The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday condemned the invasion of the National Assembly and the the seizure of the Senate mace.

DAILY POST reports that thugs suspected to be loyal to the suspended Senator representing Delta Central Senatorial district, Ovie Omo-Agege had invaded the red chambers and forcefully took away the mace.

Reacting to the situation, spokesperson of the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan described the seizure of the mace as a “direct assault on the legislature and bold attempt to truncate Nigeria’s democracy.”

In a statement, Ologbondiyan said, “We note that this offensive has been emboldened by series of interferences and direct attacks by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Buhari Presidency on the institution of the National Assembly, particularly the Senate.

“The APC has foisted on our nation an irredeemable autocracy, which has in three years of governance, gone beyond limits to force Nigerians to accept a government that has no respect for freedom and the ideals of democracy, particularly the constitutional separation of powers.

“Is it not strange that a legislative day appointed to further deliberate on the re-ordering of sequence of election will be the day that strange elements would invade the National Assembly, particularly, the hallowed chambers of the Senate, to disrupt legislative proceeding and seize the mace?


“Equally strange is the compromising of security in the National Assembly paving the way for the invasion.

“The parliament, all over the world, is the bastion of democracy, without which government becomes autocratic and totalitarian.

“We urge Nigerians to pause and reflect on the series of assaults on our legislature under the current dispensation; the persecution and harassment of the leaders and members of the Senate on trumped-up charges, including declaring a serving senator wanted by the Police.

“We therefore charge the National Assembly to bring forth every legislative instrument to protect itself from external aggressions as well as unravelling every persons, offices and institutions that played any form of roles in this wild attempt to scuttle our hard earned democracy.

“Our nation has accepted democracy as the best form of governance. Those whose adrenaline cannot accommodate democracy and its constitutionally guaranteed tenets should either shape in or be forced to conform with the best ideals of democracy.”

For those who may not know, the National Assembly Complex is not a place you just casually stroll in as you want and pick up an item as important as the Mace. It is the 2nd Arm of Government with adequate security 24 hours. To gain access into the Complex, you will pass through one of the most time-consuming, energy-sapping, rigorous screenings available anywhere in Nigeria and a tag assigned to you after you must have provided details of which office you're going to and a confirmation gotten from same office that you're expected (unless you're going to submit a letter).

For a group of thugs to have gained access into the Assembly Complex and even passed through another layer of security by the Chamber's entrance, a high-powered Official must have granted them clearance. Someone far above Senator Omo-Agege and who can give senior police officers directives.

We all know the Senate just yesterday commenced investigations into a $462m unappropriated expenditure by the Buhari govt to purchase helicopters. The CBN Governor and Minister of Defence were alleged to have been summoned to explain why such huge amounts would be taken from the Treasury without proper approvals and paid to an unknown company in the US in the guise of purchasing helicopters.

This act of attacking a Senate that was in session and carting away it's symbol of authority looks every inch like what was planned by the people who don't want to be exposed. Senator Omo-Agege wouldn't be the first Senator to be suspended and he knows invading the National Assembly with thugs won't make his case any better. He must have been contacted to use his grouse with the Senate leadership as a guise to cover the real intent. They want to destroy the National Assembly to cover their evil. They want to plunge us into a full blown dictatorship. Please don't take my words for it but watch how this matter will be handled by the APC government. Watch to see if the Senator and his thugs will be punished.

If you're in Nigeria, prepare for the dramas coming up in the days and weeks ahead as the elections approach. It will be interesting and I pray none of us becomes a victim of the games ahead.

Can we just have a week without useless drama in this country? While other countries are busy innovating and advancing, it is just useless drama day in day out in this country? This is what they will keep fighting on until erection time and be calling youths to come and suck them again. This is a very well planned film by the upper chamber and trust me as usual, nothing will come out of it. It doesn't make sense how a neutral face or 2 faces will come in and take a maze (or whatever is being called ) in the presence of over 100 senetors with their aides outside and they were successful, and even went to thin air without a trace. What a country!. What a useless country!

I have been to national assembly like 3 times the security there is not child's play. for this thugs to walk in freely when a meeting is going on and walk out with the mace that means there must be order from above that the securities should stand down.

I have been inside the 2 chambers of the National Assembly and it's so obvious that Senator Agege bread couldn't have done this alone. They couldn't have escaped through the major gate or drive through the 3 armed zone without the security men escorting them out.

How can there be pandemonium at the National Assembly and the DSS were no where to be found, did they travel with Buhari?
