Brazilian Ex-President, Lula, Surrenders To Police, Begins 12-year Jail Term by BrainnewsRadio(f): 4:23pm On Apr 08, 2018
Brazil’s leading TV network Globo said former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has surrendered to police in order to start serving a 12-year sentence for corruption as ordered by the court.

Lula had ignored the deadline given by the court, which expired on Friday. But today after attending an impromptu mass for his late wife, he was able to walk out of the metalworkers’ union building near Sao Paulo where he had spent two days holed up, and was taken away in a convoy of black police cars.

He will be taken by police to a jail cell in the southern city of Curitiba, where he will begin serving his 12-year sentence.

An earlier attempt to leave was blocked by a crowd of supporters who opposed his arrest.

Before giving up to the police, Lula was surrounded by hundreds of diehard supporters, including leaders of his Workers Party, union workers and activists, in the industrial suburb of Sao Paulo where his political career began as a union official.

The AFP reported the chaotic moments before the former president’s surrender to the law.

According to the report, the crowd of supporters mobbed his car and prevented him from leaving.

In chaotic scenes, scores of leftist activists swarmed around his car and blocked the gate at the metalworkers’ union building in Sao Bernardo do Campo, near Sao Paulo, forcing the 72-year-old two-term president to retreat.
He had been on his way out of the building to hand himself in to police. But as soon as Lula got into the gray vehicle, activists pushed against the metal gates, so that they could not be opened, almost knocking them down.

Meanwhile, another group attempted to mob the car itself.

Finally, Lula exited the car, squeezing through the tightly packed crowd and pausing to embrace one man, before returning into the metalworkers’ union building where he has been holed up for the past two days.

Lula was ordered to surrender to police by Friday but missed the deadline while his lawyers pursued appeals in the courts.

Earlier Saturday, he told several thousand of his supporters at the union building that he was innocent but would accept arrest.

He was due to be taken to the southern city of Curitiba to start serving a 12-year sentence for taking a luxury apartment as a bribe from a construction company.

Addressing supporters, an emotional and combative Lula called himself “an outraged citizen” over his conviction. He said that Brazil’s top anti-corruption judge, Sergio Moro, “lied” about him being given the apartment by a big construction firm as a kickback.

“I am the only human being to be put on trial for an apartment which does not belong to me,” he said.

That is how a decent country does it. Thieving politicians do not become senators, or something. Instead, they get a prison number and that is it for the next, in this case, 12 years.

It is not as if the former president was accused of a high profile assassination plot or murder o, neither did he commit war crimes or genocide while he was in power. he just looted funds and justice was brought upon him ha!.

When will the laws guiding this country be made effective and carried out without bias on these corrupt politicians.

That's the difference between a country moving up in the comity of nations and Nigeria being a cesspool of corruption and nepotism.

Mom--Buhari my son what is your problem why are you disturbing

Old Man--is his name Buhari? Yes just leave him am not adjusting you should live him to continue crying it's good for his health grin

Just a luxury apartment Nigeria and some African countries still have a long way to go.

That must be a country where the rule of law is held sacrosanct and where the prosecuting agency does not need to wait for the body language of anyone.

All present and past governors and presidents should thank their stars that they aren't Brazilians. It could have been life imprisonment or outright execution for some of them.

Good Justice to the ordinary people of Brazil and a sweet victory to the people of the world who seek equal opportunity and a fair deal for all of humanity.

until leaders are held accountable for their actions and inactions while in office, no society will experience meaningful progress.
For Nigeria to progress, our justice system must rise above individuals, tribe and religion.

We the people must insist that anyone who abuse trust must face the legal consequence of their action. We must learn to support the justice system in holding our leaders accountable, no matter the God they worship or the Language they speak.

Mama Piss just begged EFCC for plea bargain. That implies that she has admitted looting and stealing our money. If you arrest her now Ijaw militants will start bombing pipes and destroying their environment thinking that they are fighting Buhari.

The convicted Brazilian ex- president did not say that there are other corrupt people so he should not be prosecuted until all other corrupt people are prosecuted. Instead, he said he is innocent. Some useless people have been saying that EFCC should not prosecute PDP looters until APC thieves ate prosecuted, I expect them to go and tell that to the judges. Useless wailing wailers.

That is why no one in govt, past or present, is going to get prosecuted.

Nigerians have not grapsed that it is in their interest that corrupt people should go to jail.

Till they do that, the war against high class political corruption is dead on arrival.
