disclosed that experts were contracted to translate science and mathematics terminologies to the various indigenous languages spoken in the country.
He said, “Last year, the Minister of Science and Technology and the Minister of Education inaugurated a committee to teach science and mathematics in indigenous languages. The major issue in that regard is the translation of terminologies to the languages for which we have consulted experts in different languages in the country.
The don, who commended the Federal government on the idea, expressed optimism in the success of the project. He also noted that many textbooks had already been translated to some Nigerian languages through the efforts of the committee.
The NACETEM boss stressed the need for researchers to contribute toward the development of science and technology in the country. He lamented the lack of good research works in the country, blaming it on the lust for quick and easy money amongst the people.
“All over the world everything about science and technology is always hard to sell because you need to convince people. Nigerians are good researchers, but they lack something.
“Many businessmen who are supposed ensure the commercialisation of research inventions prefer to buy fake ones outside the country and come back to make quick money,” he said.
However, Ukwuoma disclosed that the Federal Government had established a National Research and Innovation Fund, which would be accessed by entrepreneurs or innovators interested in developing science and technology inventions
The don said, “Information is what people need.
When people lack information, they find it very difficult to find solution to some problems. So we need really to get some information about what is going on.”

The question I want to ask those against this policy....
Your mechanic, your electrician, your builder, your plumber, your generator man.....
What language do u think dictates those guyz thought process when they do their job.....
U think it's english.....
They express their technological prowess via a local language they are comfortable with....
That goes to show u that technology is a universal language....
U don't need english to understand it....
What then is wrong if we actually establish technical schools to properly educate our artisans and ensure they are in tune with modern dictates in technology....
Should we bother about making them learn English first b4 admission into the school....
Of what use is english language in their normal work life....
Every year construction companies in nigeria import artisans from philipines, china, Korea, india, Thailand to do plumbing and electrical works.....
This guyz can't even write their names in english....
When u challenge this companies about violation of local contents....
They will tell u they will even prefer to hire local artisans since they are cheaper, but nigerian artisans are not well trained and not good enough to take complex industrial tasks.....
Yet we feel b4 admission into college of technology a student must have C6 in english.....
Of what use is that......
Knowledge is power irrespective of language....
U guys should think...

At this junction, all you need is to wish that your language should be included in the system.

It won't happen. My people will remain marginalised and aggrieved. This is why we speak English. No matter how you hate English, it is the best language for us if we wish to remain united. Any other language will lead to our disintegration, wars, killings... I will appreciate your language and I hope you will appreciate mine. But neither of us should FORCE the other to speak our native tongues. Neither should judgments based on whether a person spoke in a native language or not.
Re: Science, Maths Teaching In Indigenous Languages To Begin Soon –FG by SIRTee15: 2:49pm On Mar 09, 2018
I understand our local language didn't originate from Latin....
Thus it will be difficult to use it to teach complex science topics....
Thus medium of instruction in our higher institutions can remain english especially abstract and pure science courses.....
However our local languages can easily be developed to teach basic sciences and maths in primary schools and junior secondary schools.....
And possibly senior secondary schools....
As far as am concerned, foundation is the key....
When the foundation is solid, there's no way the structure will come out faulty...
It may not be as good as expected, but it will still be pretty ok....
Teach this subjects in a local language the child understand and appreciates the sound knowledge of science and maths amongst our students in the future....
It will also create a complete and new different way of scientifical thinking among our intellectuals....
We are trained to look up to the whites, we need to train our people to look within...
To see the potential and value in our environment and harness it for productive and meaningful use....
As a people, we need to give local names to our minerals, our plants, the organs in our body....
In that way, we understand this things better....
As a nation this is what we need.....
If WE want to stop playing catch up with the rest of the world, then we need a radical disruptive approach to our educational system to be on top of the game....
We missed the agricultural revolution.....
We missed the industrial revolution....
We are already missing out on the 1st information technology revolution....
Now the world is going completely tech and green.....
We can't continue to do follow follow and expect to beat the real owners in their game....

What u wrote up there validate the reason why people should be trained in the language they are familiar and comfortable with....
Very few Nigerians can fully articulate and express their thoughts in english without interjection of local language....
And that's because they don't fully think in english....
A child is best trained in a language he/she thinks....
A child's thought process cannot be in one language and yet u are teaching the child in another language....
It makes understanding and assimilation difficult....
And this is the main reason Nigerians find it difficult to connect with their environment and exploit its potential....
I just don't understand the ignorance being displayed on this thread....
My father didn't learn mathematics in school but ISIRO...
yes, he was taught maths in Yoruba in primary school....
Yet he came out with 2.1 in maths and chemistry from U.I.....
His basic understanding of maths is exemplary....
And he's among few who can fully express himself in both Yoruba and english independent of each other....
Forget all the science terminologies....
Teach maths and basic science in local language and watch how the knowledge base among students expand and students becomes more innovative, creative and curious by default.....
Every year WAEC/NECO result has been woeful despite teaching in english language....
So what's the big deal about the language......
I'll come back to advocate why MATHS MOST ESPECIALLY should be taught in LOCAL LANGUAGE....

If you are in a kingdom, learn and speak the language of the kingdom.
-
No matter what tribe you claim, or mother tongue you speak, you are in the Kingdom called Nigeria. You need to learn English because this is the language of this encompassing kingdom. If you refuse to learn or speak English, you create problems for everybody else in this kingdom. Because everybody cannot learn your village language because they want to talk to only you. They will speak as I am doing now, in English.
-
If you continue refusing English then you are cutting yourself off from the kingdom called Nigeria. You are destroying it. The politicians will attain power, and mess up and dupe up of our national wealth because we are all TOO BUSY FIGHTING over our differences instead of jointly understanding and speaking English, working as a unified BODY and holding each of them accountable.
-
When YOU become our president, what language will you use? Will you also become nepotistic like Buhari, address only your people and appoint only them?

Theb when will the children learn English? If their early education is in each of their local dialects, what language should COMMON ENTRANCE be written in? SSCE? NECO, JAMB?
-
We know that children learn languages faster than adults.
Teach them the English when they are still Children. Otherwise they will never learn it as adults. They won't even be ablebto understand JAMB in English. And no hope for University with all the textbooks in English.

I've been an Engineer for over 10years. I passed further Maths back in SSCE. Did my BSc and MSc.
But the day I came across Furher Maths text book in GERMAN, there was no hope. I could not even attempt the simple questions.

Nigeria is not a native English speaking nation and will never be....
English will be still be taught as a subject right from primary school and everybody will still be able to communicate in english....
What I even notice is people who learn English as a second language actually speaks better english than those who picked it from the street....
The latter's accent and pronunciation have already been corrupted by the bad english on the street....

I did an MSc overseas. The industry came to the univerity to tell the University what to teach the students.... Software textbook etc. Even how to go for interviews and write CVs.. They only need 3years for their Engineering because everything is on point. No wasting time.
-
This only happened because the Industry is viable. It has money.
It has money because it is producing things that people are buying.
People are buying things from their local industry because they DON'T want to buy imported from China. They love their local industries and want their local industries to survive. They are not jealous of other countries.
They love each other. They don't laugh at each other. They want to remain united to each other. They are not fighting each other. They all speak one language properly. They don't favour anybody according to tribe. It's only their one language they know.
-
Their government does not allow import from China to compete with their own local industry. They told their government that THEY, THE PEOPLE can manufacture EVERYTHING they need. They openly criticize their government if it is not performing.
-
Also They respect each other. If somebody does not have gold watch, nobody will look down at him.
-
This all happened after many years of the people always FIGHTING FOR THEIR RIGHT.They did not allow corruption to go unpunished.

The scary thing is that this isn't coming from an illiterate like Buhari, but from the DG of National Centre for Tech Mgt, a goddamn professor, and from the minister of education!! Most of these Nigerian profs are frauds. How can anyone at that level think it's possible to teach STEM to people in local languages that are completely lacking in necessary vocabulary... utterly mad and incompetent people!!

I can't even think of up to 5 words for different colours in Yoruba. Not to speak of decsribing complex ideas e.g. quantum fields. The average Yoruba can't speak a sentence without an English word in it.

You can't expand a language's vocabulary by borrowing 1,000,000+ words from English or so in a very short time. It ceases to be a distinct language. It takes time, decades if not more, to build up a language's vocabulary. It can be done but it takes a very long time.

Example: Yoruba. First, Yoruba langiage professors will need to proliferate a standardized form of the language with grammar rules and all. This is then taught as a rigorous and comprehensive language course across all levels. They'd also have to come up with a dictionary that gets updated everytime. Next is media and press widely circulated in said language, including novels, plays, poetry etc.

Not after all these is accomplished, and everyone easily reads and understands the language in a standard manner, can it be possible for those in STEM fields to publish their work in Yoruba journals. Leaders in the respective fields can then agree on accepted Yoruba words for technical terms.

This will take a very long time!

The Chinese, Arabs, Indians etc can learn in their respective languages because they have a standard form and, over the course of history, have contributed to the development of science and philosophy. Your languages, in standard form, are very young compared to theirs!!

No one seems to have mentioned the biggest problem. Where do u find someone who speaks very good yoruba and also knows math?

The people wey sabi yoruba Well no day sabi academic math oh.

Then we are talking about a Nigerian system. Igbo have to do the same then the north abi? So u find a northern teacher who understands both.

long overdue.

Do we have teachers that really know the subjects and not just theories.

If you dont it.. you cant teach it in ur language.

Lots of funny comments grin But tbh thus worked in India. . .its as diverse as Nigeria and yet they teach university classes in indigenous language. I remember finally finding a hydraulics video on isohyetal area calculation, only for them to be speaking one Indian language (Bengali or Tamil or something). But I think we've gone too long speaking English, and doubt it'd be easy to just switch things up.

We should move forward and not backward for God's sakes. If it's not enough to make fulani invaders kill people anyhow, this administration wants to take this country back to the stone ages. Phew, even Modern day Chinese many are shying from theirnative language.
The Chinese, Indians, and a host of other countries found a way to teach all of the above in their language so we will also find a way, and where did you get this your Chinese story from?
