One important element of a Curriculum Vitae (CV) or Resume is the email address. It is a vital contact element that prospective employers (recruiters) need to be able to communicate with you. Among many correspondences that recruiters may send to you via email is interview invitation.

In Nigeria today unfortunately, most graduates have email addresses but neither check their mails nor reply promptly to correspondences that come in via the mail. Mails stay unattended for days in their mailboxes; prospective employers wait for prolonged periods to receive replies to job correspondences that are often not forthcoming and gradually, great job opportunities get lost. In all however, there are two major reasons why it is greatly important for graduates (job seekers especially) to attend to their mails and reply promptly. These are:

RECRUITERS WANT PROMPT REPLIES SO THEY CAN CONCLUDE RECRUITMENT ON TIME

As is the case with most recruiters, the process of recruiting new staff is time-bound and must be concluded within the set time limit so that newly recruited staff can settle in on time and begin to contribute to the growth of the company. The implication of this is that recruiters do not have time to waste on waiting for job seekers who are not responding to correspondences on time. Because there is a large pool of applicants meanwhile, they cannot give such prominence to one applicant that they will begin to seek other means of communicating when mails are not replied.

RESPONSE TO MAILS IS A TEST OF APPLICANT'S COMMUNICATION ABILITY
When recruiters communicate with prospective employees (applicants) by mail, they also want to see how well an applicant will communicate by mail. They want to see the applicant’s ability to execute written communication and respond to same in a timely manner. The applicant who does not reply on time give an impression that he is not capable of timely communication and cannot be trusted with workplace responsibilities.

So, when you treat your email correspondences as though they do not matter, remember that you may be putting great job opportunities on the line; and in this age of technology, not responding to your mails might mean you are jeopardizing up to 85% of the employment opportunities that would ordinarily have been available to you.

I recommend you do the following to be able to attend to your mails on time:

1. Make sure your email accounts are logged in on your mobile device so you have seamless access.
2. Ensure that you use secure, popular and effective mail servers e.g. Gmail and Yahoo so that your mails do not experience any abnormal delay.
3. Make a habit of responding to your mails once they come in without procrastination.

Whatever you do and whatever job you apply for, make sure you are able to respond to communications from your prospective employers promptly; this could be the major factor that will greatly boost your chances of securing your dream job.

Cheers to your successful job search.
