Anambra To Upgrade 3 More Hospitals To Specialist Institutions

Dr. Akabuike who made the commendation in his office in Awka, while answering questions from newsmen on Governor Obiano’s scorecard in the Health sector over the last four years, said this has been clearly evident through the establishment of Anambra State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (ASPHCDA).

According to him ASPHCDA now operates with clearly defined roles.

The Health Commissioner noted that prior to the establishment of ASPHCDA; the Primary Healthcare was managed at the Local Government Areas without clearly defined roles, which he said has led to dilapidation of about five hundred and twenty primary healthcare centers across the state.

Dr. Akabuike commended the present administration that concentrated on health reforms which included renovation of hospitals and Primary Healthcare centers, as well as equipping them and ensuring that qualified personnel are there by trained and retrained .

He noted that government has achieved a lot through the blueprint of the Health sector, which basically addressed the issue of primary , secondary and tertiary healthcare delivery .

Dr Akabuike stated that the government has draft a bill that was passed into law, establishing Anambra State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, adding that the essence of the Agency is to have the entire primary healthcare under a roof, thereby institutionalizing it in the state.

Dr. Akabuike explained that at the secondary level, the Obiano led-government is making effort to uplift three General Hospitals to specialist levels, to augment the only two specialist hospitals in the state, namely General Hospitals, Onitsha, Enugwu Ukwu and Ekwulobia as the General Hospital, Onitsha is almost completed, while work is still ongoing at the other two hospitals.

He added that they would act as referral centers to health centers.

The Health Commissioner, scored Governor Willie Obiano high on other aspects of healthcare delivery, noting that the mandate of Governor Obiano is to give Anambra people quality healthcare in its entirety that would be comparable with any standard health system in the world.
