A Navy chaplain was fired last month from his post at a Marine Corps command after he was caught on video having sex with a woman at a pub in New Orleans, USA TODAY has learned.

The Marines fired Navy Capt. Loften Thornton on March 20 for “loss of trust and confidence,” said Marine Lt. Col. Ted Wong, a spokesman for Marine Reserve. Thornton had been chaplain for Marine Forces Reserve based in New Orleans.

Wong declined to discuss what prompted the Marines to fire Thornton, a Navy chaplain since 1992. But two Defense officials confirmed that authorities were examining video that shows Thornton having sex with a woman at the Crown & Anchor Pub, a British-themed tavern across the Mississippi River from the French Quarter. They were not authorized to speak on the record because the case is under investigation. The owner of the pub, Neil Timms, said the incident took place in front of the pub by the road near some picnic tables. Timms is cooperating with authorities, he said. The bar is a five-minute drive from the Marine Reserve facility.

Thornton did not respond to a request for comment, and a Navy official said he was not available.

The “Marine Corps takes all allegations against any of our Marines or sailors seriously, and they are thoroughly investigated,” Wong said.

The Navy provides chaplains for the Marine Corps. Clergy members “are embedded within commands operating at sea and ashore to ensure 24/7 availability,” according to the Navy’s strategic plan for religious ministry. “They provide a source of comfort and refuge that enables service members and their families to practice and grow in their faith and to face personal and professional challenges.” The Marines have struggled over the last year with sexual misconduct and allegations of toxic work environments. Last year, news broke of the Marines United scandal in which a private Facebook group of current and former Marines who shared often-explicit photos of women without their consent. Several Marines have been court-martialed while others have received lesser punishment, and it prompted a new policy on social media use. More recently, Gen. Robert Neller, the Marine Corps commandant, has ordered a new investigation of sexual harassment allegations at its base in Quantico, Va., known as the Crossroads of the Marine Corps. USA TODAY reported in February that two civilian employees made complaints of sexual harassment against a Marine officer.

In March, Neller ordered the new review to focus on the complaints of Sherry Yetter and Traci Sharpe. They allege that their concerns about the officer, dating to 2013, were not taken seriously by the Marine Corps. They say he called them to his office and showed them that he was sexually aroused on several occasions. He denies the allegations.

In February, Neller fired his top liaison to Congress, Brig. Gen. Norman Cooling, after the Senate Armed Services Committee asked Defense Secretary Jim Mattis to investigate allegations that he had created a hostile work environment.

“Nobody writes a book on the correct way of parenting,” Sharron Dobbins explained to ABC 15 Arizona this week, shortly after her release from jail on a felony child abuse charge.

It’s true — there is no instruction manual for raising two teenage sons. But as Dobbins, 40, told a reporter on her Phoenix front lawn, she had certain parental tips and tricks.

She had the Bible, for example, and the verse she recited often to her sons: “Honor thy mother and father, or their days will be shortened.”

And on a particularly frustrating Easter Sunday morning, as she tried to get the 17-year-old ready for church, she had her Taser handy, too. “I said, ‘Get up! It’s Jesus day!’ ” Dobbins recalled to ABC 15.

Easter services at Greater New Zion Missionary Baptist Church had started at sunrise that day. But nearly two hours later, the teenager insisted on staying home with his friends, Dobbins said.

“He said some cuss words at me,” she told Fox 10 Phoenix. “He said that his friends don’t have to go anywhere.” The boy was no stranger to trouble, Dobbins would later tell a court; he wore an ankle bracelet and was under her legal custody.

So by way of convincing him that he needed to be in church, Dobbins said, she fetched her Taser and stood with it in her son’s bedroom.

This is where the mother’s story begins to depart from a police report obtained by 3TV/CBS 5. Dobbins said she merely sparked the device while standing in the bedroom doorway, as a warning.

“I didn’t touch him at all,” she told Fox 10. “I made the sound with the Taser.” But according to the police report, which cites both of Dobbins’s sons and their cousin as witnesses, the mother zapped the 17-year-old on his leg, leaving two small marks as evidence.

“He was like, ‘Mom! I’m calling the police,’ ” Dobbins told ABC 15. “I say, ‘You can call the police, UPS, DPS. Whoever you want to call.” The boy made good on his threat. While waiting for police to arrive, Dobbins said, she lectured the 911 dispatcher on the meaning of Easter. [/b]“I told her, ‘You need to be with Jesus right now.‘ ”[b][b][/b]

Instead, Dobbins ended up on her lawn with an officer, who after speaking to the boys informed her she would be charged with child abuse.

“He said, ‘You’re going to jail.’ I said, ‘For what?’ ” she told Fox 10. “I started crying and got in the back of the police car.”

So there was no church after all. Dobbins spent the entire day at the county jail, ABC reported. Video of her hearing shows her agreeing to supervised release, with several conditions. “You’re not to possess any weapons,” a court official warned. “Including the Taser.”

The teen eventually decided he didn’t want his mom prosecuted, according to a police report. Nevertheless, Dobbins said, her son has to live with his aunt, by court order, at least until her first hearing later this month.

“He feels bad,” she told Fox 10. “He keeps hugging me, like, ‘Mom, this is crazy.’ ”

Dobbins could not be reached for comment. But she told ABC 15 that she agrees — to a point.

Three of the pastor’s victims shared their torment and pain at the hands of the pastor at a dialogue hosted by the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural‚ Religious and Linguistic (CRL) Communities on Thursday.

The group was holding a discussion with survivors of sexual abuse at the hands of religious leaders and traditional healers. The victims told their stories in the hope that others who were abused in the same way would seek help.

They described living as if under a spell‚ afraid that they would die if they went against the pastor's wishes.

They likened the man of the cloth to Jesus Christ.

[/b]Whenever he had had sex with one of many young women in KwaZulu-Natal‚ the pastor would make a lengthy prayer to God for forgiveness.[b]

“He prayed and I was soon to find out that this was the daily prayer he would make: ‘Forgive us for our sins… Our sins… And wash us with the blood of Jesus Christ’‚” said Nonhlanhla*.

She was just 13 years old and enthusiastic about church and singing when she joined the pastor’s congregation.


By the time she was 14‚ he had noticed her vocal talent and instructed one of the church‘s women to give her his phone numbers‚ she said.

They communicated daily‚ with him questioning her about her expectations from him‚ her family life and what‚ at the time‚ was her non-existent love life.

[/b]“[Having sex with him] was my life for the next two-and-a-half years‚ except when I was on my cycle‚” said Nonhlanhla ‚ who is now 22.[b]

“He told the church about how much he had helped me. He took us out of the country [to go and sing with the other singing women] but we paid for every single thing‚” she said.

Another girl‚ Thulisile*‚ who came under the pastor's wing with her sister‚ recalled how the two of them were lured to live at his home under the pretence that he would musically train them. Weeks after they arrived at the house and after noticing the other girls’ strange behaviour towards the man they referred to as “Daddy”‚ they too each got invited to the pastor’s bedroom for a one-on-one consultation.

“He did what he wanted to do and then‚ when he was done‚ he prayed and asked God to forgive us. That made me angry. I asked [myself] what did I do? I did not sin. He was the one who sinned. I was confused‚ angry and scared of what he might do because of the powers I had seen in him‚” the now 23-year-old said.

Her sister‚ Thabisile‚ claimed that she had felt pity for the pastor because the corridor talk was that this was his weakness and he could not help himself. He needed the help of God.


On the day she was summoned to the pastor’s bedroom‚ she alleged she had received instruction from his personal assistant to clean up.

“I wanted to watch Generations that day but I could not because he had called me. The assistant told me to bath because ‘Daddy is calling you’. I prepared myself for what would happen although I hoped it would not happen‚” she said.

She bathed and went up to his room. “So I went up [stairs] clean. He told me to come to bed. He told me to put a towel on the bed where I would lie‚” the 23-year-old said.

“He was disgusted by me yet wanted to pleasure himself through me. That disturbed me. He told me to take off my skirt and I did as he said.”

She alleged that he raped her‚ telling her to move her body‚ but‚ in her youthful innocence‚ she couldn’t oblige.

“At the time he was on top of me‚ I did not feel pain for myself. I blocked everything because I did not want to get angry or to make God angry because I am angry. I felt pain for him and asked God to help him because I was told he cannot help himself. I was pleading with God: ‘Please help him’‚” said Thabile.

After her ordeal‚ the pastor offered a prayer.

“He prayed that God should have mercy on us. He recited Psalms 51. [/b]For me‚ it is hard to read that chapter. It is hard to read some chapters in the Bible because… when I read them‚ I remember what he did. I remember feeling helpless.‚” she said‚ breaking down.[b]


The mother of the two girls also addressed the commission‚ describing how she had fought to rescue her daughters‚ only for them to repeatedly run away from home‚ heading back to the pastor.

The girls said that they did so for the protection of their mother‚ whom they were told would die if she went against the will of God.

Their mother‚ Susan‚ said she had always suspected the girls had fallen victim to the pastor.

“I suspected that this was happening but I said no‚ my children were not touched. I only got confirmation that this happened yesterday‚” she said.

The woman detailed how she felt her children had viewed her as being demonic and how they had felt uncomfortable as she tried to join them in prayer.

“I feared my own kids would kill me‚” she said‚ adding that the pastor had split her family apart.

She detailed how the police had on one occasion fetched her from her house and taken her to the church where she was forced to relinquish authority of her daughters to the pastor in front of the congregation.

“That was the worst day‚” she said.

“I was told to give up on my children and I knew I would not leave there alive if I did not‚” she alleged.

Her daughters were among the scores of church members who had sang the chorus of the pastor’s innocence following his arrest.

The girls said they did so out of fear but now hoped to help others get out of his control.

White supremacist literature was found in the home of a Wisconsin man who blew himself up, the Associated Press reports.

Beaver Dam resident Benjamin Morrow was killed when his apartment blew up. Inside, rescue workers found a “homemade explosives laboratory” where he made the explosive out of peroxide. A newly uncovered search warrant for electronic records says that Morrow had documents “concerning white supremacy groups.” He also had two rifles, a scope, a handgun, hundreds of rounds of ammunition and a bullet-proof helmet and vest.

According to his loving obituary, Morrow was a devoted Baptist educated at a Christian college in Pensacola, Florida. Before blowing himself up with a homemade bomb, he worked for a pharmaceutical company and a food producer.

As a result of Morrow’s use of dangerous toxic materials, authorities had to blow up the building where he lived. The 10 other families living there were thankfully unharmed but have lost their home.

A Michigan priest got out on bail after being charged with sexually assaulting two males, including a 17-year-old boy, only to be arrested again on new charges. Now his attorney says police are guilty of “entrapment” because they used a teenager to “seduce” him.
We touched on the story of Rev. Robert DeLand (known as “Father Bob”) a week ago when reporting on a local bishop whose house was raided when he refused to cooperate with authorities during DeLand’s investigation. Now, Father Bob is under arrest again after facing a second wave of charges.

The newly brought criminal charges include second degree criminal sexual conduct, second degree criminal sexual conduct causing personal injury, controlled substance delivery, and contributing to a delinquency of a minor.

DeLand was out on bond when he was arrested just two days ago, but the most surprising element of the latest incident is the defense DeLand’s lawyer, Alan Crawford, put forth: he says his client was set up by police who coached a teen to “seduce” the priest.

[/b]The fact that Father Robert Deland is facing any charges is outright appalling. This investigation, these cases, are nothing more than a witch hunt. I am beyond shocked, not at what Father Deland did, but the manner in which the police department operated. There is no criminal activity. There is no criminal intent. This is a man of God that was doing his job of serving his community and helping those in need.

Furthermore, this case is the text book definition of entrapment. The police, of all people sent a troubled high school student undercover, that was already on probation, and attempted to use this teenager to seduce Father Deland.

The teenager and his family jumped at the opportunity because they viewed this as a pay day. It’s obvious, they were only concerned with money and rising from their current economic situation. They wasted no time hiring an attorney and filing a civil suit in federal court. For the family this is only about money.[b]

As for the second victim, Crawford, speaking on behalf of DeLand, said his claims are “just as baseless.”

[/b]This an individual that had a .27 BAC and is saying whatever he can to also improve his financial situation.[b]

For Father Bob and his attorney, it’s all about blaming the victims. If it isn’t a setup by police, it’s excessive inebriation that caused the abuse. Crawford says the indictment is an “injustice” and that his client will be exonerated, but the evidence suggests otherwise. My hunch is that Father Bob won’t be able to hurt any other kids for quite some time.

William L. Kerr is facing years in prison after he pleaded guilty to seven charges involving possession of child pornography and aggravated sexual battery.

Kerr, 75, appeared in Staunton Circuit Court on Tuesday afternoon.

The Staunton man pleaded guilty to one count of possession of child pornography and six counts of aggravated sexual battery. He faces up to 125 years in prison.

Nearly 45 other charges, including forcible sodomy, possession of child pornography and aggravated sexual battery, were not prosecuted.

According to evidence presented by Anne Reed, the chief deputy commonwealth's attorney for Staunton, between 1990 and 2004, Kerr invited several young girls ranging in ages 7 to 11 back to his Staunton home. [/b]"Kerr would frequently invite children over to his house," Reed said. "The defendant would get the girls alone."[b]

But, to these children, he served as an authority figure and their Sunday school teacher at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Parish in Staunton. During Reed's stipulation, she said many of the girls were fearful to come forward and tell someone about the abuse.

Reed said the abused children, now adults, attended St. Francis with their families.

"The defendant was trusted by her parents, who worked in the church," Reed said of one of the victims. [/b]"At the age of 9 years old, the defendant started to sexually abuse her while she was at his residence.[b]

"She was afraid to say anything that was happening to her out of fear of hurting the defendant's wife, whom she cared for very much as well as concern of upsetting her parents," Reed continued. "It was not until several years later that she was able to disclose what had happened and seek counseling." Many of the victim's stories were similar. Kerr would sit beside some victims in the basement of his residence and handle them under their clothes, according to Reed.

Reed described other stories from the victims, including one who was 7 when Kerr began molesting her. According to Reed, the defendant would give her candy or toys to play what he called the "bubble game," code words for MouthAction.

During a search of Kerr's home, Staunton Police seized several computers that contained child pornography, as well as a hidden VHS tape and several photo slides of juvenile girls that Reed described as "child erotica."

Kerr's computer history also showed searches that included [b][/b]"little girl pee hole," "old man molesting little girl," "little girls being touched" and "little girl rubbing genitals," [b][/b]Reed said.

Kerr will be sentenced at 1 p.m. May 8 in Staunton Circuit Court.

Another so-called holy man has failed to live up to his church’s supposedly divine moral code.

A former Michigan pastor has reportedly admitted to posing as a teenager online to convince underage girls to perform sexual acts and show their bodies in video chats. Prosecutors say Jackie Douglas Woodburn, who was an associate pastor at Colonial Woods Missionary Church in Port Huron before retiring earlier this year, was “seeking to sexually exploit minor teenage and preteen girls.” Woodburn admitted to using a pseudonym to seek teen girls in a chatroom, according to the Detroit News.

Among the more than 50 victims whom authorities identified was a 13-year-old Texas girl who recalled chatting with someone she met online in 2016 using the handle “JD Walker” and claiming to be a teenager, the document said. He requested sexually explicit photos and asked her to perform similar acts on a web camera, she told officials in an interview. Identifying Woodburn through his IP address and internet provider, investigators executed a search warrant in February at the 63-year-old’s St. Clair County home. Woodburn said he used the JD name on the website and sought teen girls there, the court filing claims. One of the two computers that law enforcement seized from his residence revealed at least 70,000 Skype chat messages between “jd windwalker” and others — most appearing to be with minors, including the Texas teen, an FBI special agent wrote.

You read that right. This now-retired pastor had at least 70,000 Skype messages, mostly with minor children as young as 13, dating back to when he was an active pastor. I’m betting none of that went into his sermons when he was presenting himself as a man of God and an authority on all things moral and ethical.To make matters worse, Woodburn was described by his former church as a married father of three and Air Force veteran.

Jack Woodburn is the director of Colonial Woods Christian Counseling Center, and is currently specializing in working with pastors, missionaries and those in full-time Christian Ministry. Jack has been married to his wife since 1974. They have three children. Woodburn is a sinner by his own church’s standards, as well as by the standards of our justice system. That’s why he has been charged with producing child pornography and with coercing a minor to engage in sexually explicit conduct.

There’s no telling if this type of sexual abuse against children extended into Woodburn’s activities at the church, but with this amount of publicity it wouldn’t be surprising if other victims decide to speak out. And it isn’t unheard of for prosecutors to add more charges at a later date. Of course, when it comes to his faith, Woodburn could always just repent and be forgiven for his crimes. Good thing the courts don’t work that way.

Two nuns have been arrested in Colombia for allegedly torturing upward of 60 children under their care at a home dubbed a hell house by neighbors and local media.

Sor Ines Perez and Rosa Elivra Trochez Joagui ran the Santa Clara Rebirth Home in the southwest Colombian city of Popayan. According to authorities, children in their care were repeatedly burned on their hands and had their heads shoved in toilets as a form of punishment. Authorities began an investigation after neighbors heard the children screaming and called police, according to El Tiempo.

Both nuns have denied the charges of aggravated torture, with the alleged crimes dating between 2014 and 2017. The scores of children who lived at the home have all been relocated to other welfare sites, according to the country's Office of Attorney General.
According to El Tiempo, the nuns' organization had already been closed once before, but had been allowed to reopen. In a statement to the paper, Perez said conditions at the home were exacerbated by the inadequate resources provided by the Colombian Institute of Family Well-Being (ICBF), a public youth welfare agency. The ICBF did not immediately return Newsweek's request for comment.
There are approximately 260,000 people living in overwhelmingly Catholic Popayan, the capital of the department of Cauca. The Colombian Evangelical Council has said 85 percent of the region follows the teachings of Catholicism, while the Catholic Bishops’ Conference has put the number a smidge higher at 90 percent.

It’s unclear how many children each year are abused in Colombia. Combating the multiple sources of violence in the country is a formidable obstacle for child welfare organizations, according to UNICEF.

“The biggest challenge that Colombia faces is that of violence,” according to Paul Martin, the UNICEF representative in Colombia. “Domestic violence, violence at school, street violence. It is a country completely traumatized by violence.”

The gunman who burst through an Oklahoma restaurant and opened fire at random, before being fatally shot by two armed citizens, left a troubling digital footprint on social media, documenting his life and what he believed to be the devil following him.

Oklahoma City police say they didn't have any recent reports about Alex Tilghman and the 28-year-old wasn't on their radar. Officers aren't aware of any documented mental illness but a series of concerning videos posted over the last month on YouTube could have been a plea for help.

Oklahoma City Police officer Megan Morgan confirmed to USA TODAY that a photo of Tilghman used on his Facebook and YouTube accounts was indeed the suspected gunman in the shooting. Police said they are investigating the videos.

Tilghman had on ear muffs like those supplied at shooting ranges and wore protective glasses when he opened fire at Louie's Grill & Bar on Thursday. He was armed with a handgun and shot three people, including a mother and her daughter, Oklahoma City Police Captain Bo Mathews said.
The shooting could have continued if it weren't for two men who ran out to their vehicles and grabbed handguns locked in their trunks, Mathews said. The men, Juan Carlos Nazario, 35, and Bryan Whittle, 39, shot and killed the gunman in the parking lot, police said
In a video titled 'Please contact me if you're real' on April 27, Tilghman last posted to YouTube before the shooting. He said he's being haunted by demons and is under attack.

"My life is in danger," he says at one point in the four-minute video. He also said, "Satan is after me."

While sitting in what appears to be a living room, Tilghman details tapping, cracking and loud booms that he's heard in his home, adding everyone lives in a matrix and "the devil is after my (expletive) ass."

He includes a plea for "real people" to contact him — even posting his personal phone number — because he's under a "demonic attack."

"I'm feeling really bad right now," he said. "I'm super stressed."

In another video titled "How God has transformed me" posted on April 26, Tilghman details the ups and downs of findings jobs and being homeless but finding faith in God. He said he bounced around from his mother and father's homes but moved out after he discovered they weren't real humans, but rather demons, he says.

He said he worked at an auto auction company but left after "Satan striked" and caused his coworkers to "gang up" on him. He said one of his co-workers suggested he needed counseling and others chimed in and started name-calling.

A Baptist pastor charged earlier this year with three counts of Sexual Abuse involving two children is now charged with molesting a teenager.

Besides the earlier cases that investigators say involve boys under the age of 12, Williamson was most recently charged with illegally touching a another boy under the age of 12.

In the latest case, investigators say he “pushed in on the victim’s private parts in an effort to make him sit down.” He previously was charged with brushing against clothing in the genital area of two boys, one of them twice.

Houston County Sheriff Donald Valenza said the first three incidents occurred at a summer church camp last year. Investigators say the latest arrest involves molestation that occurred between August and September of 2017.

Williamson was terminated as children’s pastor at Mount Gilead Baptist Church immediately following his arrest in March. The church’s senior pastor, Dr. Bradley Rushing, said upon receiving a complaint regarding Williamson’s behavior in January he was placed on administrative leave and the church notified authorities.

Williamson is married and has seven children, according to his attorney Thomas Smith.

He has a court hearing scheduled next month and is free on bond.

An Australian archbishop convicted of concealing child sex abuse by a fellow priest will step down from his position.
Archbishop of Adelaide Philip Wilson announced his decision on Wednesday, the day after he was found guilty of concealing the abuse of altar boys by a pedophile priest colleague.
Wilson, who is the highest ranking Catholic official globally to be convicted of the offense and faces up to two years in prison, said he will stand aside on Friday.

"It is appropriate that, in the light of some of his Honour's findings, I stand aside from my duties as Archbishop," he said in a statement.
"If at any point in time it becomes necessary or appropriate for me to take more formal steps, including by resigning as Archbishop, then I will do so," he added.
Wilson said that he is considering the reason's for the judgment and did not indicate whether he would appeal.
The 67-year-old was found guilty of having concealed the abuse of Father James Fletcher in the state of New South Wales in the 1970s .
Wilson was a junior priest when Fletcher, a Catholic priest based in the Hunter Valley, abused the altar boys. Wilson was charged in 2015 with failing to report Fletcher's abuse to police.
Fletcher died in prison in 2006, a year after being found guilty of eight counts of child abuse and sentenced to 10 years.
The Newcastle court ruled on Tuesday that the boys had told Wilson about the abuse and that he had failed to report it as he wanted to protect the church's reputation.
Wilson is expected to be sentenced by the court in June.

A former Catholic priest with Chicago ties is facing criminal charges for the first time, nearly two decades after he resigned from his post amid several allegations of child sex abuse.

The case that eventually landed 56-year-old Kenneth Lewis in the Leighton Criminal Court Building on Saturday in Chicago stems from a decade-old allegation of child molestation in an Evanston hotel room, according to a police source in the northern suburb.

In that incident, “Father Ken,” a former pastor in Tulsa, Oklahoma, is accused of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old boy on a trip in late July 2001, in a hotel at 1501 Sherman Ave., the Evanston police source told the Chicago Sun-Times. The hotel at that address is now the Holiday Inn Chicago North.

The boy’s parents filed a report with Tulsa police in June 2004, nearly three years after the alleged assault. Authorities in Oklahoma referred the case to Evanston police, and now, 14 years later, Lewis has been criminally charged in the case.
Evanston authorities submitted a felony charge in December 2017 to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. Two days after Christmas, Cook County Judge Michael J. Hood issued a nationwide $100,000 warrant for Lewis’ arrest, court records show.

Though the former Tulsa pastor’s permanent address has been in Arvada, Colorado, for the past three years, Lewis wasn’t in the country until his arrest this month. From early July 2017 until May 8, Lewis was living in Ecuador, according to Cook County prosecutors. Lewis has been in the United States for less than 100 days since January 2017, prosecutors said. It’s not clear why he was living for nearly a year and a half in the South American country.

In late March, U.S. officials were flagged when Lewis purchased a plane ticket from Ecuador to Atlanta, Georgia, according to the Evanston police source. When Lewis arrived in Atlanta on May 9, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security detained him, and he was brought back to the Chicago area nine days later.

On Friday morning, Lewis was taken into Evanston police custody and charged with one felony count of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, the police source said.

The one-story, low-slung building used to be St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. William E. 'Tim' Smith Jr. identified himself as the pastor of a church in Palmer. He was also found in possession of legend and Schedule II prescription drugs.

"This is very disturbing and heartbreaking," Grundy County Sheriff Clint Shrum, said. Bond has not been set.

Smith Jr. has an initial court date of July 12.

A prominent leader of a controversial Western North Carolina church is accused of devising a scheme that cheated taxpayers out of tens of thousands of dollars in unemployment benefits.

Kent Covington of Rutherfordton, a top minister in the Word of Faith Fellowship church, was indicted Thursday by a federal grand jury on a charge of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

Over five years, according to the indictment, Covington and "co-conspirators" filed more than $250,000 in phony unemployment claims for employees who kept working for companies owned by Word of Faith members.

Starting in 2008, the indictment said, Covington masterminded a scheme to help his plastics manufacturing company survive the recession by laying off his work force, applying for unemployment benefits for his employees, then forcing them to keep working.
For the next five years, taxpayers and not Covington paid the employees' salaries, according top the indictment.

The indictment also accuses Covington of using his influence as a Word of Faith leader to force the other church members who worked for his Diverse Corporate Technologies Inc., to participate in the conspiracy.

Diane McKinny, a Covington employee and fellow Word of Faith member, also was named in the indictment and accused of filing fraudulent paperwork to support the unemployment claims.

According to the indictment, Covington and McKinny obtained more than six months of free labor for Covington's company, paid for by the government instead of the business.

The 63-year-old Covington also is accused of passing on the blueprint of his scheme to other church members who owned companies struggling through the recession. T

Two church members who implemented the scheme were the father-and-son podiatry team of Jason and Jerry Gross, who began laying off employees at Foot & Ankle Center of the Carolinas in 2009, prosecutors said.

A third man has been charged with child sexual abuse in connection with a Utah doomsday group that believed in polygamy and took child brides.

Robert Shane Roe, 34, of Castro, California, met the two founders of the group in a Facebook discussion group last year and traveled out to Utah where he was given a "bride" — a 5-year-old girl related to one of the men, said Sanpete County Attorney Kevin Daniels.

Investigators knew previously that Roe was involved in the group, but the girl only recently revealed what happened when she was alone with him, the prosecutor said.

[/b]Roe was charged Thursday with sodomy of a child, which authorities say took place in August 2017.[b] No attorney is listed in court documents for Roe.

Daniels said Roe acknowledges being alone with the girl but denies abusing her.

She is the third girl victimized by men in the group, Daniels said.
The group's two founders — Samuel W. Shaffer, 34, and John Coltharp, 34 — formed a group called the Knights of the Crystal Blade based on arcane Mormon ideas long abandoned by the mainstream church.

Each man secretly married two girls, ages 4 through 8, prosecutors have said. Each man married a relative of the other, according to court documents.

Coltharp has pleaded not guilty to sodomy and child bigamy charges. He's scheduled to be back in court Wednesday in Manti.
The two men were charged after sheriff's deputies descended on a makeshift compound made out of shipping containers in the Southern Utah desert about 275 miles south of Salt Lake City. Police arrived with helicopters and dogs in December, after the mother of two of the girls reported them missing, along with two of her sons.

The men had taken the children there months before in preparation for an apocalypse or in hopes of gaining followers, authorities said.

The boys were found in the makeshift compound, but it took police another day to find the girls in the barrels and trailer.

Shaffer said at his sentencing that he put the girls in the containers to protect them from the winter weather, and he was glad that the girl spoke out.

The Lafayette Diocese priest accused of sexually abusing a teenager turned himself in Wednesday to the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office, 10 days after the diocese publicly disclosed the allegation.

Michael Guidry, 75, confessed to assaulting the victim, who was 16 at the time, after serving the boy alcohol, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The abuse occurred at Guidry’s home in Morrow, authorities said.

Guidry was released after posting $21,500 bond, according to Maj. Eddie Thibodeaux. Guidry faces one count of molestation of a juvenile and one count of contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.
The current age of the victim and year of the incident was not clear as of Wednesday morning, although Bishop J. Douglas Deshotel said in a June 4 news conference the victim is now an adult.

The incident occurred within the past nine years, when Guidry became pastor of St. Peter Church in Morrow, Deshotel said, adding that Guidry has been a priest for nearly five decades.

Deshotel said the allegation involved a single incident, and he said he was not aware of any other allegations against Guidry or any other priests serving in the diocese.

In a statement Thursday, Deshotel said he was “deeply saddened to learn of the arrest and subsequent confession of Father Michael Guidry.”

“I offer my prayers, support and sincere apology to the victim and his family,” Deshotel said in the statement.
Guidry was placed on paid leave when the allegation surfaced, Deshotel said at the news conference earlier this month. A diocese spokeswoman said Thursday that Guidry “immediately vacated the rectory” once he was placed on leave.

Guidry gave a Rayne address as his home address during booking. No one answered the door at that address on Thursday morning. A neighbor said the home belonged to Guidry’s parents but did not want to comment further.

Guidry’s arrest comes 14 years after former Bishop Michael Jarrell disclosed that the diocese and its insurers paid out $24.4 million to 123 individuals to settle sexual abuse claims that began in the 1980s. There were 15 accused priests, but the diocese has never disclosed their names.
Deshotel would not commit to releasing the names of the 15 priests during the June 4 news conference. In his statement Thursday, Deshotel emphasized the diocese’s swift action upon learning of the allegation, as part of “safe environment” protocols to protect children from abuse.

“As soon as this event was known, the Diocese initiated an investigation, placed Father Guidry on administrative leave and contacted law enforcement,” Deshotel said in the statement.

Police in West Virginia say a man who said he was trying to baptize his wife and children in a bathtub has been charged with trying to drown them.

News outlets report 36-year-old Leslie Kelly of Chapmanville was charged last week with attempted murder, domestic battery and child abuse creating the risk of serious injury.
The Logan County Sheriff’s Office says in a news release that deputies found Kelly’s wife outside the home soaking wet. She says Kelly held her and the children under water.

Deputy Barry Mynes Jr. says Kelly repeatedly said he was trying to baptize his family and that God told him to do it.

Kelly is being held in the Southwestern Regional Jail on $100,000 bond. Jail records didn’t indicate whether he has an attorney.

A Tennessee pastor is being accused of raping a 17-year-old girl.

James “Ronnie” Messer, 46, was arrested after the girl’s family reported him to authorities claiming he took the 17-year-old to the Crossway Worship Center after their plans to go swimming fell through.

The girl’s sister alleged the the pastor led the teen through the center’s rear entrance to a room, where he then raped her.

Messer told police he thought the encounter with the underage girl was consensual.

Messer has since been released on bond.

HEADLINE:Southern Baptist officials knew of sexual abuse allegations 11 years before leader’s arrest!!!

The missionary arm of the Southern Baptist Convention knew about allegations against Southern Baptist leader Mark Aderholt more than 10 years before he was arrested July 3 on charges that he sexually assaulted a 16-year-old girl, according to police records, emails and an internal investigation from the organization.

In 2007, the International Mission Board conducted an investigation into allegations that Aderholt had a sexual relationship with the girl while he was a 25-year-old student at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth. At the time of the investigation, Aderholt was one of the more prolific missionaries with the Mission Board, which has sent Southern Baptists around the globe for more than a century.
The International Mission Board did not report the allegations to authorities.

The Mission Board conducted a two-day interview with his accuser, Anne Marie Miller — the same woman who brought criminal charges against Aderholt more than a decade later in Texas in October 2007. Miller supplied the Star-Telegram with a transcript of the interviews. Miller, then 27, got the results of the investigation a month later.

A Canyon County man is accused of sexually abusing four children, ages 1 to 13, over two decades.

Lester Kester, 48, was arrested Wednesday on four felony counts of lewd conduct with a child younger than 16. Court records show the alleged crimes occurred between 1997 and 2018.

Sarah Kester, Lester Kester’s 50-year-old wife, allegedly knew about the sexual abuse and still left one of the children with Lester Kester, according to court records. She is charged with felony injury to a child.

One of Lester Kester’s suspected victims is believed to have been abused for a full decade, from ages 3 to 13. Two others might have been abused for even longer, from ages 1 to 13. The fourth told investigators of abuse at the ages of 12 and 13, according to court records.

The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare’s Children and Family Services contacted the Canyon County Sheriff’s Office on June 21 and informed detectives that a young girl had been molested. Three other suspected victims have subsequently come forward. One told police she was sexually abused as recently as 2016.

During an interview with law enforcement on July 11, Sarah Kester admitted to detectives that she learned of Lester’s actions approximately 17 years ago, and again when she was confronted by them approximately three years ago, according to a Canyon County Sheriff’s Office news release.

[/b]“Sarah Lester told detectives that she didn’t report the abuse because it was against her belief system to involve agencies such as law enforcement, child protection services, or counseling services” into personal matters,[b] according to the release. “Instead, she said she attempted to protect her children through [/b]praying for ‘the demon’ to leave Lester and attempting to keep him busy with other tasks.” [b]

His bond is set at $500,000. Sarah Kester’s bond is set at $25,000. On Friday, they both remained in custody at the Canyon County jail.

Sarah Kester’s next court appearance is set for July 26; Lester Kester’s next appearance is not set, according to online schedules.

If convicted, each count of lewd conduct is punishable by up to life in prison. Felony injury to a child is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

The parents of a twin girl who died hours after a home birth attended by dozens of people from the faith-healing Followers of Christ Church pleaded guilty Monday to negligent homicide and criminal mistreatment.

It marked the fifth criminal case in Clackamas County after a child's death in the church community over the last nine years but the first to end in a plea deal. The mother, Sarah Elaine Mitchell, 25, and father, Travis Lee Mitchell, 22, each were sentenced to prison for six years and eight months.

In an unusual development, the Mitchells not only acknowledged their failure to provide necessary medical care for their newborn but also said in a statement read aloud by one of their lawyers that "everyone in the church should always seek adequate medical care for our children.''

Sarah and Travis Mitchell are members of the Followers of Christ, which traces its origin to the Pentecostal movement of the late 19th century. Sarah Mitchell is a granddaughter of the church founder, Walter White. Her father is also named Walter White.
Sarah Mitchell's father signed the statement, which will be prominently posted inside the church for all to read, under the terms of the plea agreement.

The couple's newborn, Ginnifer, died March 5, 2017, from complications of premature birth. Her lungs appeared to be "airless'' and she suffered from acute respiratory distress syndrome, the state medical examiner found.

A former Greeley pastor has been arrested on child sexual assault charges for engaging in an intimate relationship with an underage girl 20 years his junior.

Nison Yovani Lemus-Alvarez, 37, formerly the congregation leader of La Iglesia De Restoration Church, 3080 29th St., is charged with one count each of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust and sexual assault on a child with a pattern of abuse, both felonies. The charges stem from an inappropriate relationship Lemus-Alvarez allegedly had with an underage member of his congregation who also volunteered for the church.

An investigation into Lemus-Alvarez first began in October 2017 when the victim, then 16 years old, told her mother she had been kissing her pastor and the two had been exchanging late night text messages for months. Lemus-Alvarez, a married man with children, told the victim he had fallen in love with her, according to court records.

But the victim refused to cooperate with officers when her mother made the allegations a police matter. The investigation was suspended in November 2017.

The victim later changed her mind and the case was re-opened in April. Apparently, the rumor mill had started to spin and, in an effort to protect his reputation, Lemus-Alvarez began bad-mouthing the victim to certain members of the congregation, records stated.

When confronted by the victim's family and the church's head pastor, David Lopez of Houston, Lemus-Alvarez admitted to having an inappropriate relationship with the underage girl. He has since been removed as a pastor at La Iglesia De Restoration.

Lemus-Alvarez was arrested July 9 at his home in the 700 block of 19th Avenue and remains in custody at Weld County Jail on $75,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear at 1 p.m. Aug. 2 for a disposition hearing in Weld District Court.

CHESTER, Va. (AP) — A former Virginia youth pastor was sentenced to 58 years in prison for killing his wife, stepdaughter and the stepdaughter’s boyfriend last Thanksgiving.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported Wednesday that 59-year-old Christopher R. Gattis pleaded guilty to first-degree murder.

Investigators learned Gattis had issues with 58-year-old Jeanett L. Gattis’ children. He didn’t want 30-year-old Candice L. Kunze or her boyfriend, 36-year-old Andrew Buthorn, staying for long.
Following multiple arguments, Gattis’ wife asked his adult nephew to hide a gun, saying she was afraid Gattis would use it.

He walked into their kitchen Thanksgiving night with a loaded pistol while his family played a board game and began firing.

Gattis initially told police he was threatened, saying “they all came after me.”

All three died of gunshot wounds to the back.

The step-father of a South Florida teen girl was arrested Saturday after police say [/b]he sexually assaulted his 13-year-old step-daughter for a year, police say.[b]

The arrest of Avo Roker was made about a week [/b]after his preacher, 40-year-old Ricardo Strachan, was placed behind bars for molesting the same girl.[b] Police say Roker introduced Strachan to the girl at church and that the duo threatened to kill her and conduct voodoo rituals on her family if she told anybody.

Both men were booked into Broward County Jail. Roker was charged with three counts of sexual assault by a person with custodial authority on a victim between the ages of 12 and 18. Strachan, who used to preach at The Prophetic Worshippers International Church, was charged with one count of lewd and lascivious battery on a minor between the ages of 12 and 16 years old.

According to a police report, Strachen had sex with the girl more than 36 times either in the parking lot of a high school during school hours or at a nearby motel between January to December of 2016.
Strachen is also accused of forcing the teen to steal clothes from her family-- items that would ultimately be used in voodoo rituals if she went to the authorities, the report said, noting that he told the girl his wife was an armed police officer.

Documents outlining Roker’s arrest were not immediately available Sunday, Lauderhill police told the Miami Herald. However police say Roker had sex with his step-daughter more than 65 times from December 2015 to December 2016.

Jail records show he’s being held on no bond while Strachen is being held on $100,000 bond.

An associate pastor who told police he kept child porn on his computer as part of research for “a possible lesson involving Cupid, love and human trafficking” has been sentenced to eight years’ probation.

James Rankin, 79, also was ordered by Judge Mollee B. Westfall to post a sign at his Hurst home that says, “A person on probation for a child sex offense lives here.”

Rankin pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography, a third degree felony, in a plea agreement with prosecutors last week. He faced a maximum of 10 years in prison. He was also fined $800.

Rankin had been associate pastor at Bellevue Baptist Church in Hurst but is no longer associated with it, said a woman who answered the phone there Wednesday morning.

“We probably had a shot in a trial,” said Wes Ball of Arlington, Rankin’s attorney. “But we elected to take the plea deal. I think it was a fair resolution”

But Ball was highly critical of the sign requirement, saying he remembers when on occasion then-Judge Sharen Wilson made it a condition of probation for sex offenders. Wilson is now the Tarrant County district attorney.

“I don’t see the sense of it,” Ball said Wednesday. “If he’s a risk he belongs in prison, but he’s not in prison. He’s a low risk. Let him go on with his life on probation.”


Prosecutors declined to comment.

As part of the plea agreement, Rankin agreed that an assessment would be conducted on him to determine the conditions of his community supervision. Some of those conditions may include electronic monitoring, curfew, psychological/sexual evaluations and no contact with children under the age of 17.

On the day he was sentenced, Rankin agreed to some standard conditions of probation. Those conditions were not available Wednesday.

Regarding the sign, Rankin must contract with a vendor selected by the court. The sign shall be no less than 16 inches high and no less than 32 inches wide. It must be constructed with weather-resistant and reflective material. All lettering must be no less than 2 1/2 inches tall. Rankin is responsible for the sign’s maintenance and replacement.
The former associate pastor was arrested in March 2017 after employees at Best Buy alerted police that they had found what they believed was child porn on a computer brought in for repair by Rankin.

Police arrived at the store to investigate and then summoned Rankin. He gave police permission to look through computer files where they observed images of nude children between the ages of 8 and 10 on an Apple iMac, according to a search warrant.

Rankin told police he kept the child porn “to remind himself of what other people like to look at,” according to the warrant.

[/b]Police found at least 50 images of children engaging in pornography,[b] some of which appeared to be “home-made quality,” according to the warrant.

Church officials told police Rankin did not use or have access to a church computer, but brought his own laptop.
