It's obvious there's no longer religious tolerance..... Religious, ethnic and tribal sentiments is the bane of this country.

Please start the campaign for tolerance with your fellow Christians
This is one of the reasons I see Nigerian Christians as intolerant hypocrites

Sometime when I look at the surrounding circumstances and situations, taking a critical and logical analysis of events all around this country, I wonder if this country will actually survive as one.
It's obvious there's no longer religious tolerance and that a very dangerous dimension threatening the cooperate existence of this Nation.
How can a DG come and tell Corps members they are not sent to go and evangelise in their host communities, its very appalling,i guess he will never comment on Corps members who indulge in "runs" in their host communities as his very OK with that.
Of a truth we truly deserve what we get in this country. Religious, ethnic and tribal sentiments is the bane of this country.

I disagree with you on this. Tolerance in this reagard has nothing to do with national assignment, that often has strict rules/code of conduct to ensure inclusiveness and commonality.

After NYSC you can return as a missionary from your church/mosque/Temple/Guru Maharaji or whatever. If you feel the need exists where you previously served. In Civilized countries those on national duty avoid controversial topics or activities like evangelism, political activities, etc. You're free to further study theology of your religion and join the clergy going forward. That freedom is inalienable right everyone has.

We must learn to separate things. Religion or even politics should not colour everything. When we refuse to separate things and lump religion together with everything, then our own tolerance of others' way of life/religion becomes questionable.

Runs is not overt. They most likely meet their patrons secretly. But evangelism is often done publicly, sometimes even with a megaphone.

I know what I just wrote above will not resonate with the average over-religious African mind. At least not now. Maybe in 100 years. As it is now in the West.

The comments above are pretty vain and in denial of the current mess we find ourselves . The DG gave them a wise advice. The advice is timely especially at a time the country is a hotbed of religious crisis. The need to mind ones affairs and embrace solitude cannot be overemphasized.

Their sole purpose in the state is to serve. No one is saying you can't spread the Gospel... Just USE YOUR HEAD and realise there are times and seasons for different things. Be quoting constitution there when price for caskets has gone up.

Wisdom is profitable to direct ooo. (There was a Country)

This is the truth right here!. Don't see anything wrong in what he said.

Hmm. But some noises disturb the public while some don't. Religious noises are the worst of all.

You all are just being unnecessarily sentimental.
With the rate of herdsmen killing and other clashes, that's the best advice he can give them.
Go for rural rugged at your own risk.

When something happens to anyone of them, you start hearing "scrap nysc bla bla bla"

I'm sure even their parents warned them about moving around.

Taraba state is a Christian state. Besides, corpers are not killed nor threatened in Taraba.

They are welcome anywhere, anytime.

They are not. What he should have told them was for them to be careful of where and how they move about. The DSS always has knowledge of places that are flashpoints.

Telling them this is like throwing a blanket on evangelism everywhere. The herdsmen issue is not an entire state issue. People are still moving around in Taraba without getting killed.

The code of conduct or rules or laws guiding NYSC does not have issues with evangelism, if otherwise please bring it up by quoting the exact rules, code or section of the constitution. I think the DG was speaking in his personal capacity and if you ask me, I sense sentiemt and by extension ignorance.
During my service years, there was a time we went for rural rugged evangelisim, we didn't even went straight to evangelise, we gathered the doctors amongst us, raised some funds and got some drugs and medical equipment, the doctors attended to people with medical needs in the community though in our own little capacity.
Also there was a time we went for evangelism in prison, and the lawyers amongst us volunteered to offer legal advice and services freely to some awaiting trial persons. The NYSC officials were commending us and always encouraged us to make such evangelism in other zones. The community leaders appreciated our little service to the communities.
May I bring to your knowledge that when BISHOP David Oyedepo was doing his NYSC, there was no church in the community he served, he built the First Church there with rafter and palmfronds.
When he was leaving, the community gathered and bought a lamp for him and said "this light you brought to our community will shine round the whole world". Today is the light not shinning round the whole world.
The truth is that the DG is ignorant of the fact that service is embedded in evangelism. The early missionaries that brought education to us freely came as evangelist.
I think it's better to have Corps members who are evangelists in communities than those who will engage in all forms of social vices , thus bringing shame and disrepute to NYSC, because the evangelists will impact the communities positively.

You can still do good without any religious tag to it. Your faith might guide you towards it but atheists also donate billions towards the good of mankind.

I know that in 9ja we have problems obeying written rules. Let alone common sense rules. If you want govt to legally spell it out for you first, keep waiting.

While I do not in anyway support violence of any kind, the DG might be sending a "coded" warming to overzealous evangelists in light of Boko who maybe disguised as herdsmen.

What is clear is that the warning has been sounded. If you must do the useless youth service, then it is each person's duty to keep himself safe in the jungle. Govt has no time or care for you.

Nigerians are just emotional hypocrites.

What the DG said is 100%correct!

The NYSC cannot take responsibility for your personal beliefs--you are a like a paramilitary service and there are major responsibilities expected. This is just a tip advice.

And besides, must you evangelize in the campaign manner, known to many churches?

Its SOUL WINNING and NOT CHURCH WINNING!! Soul winning takes a lot of personal friendship, follow up and counseling. That's what the apostles did.

And an environment that has been already hostile towards Christianity like the north (even before terrorist events) needs strategy to penetrate.
