Anglican church bans Ogboni regalia

The Egba Diocese, Anglican Communion has declared its opposition to the wearing of Ogboni regalia to its churches and the taking of traditional chieftaincy titles by its members.

As part of the move to sanitise its fold, the diocese said those who flouted the law and persisted in wearing the regalia would be excluded from taking Holy Communion in the church.

The church's stance was contained in a communique issued by the diocese at the first session of the 12th Synod of the Diocese in Abeokuta.

A copy of the communique was obtained by our correspondent in Abeokuta on Tuesday.

The communiqué was endorsed by the Bishop of the Diocese, Rev. Emmanuel Adekunle; the Synod Secretary, Ven Folarin Adekunle; and the Registrar, Mr. Benjamin Ogunmodede.

The diocese, which frowned at the practices of wearing Ogboni regalia and the crave for traditional titles by its members, insisted that anyone who still took traditional chieftaincy titles after the directive would not be allowed to do his or her thanksgiving in the church.

The communique reads in part, "That the wearing of Ogboni regalia to the church should top henceforth, and wearers will not be allowed to receive Holy Communion.

"That henceforth, church chiefs should not take any other chieftaincy titles, except from the church community to which they belong, otherwise, they may be required to relinquish their church titles.

"Furthermore, no thanksgiving services will be held for chieftaincy titles obtained from sources other than the church."

The diocese also insisted that only people it described as committed Christians should serve as God fathers and God mothers to God children during their baptismal services and urged them to give 'spiritual mentoring" to the God children.

The synod appealed to politicians not to make the 2011 elections a do-or-die affair.
