Boko Haram Deserves Amnesty – Presidency by STEPHENBOI(m): 5:26pm On Apr 02, 2018
Garba Shehu, the spokesman of President Muhammadu Buhari, has described the amnesty the president granted to Boko Haram members as a “win-win situation.” Giving amnesty to Boko Haram insurgents would stop the bloodshed in the country and save massive resources, says the Presidency.

While receiving the freed Dapchi schoolgirls on March 23, Buhari had said the federal government was willing to accept the unconditional laying down of arms by repentant insurgents.

Speaking at an interactive session with state house correspondents during the weekend, Shehu said the amnesty would help the insurgents to “be useful to the nation.”

According to The Cable, Garba Shehu also said the measure would help the government save cost by channelling funds used in the war against insurgency to other areas.

“It is proverbially said all wars end up in the boardroom. You can defeat people technically on the field but at the end, you must come to the conference room to resolve all issues ” he said.

“So, if Boko Haram would lay down their arms and stop fighting and stop preaching their negative ideology, the country should be able to embrace them; welcome all of them so that they continue to live normal lives and be useful to the nation.

“What that means is that we will be saving cost, saving lives that are being lost through bombing, killing of service personnel and we will be saving money that we are using to procure weapons so that such money can go into services and infrastructure and welfare of the citizens of this country. It is a win-win situation.”

The presidential spokesman described as unfair, allegations that the president is shielding herdsmen accused of killings.

Why don't you just hand over the country to them so we in the better south (SE/SS) can slug it out with them and send them into extinction once and for all if they try to bring their nonsense down to our lands.

Granting Amnesty to Bokoharam tantamounts to inviting known Enemy to sleep with you in the same Bed. No to Amnesty. Drive all unlawful invaders out of Nigeria. Do meaningful Restructuring and let Nigerians control their Indigenes and Residents in their States by themselves. This is the only way we can prevent foreigners from invading our Legislatures.

Lol.... I guess this idiot doesn't know the number of Almajiris in the North.

If you give Boko Haram terrorists amnesty, many almajiris will still be recruited and you will still pay them fake amnesty money thereby wasting the country resources on some crazy terrorists.

Not surprised though, it's getting clearer that this was one of the motive of starting Boko Haram insurgency by the Northern powers.

It is getting very clear now that the fight against book haram was just a game by northerners. They pretended to be against boko haram, but in truth, they are their biggest supporters.

May the blood of all those slain by boko haram, especially Christians massacred rest on their heads forever and ever!

Once again a foolish report meant to inflame passion, Shehu Garba never said they deserved amnesty, he simply said the amnesty provides a less costly route for us as it would minimize lost of life and treasure.

This Buhari has always had a soft spot for boko haram. It's not today he started hinting at amnesty for the violent Islamists. Some of us still remember when he said that the state of emergency declared some years back during the military onslaught against boko haram was anti-north. And said something along the lines of boko haram should be getting the same treatment as the Niger Delta militants. Indeed, a leopard cannot change its spots. With the reports of huge monetary payments made to boko haram in exchange for hostages, the release of boko haram commanders, and now this call for amnesty, one would be undeserving of a brain to not have strong suspicions of collusion.

We are meant to believe that ISWAP affiliated faction of Boko Haram that operates mainly around northern Borno and Yobe axis is headed by the son of late Mohammed Yusuf.

We can also see how they have tried painting the ISWAP faction as more humane than that controlled by Abubakar Shekau to the point that ISWAP is now referred to as insurgents.

The above two statements are interlinked in that by claiming that ISWAP is headed by the son of Mohammed Yusuf, the faction is waging an insurrection on the Nigerian state over grievances stemming from the brutal clampdown on the sect by Nigerian security forces.

We are meant to believe also that the ISWAP faction split from that controlled by Shekau over disagreement on use of violence. Yeah right!

It is also on record that Buhari prefers to negotiate with this same ISWAP than with Shekau. And we saw how his Minister for Information literally praised this same faction for "honoring the cease fire agreement" as to why ISWAP released all but one of the Dapchi girls except Leah Shuabu. This is however contrary to the fact that ISWAP only released said captured girls only after the Nigerian govt paid a huge ransome for their release. I won't bother delving into the controversial circumstances surrounding the abduction saga as most of you are privy to how security personnels disappeared from Dapchi a few hours before ISWAP stormed the town and headed straight to the school.

Consider also that ISWAP has moved from hitting so-called soft targets to terrorising and abducting Nigerian army combatants.

Civilians who witnessed ISWAP latest raids in places like Baga, where quoted to have said that the terrorist were friendly and asked that "any one is free to stay or leave" the small fishing town and that "they were only there for the Nigerian security forces". This shows a paradigm shift from terrorising the civilian population to appeasing for the support. ISWAP is no different than Shekau's BH as this same ISWAP has been documented to have captured many civilians who were forced to work as slaves in remote islands on the Chad lake. So why is ISWAP now appeasing the civilian population?

In my opinion ISWAP will be granted some sort of autonomous control of the NE especially over the Chad basin. This is because the Buhari led FG has cut a deal to have ISWAP granted amnesty and self rule over the NE basin towards securing oil reserves in that region.

The war is being mishandled deliberately so as to force the rest of Nigerians to see an amnesty program and some sort of autonomous enclave granted ISWAP in the NE as the only solution towards bringing peace to the region.

If you think this is far fetched, then consider how Buhari has insisted that only cattle colonies reserved for Fulanis across the federation can appease the Fulani terrorists on rampage. And same Buhari was the first high profile individual to demand for a paid amnestice for Boko Haram as the only solution to ending the 9 year war in the NE. This is also the same Buhari who was quoted as saying that he will continue to show total support for the universal adoption of Sharia law across the country. What do you think ISWAP and BH were fighting for all these years?

Re-elect Buhari and see how he will come out fully to advance an amnesty and recognition of an autonomous region for ISWAP in NE Nigeria.
