Dogs Everywhere! - How Did This Happen? by Nobody: 12:11pm On May 14, 2018
Have we ever wondered how Dogs became a huge part of Our Lives, and today living comfortably in our homes, even to the point of understanding our emotions?

Well, am going to be traveling with you down the road to approximately 15,000yrs ago when it all began.

And not to worry, we shall be back to 21st Century.

I believe to understand a thing, one must trace, know and understand the root cause/origin.

Today let's look at the History Of Dog Domestication.

HISTORY OF DOGS - Part 1
Around 15,000 years ago in the Middle East the first Domesticated Wolves is believed to have appeared. However some new research evidence says it occurred earlier.

But how did this happened?
I will tell you.

• This whole thing began in the Days of our forefathers (the Nomadic Humans), far back when humans were living in caves, moving from one area to another, and in the Wild surrounded by other wild animals. Human depended on hunting other animals as source of food. So, each time our ancestors would go out in search of food, hunt animals and the kill back to their camps.

• As humans couldn't consume everything at once and our ancestors had no proper means of preserving their kill/meat, so leftovers were everywhere.

• These leftovers, and the smell of fresh meat gradually began attracting the wolves to our human camps and shelters. And overtime the wolves quickly figured out in their heads..

"Hmm... We could be getting easy meals from these human camps., No More Hunting!!" Lol..

So, they continued hanging around the camps of our ancestors.

To Be Continued... Stay Tuned.

HISTORY OF DOGS - Part 2
(Continuation....)
• Wolves are territorial animals. That is, they live within a given space fenced with nothing but wolf pee grin , and will not tolerate any intruder into their space/territory, epecially if the Wolf pack is headed by a strong Alpha.

* Back to the Story....*
So, as the Wolves continued to hang around the territories of our ancestors, some wolves eventually made the area surrounding the human camp as their habitat, depending on our leftovers for food.

Our ancestors however must have been scared at first, but they quickly learnt that the wolves were only hanging around for leftover food and not really to harm them.
Unknown to them, this was going to be the beginning of a life long Friendship..

So as the Wolves continued to hang around, some wolves started mating and soon puppies were everywhere.

Now, in other to scare predators away and protect their pups from other wild animals, the wolves were indirectly alerting and protecting our ancestors in their Various camps which the wolves now saw as their own homes.

When our ancestors realized this mutual benefit of a relationship based on "Food for Protection" this led to the Dog and Man Relationship. And soon after, our ancestors started buying the hearts of these wolves and some wolves got the joke.

To Be Continued......

Grey Wolves are the original ancestors of Dogs.
They are closely related in almost every thing.

Wolves are the highest level of the Specie Dog.
That is the simple reason behind it.

HISTORY OF DOGS - Part 3
(Continuation...)
As time went on, the wolves that got the joke (that is, the wolves that were tamed) stayed with our ancestors. And the ones that failed to get along and still retain their wild nature stayed back (probably, were eliminated).

And the tamer wolves, well, they continued to trail alongside our ancestors. And together, they continued their journey of life, migrating from one place to another in search of food and fertile land.

As our ancestors continued their journey of life, moving from one place to another, they also encountered each other (from different regions, race, and nomadic groups). And so, tamed wolves from different regions (Middle East, south, etc. ) Continued to breed.

And Boom!!
Different temperaments began to surface. Thus we stayed having different breeds.

As Civilization continued, some people started breeding dogs selectively for certain desired temperament and conformation. And as we later discovered, we started breeding dogs to help us carry out certain tasks and assistance.

So, there you have it!!

The beginning of Dogmanship...A relationship that has come to stay forever.

Why was it wolves that moved close to humans just to benefit from the free meals? Were other animals too dumb to recognize free meals?

Very good observation, I must say, but if you go back and take your time to read my article you would understand and picture what really happened about 15,000yrs ago.

Sure, other animals were around, but the study shows that the wolves were the first to spot this benefit.
Lions and other wild animals were probably busy hunting for alive kills (if you study lions, you will also know that they are not scavengers and prefer to hunt their own meal).

Wolves also stay around caves and similar hideouts, so they can protect and keep their offsprings safe.
Also, the early humans were cave men.

Other wild animals must have been to our human camps, but I believe they were more interested in killing and eating the humans than in eating the leftovers. So, there must have been a fight/struggle between our ancestors and the other predators.

However, the wolves were the only animals afraid enough to not invade the human camps, because humans too were predators and hunted down other animals. So the wolves were more interested in the leftovers.

Wolves are territorial animals and they quickly claimed the territory and the humans after a while saw that the wolves meant no harm, but were only interested in the free leftover food they were getting.

This resulted to a mutual relationship when the wolves started chasing other predators away from the human camps that they now considered their home/territory and that was when our ancestors began to see their usefulness and trusted them to stay around the camps.

Lions don't care about where their meal comes from. Else why do they usually drive off other predators from their kills. They also scavenge dead animals. In fact, young male animals are usually mainly scavengers before getting to be accomplished hunters. They will eat anything to survive

Well Said.
But that's when the going gets tough.
