Women experience a lot of changes in their body during pregnancy. Some women experience weight loss while others are subject to weight gain during this period. Either of these weight conditions depend on a number of factors. One important thing is that pregnant women should seek medical advice before embarking on weight reduction plan. Sometimes it is normal for pregnant women to gain weight but it all depends on body chemistry.

To embark on weight reduction during pregnancy, the BMI (Body Mass Index) should be determined. It is on the knowledge of the index that advice can be given on the appropriateness of any plan to reduce weight. A pregnant women of BMI of 25 to 29.9 should have weight of 15 to 25 pounds. The ideal weight of pregnant women that have BMI of 30 or more should be between 11 to 20 pounds. However, it is inappropriate to embark in weight reducing diet during pregnancy because it can affect the foetus negatively. In fact, some nutrients that are healthy and good for the development of the unborn child may be left out.

It is also common for pregnant women to lose weight as a result of numbers of factors. One prominent cause is loss of appetite. During this period, most pregnant women find it difficult to eat and this account for weight loss. Also, they experience what is called “morning sickness”, and some may even vomit especially during the first trimester. Some pregnancy symptoms may also cause lack of appetite and these may include aversion to some kinds of food, smells and tastes, fatigue may also set in, which makes it difficult for them to eat properly and this may reduce their weight significantly. It is therefore important for pregnant women to eat healthy pregnancy diet regularly.

Another important method for losing weight during pregnancy is exercise. This is effective but it has to be guided by an expert in medical field. Exercise should not be done on your own. Needless to say that some exercises may be harmful to the pregnant woman. Light exercises are recommended but on the whole, it should be one that induce weight loss with zero harm.

Diet during pregnancy should be carefully planned. Such diet must not be the type that increase weight excessively. At the same time, it should not be the one that will deny the unborn baby necessary nutrients needed for its development.You should be guided by the appropriate Body Mass Index (BMI). The health of the mother and the child should be taken cognisance of. In this respect expert advice from nutritionist should be sought. Food that contains folic acid or folate should be part of your meals.

Weight loss during pregnancy should be seriously considered by health personnel to determine whether it is appropriate or not.
