Pharmacy used to be a prestigious course. Has that changed?
They have reduced themselves to mere dispensers even in teaching hospitals.
No clinical input on d patient at all.
Pharmacists are also now in d same union with cleaners, porters, mortuary attendants, drivers, etc.

THE PATIENT COMES TO THE HOSPITAL TO SEE THE DOCTOR.

There are three group of people in the Hospital worldwide;

2. Patients
3. Hospital support staff.

-A patient comes to a medical emergency unit rushed by his relatives.
-The DOCTOR sends for his file/folder to be retrieved by the MEDICAL RECORDS STAFF.
-The DOCTOR takes history from PATIENT and examines the PATIENT.
-The DOCTOR makes a diagnosis (or set of diagnosis-differential diagnosis).
-The DOCTOR asks the PHARMACIST to supply the drugs for the particular disease.
-The DOCTOR asks the NURSE to administer the drugs.
-The DOCTOR asks the PATIENT to go to Radiology department to do an X-RAY/CT-SCAN.
-The DOCTOR in the Radiology department (RADIOLOGIST) asks the RADIOGRAPHER to do the X-ray. The DOCTOR in the Radiology department (RADIOLOGIST) interprets the X-ray and writes a report to be taken to the DOCTOR in the Emergency.
-The DOCTOR in the Emergency unit uses the X-ray report to further treat the patient.
-The DOCTOR sends the PATIENT to the laboratory to do some tests.
-The DOCTOR in the laboratory (PATHOLOGIST) asks the LABORATORY SCIENTIST or LABORATORY TECHNICIAN to do the test or do the test himself if necessary.
The DOCTOR in the laboratory (PATHOLOGIST) interprets the report and sends the patient back to the doctor in the emergency.
-The DOCTOR evaluates the patient and asks for more drugs from the PHARMACY for the NURSE to administer.
-The DOCTOR admits the patient to the ward if patient is not good to go or discharges the patient if he is good.
-THE DOCTOR in the ward keeps on seeing the patient and evaluating his needs. THE DOCTOR calls for the assistance of the NURSE, PHARMACIST, LABORATORY SCIENTIST/TECHNICIAN, RADIOGRAPHER when the need arises.
But there is always a need for the DOCTOR to be in CONTACT with the progress of the patient.
-THE DOCTOR DISCHARGES the PATIENT home or CERTIFIES him dead as the case may be.

IT BEGINS WITH THE DOCTOR and PATIENT from admission and ends with DOCTOR and PATIENT on discharge from the hospital.

3.) CAREER PROGRESSION for DOCTORS.
Doctors have two pathways for progression in Nigeria:
i. NORMAL CIVIL SERVICE where you are promoted to the next grade after every 3years.
ii. POSTGRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION, where you enroll into residency and is only promoted after rigorous academic and practical training and passing of professional examinations.
After NYSC the doctor pays heavily to write an exam called primaries. After the primaries he/she undergo extensive training as a REGISTRAR and after 3-5years write the PART 1 exams to become a SENIOR REGISTRAR. After another 3-5years he writes another exam to become a FELLOW/CONSULTANT. Each of PART 1 and 2 exams advance the doctor only one grade level (e.g Part 1 exam after 3-5 years moves a DOCTOR from grade 12 to 13. Part 2 after another 3-5moves a doctor from grade 13-14).
The pass rate of these exams generally is between 10-30%.
Its difficult to progress through the postgraduate pathway. You may spend more than 6years without promotion.

Did you read the texts properly? How's NMA greedy! All the noise NMA is primarily because of Nigerians and of course their gains too.

How do explain a nurse who cannot even make a clean incision on an adult becoming consultant in Peadiatric Surgery unit and earning higher salary than regs and senior regs who do majority of surgeries in the unit.

You are not informed .Medicine and Nursing are different professions . A nurse is a consultant in surgical nursing not a consultant in surgery. Its the duty of the Dr to do the surgery and its the duty of the nurse to prepare that patient for surgery and nurse that patient to health after the surgery !! So I don't see why Drs should be fighting over noting. I don't blame them they are judge in their own case

No relativity when they enter the same level. Cunning set of people. Why will a pharmacist enter at a higher level than a nurse?

Moreover before government sign any agreement with JOHESU, government should include licenses and examinations every two years for all JOHESU members. No exam no license, no license no job and no salary review.

If you aren't a health worker, then don't delve into what you don't know.
If you are a lawyer in a law firm with many secretaries and paralegals, if they start paying the latter group d same or almost d same salary with d lawyers, do you think there will be harmony in that law firm?
Will d secretaries obey and work harmoniously under some1 they earn d same wages with?
Is it fair to pay ppl whose qualification are far apart d same or nearly same wages?
Many doctors work for 30+ years and retire, they do not attain d title of consultant b/c they don't have d time and strength for the stress of postgraduate training, but d Nigerian nurse wants to sit behind her nursing station and answer consultant wt no further studies or training as if it is a chieftaincy title?
The pharmacist in all the hospitals have reduced themselves to mere dispensers, not a single clinical input to improve the health of the patient but they want to answer consultant and earn d same with doctors.
If you award a nurse d title of consultant, what clinical input will they make on d patient, bearing in mind that medical even consultants refer patients to other consulates for expert management?
It is b/c of ppl like you that they have d liver to make all these spurious demands.
I will be deluding you if I say I understand the thrust of the specious argument you were trying to canvass above...

The last time I checked, other health workers have never asked for pay parity with doctors.
For intents and purposes, it defies rationale and rectitude, that Nigerian doctors would see attempts by other health workers to secure improvements in their working conditions as a threat to their (doctors) primacy in the healthcare sector.

Can't doctors negotiate terms with government without hinging their demands on what other professionals are demanding?

The disingenuous reference to clinical input is simply laughable. What input are you expecting when doctors, capitalizing on the docility of these other professionals, have usurped all key roles in the health service delivery?

I personally think pharmacists are not smart or else how would one explain their decision to accept the thorough subjugation which has been their lot in the healthcare organogram...

At least its clear where the problem in the health sector is coming from now. The doctors don't want other staff to enjoy a little increament of salary even after government has increased their slararies more than Three times in in four years. This is just a case of wickedness and man's inhumanity to man. The doctors are not the employer of labour but they are telling government what to do. It's a case of eating alone and wanting other people to die of hunger even though there is excess food to serve everybody. Let the world see how wicked the doctors are in Nigeria.

Let me tell you the truth early this year the government of Canada increased doctors salary but the doctors refused the increament and told the government to use the money to pay other health workers and improve the facilities in the hospitals for patients to enjoy. But in Nigeria the case is opposite.
please read number eight of the published article than spewing rubbish online.... No matter the number of Johesu, they will only achieve their demands when it tallies with international practices

All this nonsense typing, is it about the foolish Nigerian doctors that know nothing. Why do you think President Buhari had to travel for medical check up outside. It's crystal clear that Nigerian doctors are not worth it at all. I have first hand experience of how doctors in teaching hospitals managed my mom's health almost to death. Just one visit to a Turkish hospital, all their wrong diagnosis were revealed. And today my mom is alive and strong. I rather die than submit myself to be treated by a Nigerian doctor

Most Nigerian doctors know nothing especially those in GOPD. No wonder the elites travel abroad for medical checkup. Upon these doctors don't know anything, they are still arrogant on their ignorance. If you don't want to be killed or maimed by the wrong prescription of some of these arrogant doctors, better ask your Pharmacist.

If they want to be doctors they should have passed Jamb. 90% of Lab scientist filled in Medicine at one time or the other for God sake, so also 98% of male BSC Nurses, the non graduate nurses went to nursing school because they were too dumb to pass Jamb, today they want to be on the same salary scale as Doctor. I see that these guys don't know what consultant means.
The don't know that the title 'consultant' is used even outside medical field.
The only consultant they know is all those consultant gynaecologist, consultant pediatrician etc and they think that any other health professional who becomes a consultant will take over their own role.
They don't know that everyone has his own specialty and that they can become consultant in their own field.

Which kain doctors be this wey no understand this simple thing sef?

the fault with this is that a laboratory scientist cannot make a diagnosis (trust me there are serious conditions that require the expertise of a doctor to diagnose ) a lab scientist is not trained enough to make diagnosis ...same for a radiographer etc.. for example optometrist own stores everywhere where they claim to treat eye conditions, but unfortunately, they can only cut you glass for refractive errors . They direct the patient tto go meet the ophthalmologist . There is no need duplicating profession. As it is everwhere in the world, if you want to make diagnosis, lead a department o hospital, go to the university, study medicine and surgery as same goes everywhere in the world, nigeria will not be different.

The veneer of contempt is misplaced...

In the final analysis, doctors should desist their luck too far because if they continue with the prevailing avarice, then something is wont give soon.

They are relying on their political connection to further inequity and insensitivity.

But some day, a government will call their bluff and then the little respect still remaining them will go with wind.

The fact that other health professionals give deference to doctors ought not be abused by doctors to the point of seeing themselves as gods while their co-workers are sub-humans.

I can see now that most doctors are just concerned about the money only rather than give quality medical care to people.

You guys are just filled with wickedness and hate for other health workers. You have to go back to school to learn how to read and understand before you come here to say trash.

Point of correction to all the doctors JOHESU is not seeking for pay parity with doctors they are only seeking for pay rise. It is the minister of doctor (professor Isaac adewale) that induce that word into the picture. He is also a doctor and as such he is doing their dirty bidding for them.

The doctors claim that they are the only important people in the hospital so now JOHESU have gone on strike they should do all the work by themselves alone. Go and look at all the hospitals they have become ghost towns.

Stupid selfish people who call themselves doctors my foot.

I wish u could digest the NMA position before posting this crap..
NMA is not against pay rise for anybody but ask that relativity be sacrosanct according to international best practice.. A doctor with several academic battering and fellowship struggle cannot be on same salary scale with a nurse or pharmacist.. forget the age and all, the quality of service isn't same irrespective of how old one has been in service. We must learn to respect professionalism in this country.
Johesu was formed to hang up against the doctors in the health sector because they feel with their strength they can arm twist the government.. Some of it's demands ate briddled with ego, jealousy and desire to reap where one didn't sow. The door is wide open for any who wishes to study medicine. No following short cut, go back to school and be accorded same status.

Even overheard one telling a pt dat she cannot b admitted 'cos shes nt abt to delve into nursing services. Unavailability of JOHESU affects NMA n vice versa..No one is a god in d hosp... D sooner we realize dis, d better for our health care system

copy and paste.... Biggest fool ever liveth.....

A doctor that cannot set a common IV line and will be asking the nurses what to do, is that one a doctor? Patients suffer in the hands of some of these doctors. Thank God for other medical personnels in the hospital.
