7 steps to complete the change of ownership on your vehicle in Nigeria

Guess a lot of people are not aware of the fact that whenever you purchase a vehicle from someone else in Nigeria, there is a process involved to completely have all the documents in your name. Getting a receipt and a letter for transfer of ownership from the seller is quite necessary.

But most importantly is a copy of the proof of ownership, allocation paper and vehicle license are to be collected from the seller. At least save guard yourself from buying a stolen vehicle.

Now here 7 steps you must undergo for a proper change of ownership

1) Get a police report and court affidavit-

2) Get a police cmr

3) Get a change of ownership form-
This form is issued from the the centre where the vehicle was previously registered. They would check your documents and see if it was truly registered in the centre. Then an entry would be recorded with your name as the new owner.

4) Get your plate number-
Now that you’ve collected your change of ownership form, you can go collect your new plate number. But don't forget to go with your documents. Submit your documents and get your plate number. This comes with your proof of ownership and allocation papers

5) Get a printout- With your new plate number, go get your print out. This is where you get a consent from the government to have your new car to be assigned to your plate number which will have your name.

6) Get your vehicle license -With your print out you can now go get your vehicle license, with all your document submitted. A new vehicle will be issued to you

7) Get the road-worthiness and insurance using the same details on your vehicle license

document required

proof of ownership

allocation papers

vehicle license

means of identification.
