LJUBLJANA (Slovenia), April 18 (SeeNews) - Slovenian state-owned railway company Slovenske Zeleznice said on Wednesday it has signed a 169 million euro ($209.4 million) deal to purchase 26 new passenger trains from Swiss company Stadler Rail.

The "historic deal", which is aimed at modernizing Slovenia's passenger rail service, was signed on Tuesday, Slovenske Zeleznice said in a statement.

The purchased trains include 10 single-decker multi-system trains, 10 double-decker single-system trains, five diesel passenger trains and one single-decker electric train.

The new trains will begin carrying passengers in a year and a half.

The Minister for Transport, Rotimi Amaechi has stated that the Federal Government need the sum of $40 billion for completion and kicking ff of new railway projects.

The Minister who spoke while addressing journalists at the Inauguration of new coaches at the Rigasa Train Station in Kaduna State said that although the Federal Government was short of funds a the moment, negotiations has commenced in that regard.

"We will do everything possible to ensure that we complete the Lagos-Ibadan railway. We are already negotiating with contractors who will fund the project. If we are able to complete the arrangements, again taking into consideration the Nigerian Law, we will start many of them this year.

"We need between $36 billion and $40 billion. Only God knows where we are going to get it. But I like to apply what I did as Rivers State governor. Whenever there is project, we put on the table how much we have, we will just award the contract believing that God will do it for us.

"You will say that it is naive but at the end of the day, we got the money to pay the constructors".

Meanwhile, speaking on Railways, The President Muhammadu Buhari has said that for 2018, ambitious targets have been set. The President had stated this during his New Year Speech to the Nation stating that construction of the Kano to Kaduna railway segment is expected to commence this year and reach Kaduna by the end of 2019.

He revealed that negotiations are also advanced for the construction of other railway lines, firstly from Kano to Maradi in Niger Republic passing through Kazaure, Daura, Katsina, Jibia to Maradi.

"By the end of 2021 the two ends will be joined so that we will have standard gauge railway across the main North-South trading route.

Poor thinking....!!!
Abandoned Rivers Monorail project comes to mind

From the picture below partly displaying the abandoned Rivers Monorail project, those protesters had walked for 10min past the end of the monorail project and would walk for just 15 mins to get to the beginning making a total of 25 mins walk for a project that had gulped over N50b of TAX payer's money.

Amaechi would just award contract without a proper NEEDS ASSESSMENT and BUDGETARY IMPLICATION...!!!

So many brain dead ediots on nairaland these days.

This dolt doesn't even the difference between constructing entire rail lines + train coaches and just buying train coaches.

Its like saying we need 5 billion to build lagos ibadan express way and put some cars on it. Then the ediot say, but ghana bought 50 cars with just 3 million.

Mumu.

I believe what the Op is trying to point out is that if Slovenia is spending $209m just on train, how come Amaechi is budgeting a paltry sum for kicking off of new rail projects (project here should also include buying of trains)

If Slovenia bought 26 Trains For $209 Million, I am sure our country would buy the same number of trains, with the same spec and configuration for $2.5 billion USD. Just watch! Nigeria, we hail thee.... undecided
